Shen Du approached her with a bouquet in hand, his eyes sparkling with a smile. "Happy graduation."
"Thank you," she replied.
Yao Nian stared blankly as she accepted the bouquet, which was a blend of pale pink Manta roses and bellflowers, perfectly complementing her outfit for the day.
Noticing Xu Jiayi staring at Shen Du without moving, Yao Nian cleared her throat and introduced them. "Jiayi, this is a friend of my dad's."
"Oh," Xu Jiayi elongated her tone playfully, "is it Uncle Shen? I often hear Yao Nian mention you. I'm Xu Jiayi, a friend of hers."
Yao Nian shot her a glare, lowering her voice. "Who mentions you often?"
Shen Du chuckled softly. "Hello, I'm Shen Du."
Xu Jiayi winked at Yao Nian and cleverly said, "My mom's calling me; I’ll head over first. Oh, by the way, Yao Nian hasn't had dinner yet. Remember to take her out to eat later!"
If looks could kill, Xu Jiayi would have been a goner at that moment.
"Are you done?" Yao Nian gritted her teeth.
Xu Jiayi leaned closer and whispered, "Wow, you never told me Uncle Shen was this handsome! I suddenly understand you better now."
Yao Nian felt despair wash over her. "You could be a little louder; he's standing right in front of you!"
Xu Jiayi laughed and dashed away.
Looking into Shen Du's smiling eyes, Yao Nian tightened her grip on the bouquet. "I thought you wouldn't make it."
"Sorry," Shen Du replied. "I ran into a bit of trouble on the way."
"What happened?" Her voice rose with concern.
Shen Du explained seriously, "It's nothing major; I got rear-ended. The other driver was under the influence and is facing charges for reckless driving. It delayed me a bit while waiting for the police to arrive. But thankfully, I didn't miss your amazing speech."
Only then did she notice that there was a slight water stain on his left shoulder and his pants were damp as well.
"Ah!" Yao Nian quickly began to assess him. "Are you hurt? I'm so sorry! If I had known, I wouldn't have let you come!"
His tone carried a hint of helplessness. "It's just an accident; don't take everything upon yourself, young lady."
Shen Du looked at her with curiosity. "Why haven't you eaten dinner yet?"
"There wasn't enough time," Yao Nian replied softly.
She had to admit that during their previous encounters, the girl had always dressed casually and comfortably. Tonight, however, she had made an effort to look stunning, making it hard for anyone to overlook her charm.
Suddenly, I began to understand the exhaustion that President Yao must feel, Shen Du sighed.
Yao Nian was momentarily confused, not understanding why he would mention Yao Zhandong at that moment. When had he ever been so exhausted?
"You look beautiful dressed like this," Shen Du said with a smile. "If I were President Yao, I wouldn't be too at ease either."
Faced with his generous praise, Yao Nian could clearly feel her cheeks burning uncontrollably.
The last part of the graduation ceremony was taking a group photo. She had barely exchanged a few words with Shen Du before her classmates pulled her away for the picture.
Shen Du took the flowers from her hands. "You go ahead; I'll wait here for you."
Yao Nian worried that he might feel bored alone. "Why don't you wander around a bit first? I'll be back soon."
"There's no rush. Take more pictures with your classmates; you might not have this opportunity again in the future."
For this final group photo, and dressed up for the occasion, everyone was eager to capture the moment, taking their time and insisting on snapping a few more shots.
