"Isn't your relationship with her pretty good? Why did you argue that day?" Lin Yuan asked casually.
"It's because I forgot to bring her soy milk that morning. I usually take care of that, but I really forgot that day." The girl spoke calmly, even though she was sitting across from a police officer. It was hard to imagine she was discussing her best friend's suicide.
"When did you realize you had a mental illness?" The question finally brought some expression to Zhou Ruo's face.
"Ten years old," she replied with certainty.
"How do you remember it so clearly?"
"Because that was the third day I met Zhong Tiantian, and the next day was her birthday. It was also the first time I missed her birthday." Lin Yuan noted down her words about discovering her mental illness on her birthday.
"Did you see a doctor?"
"I did, but the doctor just told me to take medication."
"Zhou Ruo."
"Okay, last question. When and where did you last meet Zhong Tiantian?"
"We haven't seen each other since our last argument. I think she just didn't want to see me." Zhou Ruo's eyes showed a hint of clarity this time.
After asking these questions, Lin Yuan took her out. After all, she wasn't a suspect, and he couldn't keep her there indefinitely. Zhou Ruo's father looked at her and asked Lin Yuan if they were done, but the answer was that they would need to follow up later.
Once outside the police station, they got into a taxi. They didn't have enough money to buy a car, so they took a cab. As soon as they got in, Zhou Ruo's mother pinched her ear in anger.
"I told you not to meddle in other people's affairs! Now look what happened; you had to drag us into this mess. Do you know how much time off your dad and I had to take?"
Zhou Ruo remained silent, and it was her father who spoke up. "It doesn't concern her; maybe they were just living well until they had a daughter like this."
"I’ve never heard of someone committing suicide at a police station. I heard many media outlets are preparing to cover this incident. You all saw it too, right? That young officer, Lin Yuan—his name has been quite popular lately."
"True, but it's not as hot as the current celebrities. Still, there’s been some buzz locally."
"By the way, do we still have any of that mental health medication at home? I don't remember having any."
They didn't expect that the girl used to have mental health issues; she would need to clarify that herself later. It was Sweet Sweet who bought it for me, a month ago.
Zhou Ruo thought to herself, well, if there’s a lot of medicine, you won’t say a word, right? Our family could cover a week's worth of groceries with that. She figured it didn’t matter since so much time had passed; not taking it wouldn’t be a problem. Who would have thought that when Sweet Sweet said to take it, she would actually spend money on it? Forget it, once this medicine is finished, I won’t buy any more.
Hearing that voice, Zhou Ruo's father felt a headache coming on and didn’t notice Zhou Ruo, who was lowering her head and fiddling with the thread on her clothes, slowly twisting it around her fingers. The thin thread wrapped tightly around her fingers, constricting until her skin began to flush.
As soon as Lin Yuan stepped out, he was blocked by Bai Qiushui. Seeing him with dark circles under his eyes from staying up all night made her curious. “Did you stay up all night?”
Bai Qiushui gritted her teeth. “What do you think?”
If it weren't for those technical staff constantly bothering him with questions, he wouldn't have had to stay up so late last night and would have gotten up earlier.
“Alright, come with me to the office first. You can ask me any questions there.”
Watching Lin Yuan walk ahead, Bai Qiushui felt as if she were being manipulated but still followed him. He had been to the technical department before, but he had never seen the consulting room in Haishi. When he saw a bed inside, he was taken aback.
“What’s this bed for?”
“For sleeping; it’s enough.”
Knowing what Lin Yuan was going to say, he replied helplessly, “I haven’t rented a place nearby yet; I’ll move in once I find one.”
The next day after his onboarding procedures were completed, Zheng Yun helped him out and even arranged for some subsidies so he could choose a better neighborhood.
Bai Qiushui nodded. When he was young, he had also traveled around with his parents and had attended several schools.
“I saw that other person almost breach my firewall. Where did they come from?”
Bai Qiushui wasn't overly confident in her abilities; although she had some self-assurance, reaching this point wasn’t just about confidence. The other party was quite clever; knowing she would check their address, they unplugged the network cable immediately. However, that URL probably wouldn’t log in anymore.
That meant they would need to find another account. He frowned. This wasn’t difficult for them; if he could do it, the other party could too.
“Are you also interested in criminal investigation?”
Lin Yuan sat down on the chair and poured a cup of water for him.
"It's not that," Bai Qiushui said modestly. "I've been to the police station in Jing City several times, so I know a few things."
"I got some information from Officer Zheng about the girl who committed suicide at your place. It's difficult to identify the suspect. Based on your earlier speculation, if the person behind this is who you mentioned, then it’s likely a random killing."
"But there has to be a target; even a mouse has a tail."
As Lin Yuan sipped his tea, he didn’t notice that Bai Qiushui's gaze was drawn to the bright yellow clothing peeking out from his backpack. The outfit looked increasingly familiar.
"As a young person in this new era, ordering takeout is definitely something I do," he continued. "Although I pay in cash, that doesn’t mean I don’t order online."
"Is this your outfit?" Bai Qiushui asked.
"Cough, cough. This is my work uniform when I'm not busy."
"When I first got your information from the police station, I thought it was fake—just a gimmick," Lin Yuan said, not in a hurry to put his things away. "Let’s get back to business. I helped you out with a big favor in Jing City; helping me with a small favor should be no problem, right?"
"What kind of favor?"
Bai Qiushui had completely lost the desire to compete with him after their earlier conversation.
"A few days ago, someone tried to kill me. Some nearby surveillance footage can still be restored. Can you help me see if we can identify the face?"
"What if it's not someone from our country?"
"Then you'll need to think of a way around that."
Lin Yuan wasn't very familiar with foreign networks and didn’t even have any URLs; he would have to look things up online at the last minute.
But Bai Qiushui was different; even at such a young age, he could modify the firewall in Jing City and alter code, indicating that his knowledge was on a different level compared to his peers.
Lin Yuan didn’t want to burden the child with too much work.
"Alright, but I can only do my best."
"That's all I need."
