As Xia Wanling caught sight of the man’s silhouette in the distance, her heart tightened. The tall and composed figure unconsciously reminded her of someone from long ago.
She instinctively tightened her grip on Qin Guan's hand; he was her boyfriend.
Qin Guan had once told Wanling that his father was often away, and although his uncle was only a few years older than him, he was even stricter than his father.
When the man turned to face them, backlit by the light, Wanling felt a rush of blood surge to her head. She was certain she hadn’t mistaken him; Qin Guan's uncle was indeed Ling Ran.
"This is my uncle, Ling Ran," Song Qinguan introduced with a smile.
Wanling's mind went blank as she mechanically shook hands and greeted him.
A table filled with exquisite Japanese cuisine had been ordered according to Wanling's preferences, yet she found it tasteless.
"I’m going to the restroom to freshen up," Wanling said hurriedly before leaving the table.
The cold water splashed on her face, and her mind cleared slightly. She had heard from Jue Ming about his successful young uncle but never imagined that his uncle would be Ling Ran, the president of Ling Ran Group, a man worth billions at such a young age.
She had no idea how to face Ling Ran. Just thinking about the past made her tremble with fear, yet she forced herself to shake off those nightmarish memories and pushed the door open.
She saw Ling Ran standing outside, head bowed, quietly smoking in the darkness.
"Xia Wanling, I haven’t forgotten you. Don’t think you can play your tricks on Qin Guan; be careful how you end up," Ling Ran said coldly, the cigarette in his hand flickering.
"You leave him, or Longsheng will have to leave your family," Ling Ran added before turning and walking back into the private room.
That night, Wanling stood outside her dorm for a long time. For the first time, she deeply understood how sorrowful it was to watch the back of someone she loved walk away. The weather was turning cold, and perhaps no one would ever be able to give her warmth again.
After Song Qinguan escorted Wanling back to her dormitory, he turned around only to find that Wanling had returned to the first floor. She stood there like a lost child, staring blankly at him. Just as he approached her, Wanling received a phone call.
"Wanling, have you stirred up trouble with President Ling Ran again? Several major shareholders in the board suddenly said they want to sell their stocks, and it all relates to some high-level executives connected to Ling Ran," her father said helplessly over the phone.
"Child, don't be foolish anymore. Don't provoke Ling Ran again." Her father's tone suddenly became old and weary.
"Okay, I understand. It's fine, Dad, don't worry," Wanling replied before hanging up the phone.
Qin Guan looked at her with a smile, but when he saw her tear-filled eyes, he reached out to pull her into his embrace.
Wanling swatted Qin Guan's hand away and forced a smile as she said, "Qin Guan, we might have to end this."
"Is it just because I hid that my uncle is President Ling Ran?" Qin Guan thought she was just throwing a tantrum.
"He is who he is, and I am who I am. No, what I mean is..." Wanling's voice trembled as she struggled to maintain her smile, despite the overwhelming pain inside her that made her want to cry.
"What I mean is, from the very beginning, I never loved you." She turned her head away, finally allowing the tears to flow freely.
"Let's break up, Song Qinguan. Because you're not him, I don't want to waste any more time with you."
Wanling started to walk back to the dormitory building when Qin Guan suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"Wanling, explain clearly what’s going on?"
"I only wanted to get close to him through you. Now I've realized that through you, I can't even attract him. So, you're no longer useful."
Wanling spoke each word deliberately and then turned back to look at him. Under the moonlight, her tear-streaked face was filled with disdain and contempt.
Qin Guan could no longer bear her arrogant and unfamiliar gaze and turned away in anger.
Wanling walked back to her bedroom, thinking that she must be the best actress today.
She redialed the phone number from earlier.
“Dad, don’t worry. The board members won’t put pressure on us tomorrow. Longsheng won’t collapse.”
“Wanling, are you crying?” her father asked over the phone.
“It’s nothing. Dad, I won’t provoke Ling Ran anymore. I promise I won’t bother him again. You can rest assured, our Longsheng won’t be in the precarious situation it was a year ago.”
Wanling’s father’s company, Longsheng, was sponsored by the Ling Ran Group. A year ago, Longsheng faced a financial blockade from the Ling Ran Group, leading to cash flow issues and prompting major shareholders to withdraw their investments, causing the company’s stock price to plummet.
Wanling personally went to the Ling Ran Group to discuss matters with Ling Ran for an entire afternoon. After returning, she locked herself in her room for two days and nights without speaking a word. No one knew what had happened that day, but the Ling Ran Group indeed gave Longsheng a lifeline.
After hanging up, she thought about the events from a year ago and decisively turned off her phone.
Wanling hoped she could control her emotions, but after shutting it down, she found herself repeatedly whispering Qin Guan’s number over and over again.
She cried softly, “Qin Guan, I love you. Can you hear me?”
She continued, “Qin Guan, everything I said was a lie. I truly love you. Can you hear me?”
