The matter of the dead did not reach the attention of Xuande Emperor. Although he learned of it later, he did not express much anger. When the court officials presented the evidence from the envoy's group, he merely waved his hand, asking what good it would do to look at it again. They could not be punished now that they were all dead; it seemed they had paid with their lives. This matter was to be brushed aside.
After a moment of thought, Xuande Emperor wondered how many people from the envoy group had died so far. Mingze reported back to His Majesty that forty-seven had perished. That was only about thirty percent. It seemed he still found that number lacking.
The court officials expected Xuande Emperor to urge them to investigate and punish the killers, but until the morning court session concluded, he did not bring it up again. After court, Xuande Emperor assigned this case as the first task for the new organization to Gentle.
Two days later, Gentle submitted a muddled report, stating that a righteous person could not bear to see the injustice and had passed through Jingjing City, completing this task before leaving. This righteous individual appeared to have a style akin to that of bandits.
Using his eloquence, Gentle fabricated a story about a righteous faction in the martial world and interspersed tales of punishing evil and promoting good, successfully winning over Xuande Emperor, who praised him for his good work and rewarded him handsomely.
After serving Xuande Emperor for the night, Gentle encountered Cai Zhuo. Cai Zhuo looked at him with undisguised disdain in his eyes, while Gentle regarded Cai Zhuo with utmost respect, thanking him for not exposing him.
Cai Zhuo could not understand Gentle. Once an inconspicuous eunuch by the side of the Empress Dowager, he had gained favor after saving the emperor and was noticed by Xuande Emperor due to his pleasing appearance. He had served diligently in the emperor's palace for two months and seized the opportunity when the emperor established a supervisory organization, slightly showcasing his abilities and becoming a suitable candidate.
Cai Zhuo saw no ulterior motives in Gentle's eyes but thought about his own age and the need for a replacement for the head eunuch position in the palace. He decided to observe him as a bystander with a scrutinizing gaze, yet even after all this time, he found himself increasingly perplexed.
Cai Zhuo directly asked him what he wanted. Gentle answered without hesitation: to live—live as long as possible and live well.
"You commit treason against your sovereign every day; do you think you can keep fooling everyone like this? If discovered, it would mean my skills are lacking. For now, I can amuse His Majesty daily; I am quite satisfied with that."
Cai Zhuo glanced at him sideways. "You have little use beyond that."
"Little use is enough if it's suitable," Gentle replied. "Cai Gonggong, I am not your enemy; I can still be of service to you."
Cai Zhuo chuckled lightly. "You are currently favored by His Majesty; I cannot afford you. As long as you do not harm His Majesty or Great Jing, I have no time to watch your antics."
Cai Zhuo made his stance clear, and Gentle sincerely thanked him. Cai Zhuo avoided his gratitude and turned to leave.
Watching Cai Zhuo's retreating figure, Gentle murmured softly, "Cai Gonggong is getting old too. There are many good medicines in the Empress Dowager's private treasury; I will seek some for you. I hope you won't mind."
His voice was so low it sounded like he was talking to himself. Cai Zhuo's ears perked up at the sound but he merely sneered in contempt; flattering him would not work.
After being under control by the envoy group for two days, the gates of the Imperial Academy finally reopened. The first to step out was His Highness from Dayu Dynasty, accompanied only by ten guards as he made his way through narrow alleys directly toward Sang Qingxiao's Small Tavern.
