Qi Xiaomian hesitated.
Zhang Jingxue continued, "Are you worried that I would take advantage of her? With Miss Sang, how could I possibly bully her? In the Qi Family residence, the only place suitable for women is the back courtyard, and the cleanest spot there is my place. You look down on where I live; do you want to take Miss Sang to your mother instead?"
Qi Xiaomian quickly replied, "I appreciate your kindness, madam."
"Just a small effort on my part," Zhang Jingxue said.
She scrutinized Qi Xiaomian for a moment longer. "You are not my biological child. Knowing that you had a difficult childhood, I have no responsibility or obligation to protect you. Yet, unexpectedly, you have made a name for yourself. Your two brothers are ultimately not as good as you. When we were in Yezhou, you didn’t retaliate against Peng Er. It seems you don’t intend to hold grudges about the past. Although Peng Er pushed you off the cliff, he inadvertently gave you another choice, which is certainly better than continuing to rot in the Qi Family."
She chuckled lightly. "So, are you suggesting that your son was right to push me? Should I thank him for my current situation? His act of pushing you off the cliff was wrong, but his status means he won’t bear any responsibility for your death. In the Qi Family, that’s just how things are; being a child of Qi Hao, living is often worse than dying. No matter how one dies, those who remain continue their lives as usual, without even a hint of sorrow."
"Over the years, the Qi Family has gone further astray; it has become a quagmire. I just said that leaving the Qi Family is a good thing—better than rotting alongside them. Perhaps this will make you uncomfortable, thinking I’m trying to distance myself from past events, but this sentiment truly comes from my heart. When I heard that you were still alive, I felt envy for those two brothers of yours."
"If possible, I would want to send them far away, even if it meant living under an assumed identity and starting over; it would be better than living here. If you are determined, madam, it should be possible for you to leave as well."
"You know what kind of person Qi Hao is. If my son had your capabilities, even if it meant risking everything, I would send them away without hesitation. Unfortunately..."
"Madam," she paused, "does this mean you are under his control?"
Zhang Jingxue led the way while asking back, "Why did you suddenly come here?"
"To celebrate a birthday! Qi Hao was making quite a noise earlier; everyone outside must have heard him."
"Is it really just for the birthday?"
"First tell me how Qi Hao controls you," she insisted.
Zhang Jingxue didn’t answer and chose not to press further.
After sending Qi Xiaomian to the backyard, Zhang Jingxue first chose the best place for him to stay and then pointed out a young servant, giving a few instructions to attend to him.
Qi Xiaomian thanked Zhang Jingxue for her kindness, and only then did she lead Sang Qingxiao toward her own courtyard.
Along the way, she did not neglect Sang Qingxiao; their conversation was minimal, consisting of simple remarks about the scenery, maintaining a distance that did not feel awkward.
Sang Qingxiao sighed inwardly. This Lady Qi possessed an air of elegance, knowledge, eloquence, and social grace that rivaled the carefully cultivated daughters of high-ranking officials. It was worth noting that she came from the martial world, where people typically shunned such refined manners and placed little value on scholarly pursuits, believing that scholars were of no practical use.
Yet, she could effortlessly compose poetry and engage in literary exchanges. Although Sang Qingxiao was not well-versed in these matters, she could tell that Lady Qi spoke exceptionally well without making others feel inferior; it was simply that her demeanor was somewhat reserved.
