The Green Snake has failed; let me take over.
The man, gripping a dagger and displaying a menacing demeanor, was the same one who had shot at Lin Yuan with a sniper rifle before. I had thought that in such a short time, his rate of growth shouldn't be so rapid. Was that system really so fond of him?
Slowly caressing the silver handgun in his hand, Mr. Fang stood up from the sofa. If we were to talk about the ruthless individuals under his command, he certainly had a few. Perhaps it was time for another experiment.
Beneath this building, aside from the parking lot, there was also a basement, and he held the only key. Taking a specialized elevator, a few minutes later, the man followed him into a dark chamber. The dim light inside made it hard to see clearly.
As they entered, small lights around them activated in response, and the smell of instant noodles wafted out from within.
Creak.
A door was slowly pushed open.
A portly man with a round face appeared before them, looking obsequiously at Mr. Fang, fully aware of who his true boss was. What did Mr. Fang want this time? The last accident he orchestrated had no flaws; surely there was another task for him now. After all, this was all about money.
Mr. Fang remained silent and raised his handgun.
In the astonished gaze of the man behind him, the previously grinning man suddenly widened his eyes and collapsed to the ground. The blood pooling from the back of his head and his breath ceasing within moments confirmed that this man was dead.
"Mr. Fang, what is going on?"
"Testing."
He answered simply with those two words and stood still for several minutes. The man found it hard to comprehend this action but chose to respect what the person before him had decided.
They stood in silence for several minutes until Mr. Fang finally realized he had taken a wrong turn. Even if he changed course now, it would be futile.
Hahaha!
A sudden burst of laughter echoed through the underground space, its size amplifying the sound in an eerie manner that sent chills down the man's spine. The usual Mr. Fang would never behave so recklessly.
However, this laughter did not last long before he heard a chilling voice beside him.
"Isn't it just a game? Let's see who plays themselves to death."
He was different from those self-righteous individuals; as long as this dangerous trend persisted, he could never feel at ease.
Inside the police station, Lin Yuan sneezed for some unknown reason. Why did it feel like someone was cursing him from behind? That couldn't be true; his social skills were quite good.
He looked up at Zheng Yunyin, who had suddenly appeared. "What brings you here?"
"I'm here to deliver a meal for my dad."
"Oh, so how did you end up here?"
"Captain Zhang asked me to come by and check on you, to see if you're still alive."
That comment was a bit insulting, and Lin Yuan's expression darkened slightly. Zheng Yunyin quickly stopped joking.
Her demeanor gradually became serious. "I'm not kidding. I actually came here for something important, but it's a personal matter."
Lin Yuan raised an eyebrow, signaling her to continue.
"There are quite a few criminal investigation cases in this district, including drug-related ones. Given our coastal location, the customs' drug enforcement efforts are crucial. Recently, when I was home, my dad mentioned that he might be involved in a secret search operation."
"From a ship returning from overseas? It might be hiding some contraband?"
In simple terms, Zheng Yunyin's father was set to participate in a drug search operation.
"Shouldn't they cooperate actively? There shouldn't be any danger, right?" Lin Yuan asked.
Zheng Yunyin shook her head. "The ship is named as such, but it's primarily for entertainment purposes; it's not a cargo ship."
"Even if it’s not a cargo ship, doesn’t that mean it still needs to be inspected?"
Zheng Yunyin explained further. "This time, the ship is carrying shareholders from a well-known foreign company. They have close maritime trade relations with us and other provinces as well. They won’t conduct direct inspections because if nothing is found on the surface, it would be difficult to report back to higher-ups. Once there’s a rift in business dealings, it becomes hard to collaborate again."
"I see. So why did you come to find me?"
"I thought since you've been under scrutiny lately, if you were quietly sent to participate in this ship inspection by the police, it would be harder for them to track you down. You could also have some time to relax."
"Should I thank you for that?" Lin Yuan understood her intention.
There should have been an advisor accompanying the operation, but it seemed that Mr. Bai Ling was currently unavailable, and the other two had their own matters to attend to.
Zheng Yunyin blinked at him. "So that just leaves you."
"If it's your recommendation, I can ask my dad to help you secure an award this month. How does that sound?"
"An award?" Lin Yuan was curious, but he assured himself that his agreement wasn't merely due to curiosity.
When the application was submitted to the district director, the director came over to inquire about Bai Ling's opinion. After all, these consultants were under their jurisdiction.
Lin Yuan? How did he know about this? He hadn't mentioned it to him.
The director helplessly recounted the situation.
"This little girl... You should see if he has the capability to carry out this mission. If not, we might as well replace him with someone else; after all, the Criminal Investigation Team isn't just idling around."
So bringing in a consultant was also to prevent any oversights.
Bai Ling thought for a moment and nodded. "Let him do it; it will be good for him to lay low for a while."
She had just glanced at the time; the search wouldn't start until the ship docked. The police would arrange personnel beforehand.
If they really investigated, they would directly board the ship to apprehend; if not, they would just go through the motions.
With Bai Ling's input, the district director probably left some leeway.
"People in your line of work are always easy targets. These reckless individuals are becoming more and more numerous. I will coordinate with various provinces for a thorough investigation into the blood-related incidents. Don't worry."
Compared to the three consultants in his police station, that kid named Lin Yuan stood out too much.
The only dissatisfaction came from the Criminal Investigation Team waiting for their application to be approved—Team Leader Zheng Rufeng.
He knew his daughter had always been strict with her words, which was why she had brought this up, and Zheng Yun would also be informed about it.
Who would have thought that as they were about to leave, they would still send him a consultant?
"Team Leader, I heard your daughter seems quite fond of Lin Yuan. Wasn't she responsible for him when he first joined?"
"These young people—there's no way there isn't some kind of spark between them!"
Upon hearing this, Zheng Rufeng immediately decided he needed to assert his authority; he wouldn't let anyone ride on his head without consequence!
