The girl’s cheek was swollen from the slap, yet she refused to bow her head. "I did nothing wrong!"
"Do you dare to argue with me? Just wait until I beat you to death!"
The girl covered her face, dodging left and right as the woman's slaps came swiftly and fiercely, aimed directly at her face. Unable to endure it any longer, she grabbed the woman's arm and bit down hard.
The woman cried out in pain and released her grip. The girl took the chance to run, hearing the distant shouts of the woman and a boy behind her.
"Dare to bite me? Just wait until I deal with you!"
"Mom, that little brat dared to bite you today; tomorrow she'll be riding on your head!"
As she listened to the commotion behind her, the girl's heart raced. She had only one thought: to run, to a place where no one knew her and no one could control her.
She had had enough of this life; she no longer wanted to be scolded or beaten. She wanted to leave!
Just as she reached the corner of a narrow alley, she collided with someone. The person was tall and thin, dressed in fine fabric, with jade rings on his fingers that only cultivators wore.
She froze for a moment, panic washing over her. Forgetting the marks on her face, she bowed repeatedly in apology. "Sir, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"
"It's fine."
He reassured her as he helped her up, but as he did so, he clearly saw the raised finger marks on her face and noticed several scratches on her delicate neck, as if made by nails.
His brow furrowed slightly; before he could say anything, a woman's shrill voice echoed nearby.
"You little brat! You better run far away! Otherwise, when I catch you, I'll hang you up and whip you with a rattan stick!"
The girl trembled at the sound and tried desperately to pull away from the man’s grasp but found herself held firmly in place. Tears filled her eyes as she felt both wronged and scared.
"Sir, please let me go! When my mother comes, she'll definitely beat me to death!"
Upon hearing this, the man understood immediately. At that moment, the woman arrived and glanced at the distinguished young man beside her before looking at her daughter who was trembling like a frightened chick in his grip.
A sinking feeling hit her heart as she shot a glare at the girl. The man noticed this small gesture and frowned slightly.
"Are you her mother?"
The woman paused for a moment before quickly switching to a fawning smile for him. "Sir, this little brat is always causing trouble. If she has offended you, that's her own business; it has nothing to do with us. You can do whatever you want with her."
Hearing this, despair washed over the girl's face. Was she really going to die here?
She bit her lower lip, tears streaming down her face. Even at this critical moment, she refused to let out a single sound of crying, merely biting her lip until it was stained a deep red.
Seeing this, Qi Xiao's brows furrowed even deeper. He took out a mid-grade spirit stone and tossed it into the woman's arms.
"I've bought this girl."
The woman looked at the mid-grade spirit stone in her palm, her smile widening uncontrollably. This was a mid-grade spirit stone! It would take her quite some time to earn enough to gather one. She never expected this girl to be so valuable!
She licked her lips, hesitating slightly. "Mister Immortal, you won't regret buying this girl, will you?"
Even if he did regret it, there was no turning back now; once the spirit stone was in her pocket, it would never come out again.
"I won't regret it. Since you've accepted the spirit stone, this girl has nothing to do with you anymore."
Hearing his assurance, the woman squinted with a smile. "I understand, I understand. Mister Immortal, don't worry. From today on, I will act as if I have no daughter. I will pretend not to see her on the road."
Qi Xiao looked down at the girl. She blinked her big eyes, still somewhat bewildered. She couldn't comprehend how things had developed to this point. She had thought she had offended the immortal and that death was inevitable, yet not only did he spare her life, but he also bought her.
What did the immortal want?
Qi Xiao gently asked, "Do you have anything else you need to pack?"
The girl bit her lip and timidly replied, "Mister Immortal, I have a dog that grew up with me. Can I bring it along?"
"It's very old and doesn't move much; it doesn't eat much either. It might die any day now and won't take up much of your resources. Can I…?"
Her voice grew softer until she felt she was being unreasonable for even asking the immortal to take in Da Huang as well.
Da Huang was old and dirty and required food; surely the immortal would find it bothersome. Yet Da Huang had been her companion since childhood.
As she spoke, she trembled and tears fell from her chin.
The woman glared at her in frustration. With such a golden opportunity before her, how could she not seize it?
It was a blessing for the immortal to take her in; how could she even think of bringing along a dog? Wasn't she afraid that the immortal would find it troublesome and abandon her too?
This simply wouldn't do! Such a rare opportunity should not be squandered!
Grinding her teeth, the woman stepped forward and poked the girl's forehead while scolding her.
"Are you really going to bring that old, dying dog? Who knows how many diseases it has. Aren't you afraid of passing something to the Immortal?"
As the woman continued to scold, ready to unleash more words, Qi Xiao raised his hand to stop her. The woman smiled sheepishly and retreated to her spot.
Qi Xiao gently patted the girl's head. "It's alright. If you want to bring it, then let's take it along. A mere dog is nothing I can't afford."
The girl's eyes lit up, tears welling up as she became overwhelmed with emotion. Without hesitation, she bowed deeply to Qi Xiao. "Thank you, Immortal Sir! I have nothing to repay you with, but if you ever need anything from me in the future, I will do my utmost!"
Qi Xiao paused for a moment. He indeed had some tasks he needed her help with, and they were quite challenging.
"Are you serious about that?" he asked.
The girl bit her lip and nodded earnestly. "More than spirit stones."
Qi Xiao smiled and ruffled her hair, giving her a gentle push. "Alright then."
When the boy saw the woman and girl returning one after the other, his eyes widened in shock. "What happened? This girl didn’t get chased around by her mother today?"
In the past, she would at least come back with her ear pulled. Today, not only did their mother not hit her, but she was also smiling brightly.
The boy pouted, his eyes reddening as he pretended to cry dramatically. "Mother, sister hit me! Why aren't you punishing her? Do you not love me anymore?"
At his words, the woman gave him a light smack on the head in exasperation. "Punish what? If she wants to hit you, it's because she's giving you face! Stop talking nonsense!"
Right now, that girl was her precious treasure; anyone who dared to touch her would have to deal with her wrath!
The boy covered his head in disbelief, staring wide-eyed as he genuinely felt like crying this time. Just as he was about to pout again, the girl boldly shot him a glare. "Crying again? All you do is cry! What if the Immortal Sir gets upset because of your tears?"
