Qi Xiaomian let out a cold laugh, causing Cao Dong's face to flush red. He lowered his head to hide the resentment in his eyes and turned to the next table.

As Li Cu relentlessly pursued him, the demon finally revealed its true form. It was a Black Fish Spirit, taking on a scholarly appearance in human form. The foul smell emanated from its wounds; it was gravely injured and had not received timely treatment.
Seeing its condition, Li Cu furrowed her brow and halted her attack. "How did you get mixed up with them? You're badly hurt; did they do this to you?"
The Black Fish Spirit had just been hiding within the jade pendant and had witnessed the officials' little antics. Realizing that Cao Lin's actions had already been exposed, it glanced around and understood it couldn't fight back. After weighing its options, it could only force a smile and admit, "Yes, they did."
"They found out I was responsible for the Zhezhou Dam incident and captured me for severe interrogation. They brought me to the capital to make me bear the blame as the culprit."
Li Cu instinctively felt that its words were not entirely truthful. "Don't lie! My Xiaoxiao can detect lies quite well."
"I swear it's all true."
The surrounding officials, hearing the Black Fish Spirit's account, quickly forgot about the foul smell and began whispering among themselves.
Ze said to Qi Xiaomian that if this demon truly took responsibility for the crime, there might be a turning point in this case. If someone were to manipulate things from behind the scenes again, then perhaps Cao Lin could gain more credit.
However, the demon's sudden confession was too suspicious to be fully trusted.
"Has the Yongxin Marquis investigated the cause of the dam's collapse?" Ze asked again.
Qi Xiaomian shook his head. "All I know is that the dam is extremely sturdy; ordinary strength cannot destroy it."
"Not even someone like you?"
"Martial strength is still human strength," Qi Xiaomian replied.
Ze's expression turned serious. "This is troublesome; it might indeed be this demon's doing. Cao Lin could easily use this demon's confession to shirk responsibility. If we want to convict Cao Lin further, overturning this link is crucial."
The sense of crisis jolted Cao Lin awake from his drunken stupor, bringing him back to clarity.
As expected, Cao Lin not only borrowed from the past to explain the existence of demons but also tried to present it in a perfect manner. Upon first hearing it, it sounded quite plausible.
Li Cu ignored Cao Lin's evasions and focused solely on the Black Fish Spirit. "Since you insist that you did it, there must be a reason behind it. Do you know how many lives were lost when the dam broke? What kind of deep-seated hatred drove you to destroy an entire city?!"
The Black Fish Spirit replied calmly, "Humans are not innocent either. You blame me for destroying a city, but do you know how many clans humans have wiped out in our waters?! I was once just an ordinary Xiao Hei fish, living happily among my kin. But with just a few nets, humans destroyed my home. I endured countless hardships to cultivate into a demon, all for the sake of revenge against humanity."
"Ha! If your only goal was revenge, wouldn't it have been easier to flood Luzhou?"
"Indeed, Luzhou is mostly flat and low-lying, making it easier to exact revenge. However, the people of Luzhou regard Lord Cao as their official, while the citizens of Ze Province say that Yan Daren rules too harshly. Thus, I felt compassion and chose to strike at Ze Province instead."
