Sang Qingxiao emerged from her room, dressed and ready. What did it mean to be hard to wake up? Today, there had been some conflicts in the camp, which left them feeling resentful. They dared not confront us directly, so they resorted to petty tricks, using the excuse of needing rest due to the blinding light from the lady that had dazzled many.
The night watch duties were pushed onto us. We also wanted to investigate some matters during the night, so we accepted the task. As the fog rolled in, obscuring the path, we decided to wake a few people to accompany us since we were unfamiliar with the military camp.
After calling for a while, it took a whole incense stick's worth of time to rouse them. Each attempt yielded the same result. Among my team was someone skilled in medicine who assessed that it wasn't due to any drugs but simply deep sleep. If it were just one person, it could be excused, but this was becoming suspicious.
"How long have you been calling me?" I asked.
"Twice," came the reply. "Old Master woke up after just one call."
"Miss Sang, do you feel unwell?"
"No," she replied.
Sang Qingxiao glanced at Qi Shuo, who was two steps away and shrouded in fog. The mist was indeed bothersome. She formed a talisman in her hand and held it aloft, dispelling the fog and clearing her vision instantly.
Qi Shuo thanked her and immediately ordered a thorough search of the entire camp.
Yuan Chang yawned and quietly complained as he approached Sang Qingxiao. "So you're a Demon Catcher? I really offended you earlier."
Sang Qingxiao shot him a glance but chose to ignore him.
Yuan Chang chuckled lightly, unfazed by the rebuff. He continued to vent his frustrations to Sang Qingxiao. "Does The Office of Censors always have to be so paranoid? They make such a fuss over nothing! Do they think our military is so impoverished that we would attract thieves?"
Just as he finished speaking, someone from The Office of Censors was brought over.
Recognizing who it was, Yuan Chang's expression changed. "Qi Shuo, what do you mean by this? This person is just a merchant; why are you bullying him?"
"This merchant has quite a bit of wealth," Qi Shuo retorted, tossing over a jingling pouch of coins. In the entire camp, everyone except for those on patrol was fast asleep; only he led a few soldiers who were currently gathered around.
Regardless of which military branch's discipline it was, there were clear regulations against such behavior. "Yuan Commander," I had just inquired about this matter; it has been going on for some time now. Just because he is your concubine's brother doesn't mean you can turn a blind eye to his misconduct."
Yuan Chang glared fiercely at those kneeling and begging for mercy. Feeling humiliated by being caught in leverage, he dismissively said, "I wasn't aware of this matter. If he has committed an offense, I will deal with it myself since he is one of my men. Please show some leniency and hand him over."
Qi Shuo stepped closer and whispered, "Yuan Commander, perhaps you should open that pouch and take a look first."
Impatiently, Yuan Chang tore it open and glanced inside before saying dismissively, "Just a few pieces of jade."
"Just a few pieces of jade?" Qi Shuo scoffed. "Yuan Commander, you might want to take a closer look."
Hearing that mocking laughter stoked the fire within Yuan Chang; he could hardly contain himself as he reached into the pouch and pulled out its contents, thrusting them under Qi Shuo's nose. "It's just a few pieces of white jade; they're not worth much! What exactly are you trying to say? Are you deliberately picking on me?"
Qi Shuo picked up one piece of jade and turned it over; there were words inscribed on its back which he began to read aloud.
Consort Qin?
Only an emperor is qualified to call someone a consort, right?
