As the man approached, he had an unlit cigarette dangling from his lips. The surrounding officers noticed but did not intervene; they remained vigilant, keeping a watchful eye while also controlling the crowd nearby. In truth, there weren't many people left due to previous events.
When Lin Yuan saw him, he stepped out from the side. Knowing that so many officers had arrived at the police station, why wasn’t he hiding? There was still a chance to reconsider.
The man raised his hand to check his watch; it was just a few minutes shy of the afternoon hour. He didn’t mind having a chat with Lin Yuan at this moment. There was no thought of backing out.
Exhaling a puff of smoke, the man pulled something out from his coat. Even if it was all an act, he had to commit fully. "I can give you this," he said, "Your methods are actually quite effective. If you’re willing to join us, we can provide as much money as you need."
He slightly tilted his head toward Zheng Rufeng nearby. "Captain Zheng, our boss asked me to greet you; this message is equally valid for you."
Zheng Rufeng frowned, surprised that the man even recognized him. "Don’t be too quick to refuse," he added, "not everyone is like Lin Yuan, who can just harden his heart and not worry about anything."
"You must have a bomb on you, right?" Lin Yuan interrupted.
"Yes," the man replied, looking up at the sky. Although the police had kept this matter under wraps, not everyone could be kept in the dark; several drones had already appeared overhead.
Reporters began to gather around as the commotion attracted more onlookers.
"I told you not to let the reporters come! What’s going on?" Zheng Rufeng’s expression darkened as he noticed the situation; they didn’t want to create too much of a disturbance.
One of the nearby officers quickly explained, "They’re not our people. We don’t know where these reporters got their information; they just haven’t approached us yet."
"They must know there’s a bomb here," Zheng Rufeng realized that nothing could be done now; if those reporters wanted to report, they would do so regardless.
He glanced at Lin Yuan not far away; the bomb disposal tools were already prepared beside him. "You should know you only have one chance."
Lin Yuan had already seen the man’s slightly raised hand and the gun hidden beneath his trench coat. The man nodded in acknowledgment.
At that moment, the crowd around them began to retreat as they caught sight of the gun in the man's hand through their live-streaming phones.
"Wow, he's got a gun!"
"What’s going on? Didn’t they say this area was a construction site?"
"Hey man, aren’t you checking your phone? Those people must be undercover!"
In the crowded chaos, the risk of a stampede increased, but the nearby officers were quick to act, separating the crowd.
Suddenly, two gunshots rang out.
"Who got shot? Did anyone see?"
"Could it be a mutual hit?"
They were right; Lin Yuan's face turned pale as he realized the other party was aiming for his life. Unexpectedly, a bullet struck his thigh. As for the shooter, he had aimed at Lin Yuan's hand holding the gun.
The sudden turn of events didn’t catch the surrounding officers off guard. They swiftly subdued the man in the trench coat.
Someone tore open his clothing, revealing a timed bomb underneath.
At that moment, the onlookers understood they shouldn’t have come here.
"There’s a bomb inside! Everyone, retreat!"
"Run back! Hurry!"
The crowd, which moments ago seemed deaf to everything around them, suddenly erupted like boiling water and began to retreat rapidly.
The officers watching this scene felt somewhat unfazed; they continued to uphold their duty, keeping people at bay. The only ones still pressing forward were a few reporters.
Zheng Rufeng and his team rushed forward. They had come prepared this time and could provide first aid for Lin Yuan’s injury.
The timed bomb was about to explode. Even if they managed to get people away now, they would still be affected by the blast.
"Damn it, are these reporters out of their minds?"
Seeing more reporters approaching and helicopters descending from above, the officers felt their frustration peak. Did they think this was just a game?
Even if he took off his jacket, it wouldn’t help disarm the bomb underneath.
"This bomb was personally made by my boss; you can’t defuse it."
"Let’s die together."
He looked calmly at Lin Yuan and Zheng Rufeng. If he wasn’t carrying a timed bomb, his previous words might have held some sincerity; now it felt like a trap set for them. Agreeing would only lead to death.
Lin Yuan gritted his teeth and tried to move forward; he had studied bombs in criminal psychology and might be able to help—
As he struggled forward, two officers held him back.
"Leave it to our captain."
Lin Yuan was taken aback; he had been confident because they came from the same system as the shooter.
But what about Zheng Rufeng?
At this moment, Zheng Rufeng displayed an unprecedented calmness, even more so than during any previous capture operation. It was a side of him that Lin Yuan had never seen before.
The voices of the officers around him echoed in his ears.
You have to know that our captain is famously skilled at bomb disposal; he has never lost in this area.
Huh?
The man in the trench coat, bound and helpless, looked at Zheng Rufeng, who was intently analyzing the bomb, and a sense of despair began to fill his eyes.
Anything that the boss said would come to fruition; there would be no unexpected outcomes this time either. The thought that everyone would be buried with him made a smile involuntarily creep onto his face.
He had thought he would live his life in solitude.
In the final moments.
Tick-tock.
Tick-tock.
Tick.
The man in the trench coat, waiting for death to arrive with his eyes closed, heard the sound beside him stop and slowly opened his eyes. What met his gaze was a black square object.
Had it been disarmed?
Was it done so quickly?
Lin Yuan also found it hard to believe. He remembered seeing on television that it took a long time to defuse a bomb. After a thrilling struggle, only then could it be safely dismantled.
After all, this was in the final seconds—within a second or so, right?
And just like that, it was gone.
Everyone present, except for him and the man in the trench coat, breathed a sigh of relief; they were not as tense as he was.
Zheng Rufeng weighed the bomb in his hands and then calmly scrutinized the man.
I expected it to be some new product—at least more advanced than what I’ve seen before—but it turned out to be just this.
No, it can’t be!
The man's pupils gradually dilated, seemingly unable to believe this reality.
