Year of the Sequence
Outside Cthulhu Town, the sky was shrouded in dark clouds, creating an oppressive atmosphere as if engulfed by shadows. The visibility was low, and one could barely make out the forests beyond the town. The trees resembled pines, but their bark and leaves were a deep black.
The silence within the woods was unnerving. If one stared long enough, they might catch a glimpse of strange figures moving in the shadows. It was clear that these bizarre shapes could not be human; even those that appeared humanoid were certainly not people.
Since the discovery of Cthulhu Town, many had shown interest in the boundary surrounding it. This area was known to be the domain of Anomalous Entities. Understanding what lay beyond the town could greatly aid research into these entities.
Numerous expeditions had been organized to explore the outskirts of the town. While some useful information was indeed retrieved, very few returned alive—almost one in ten at best. Total annihilation was the most common outcome.
After repeated attempts to explore the outer regions, no further expeditions were organized. The reason was clear: the area outside was teeming with Anomalous Entities, all of which posed high levels of danger, Sequence levels, and Unknown Horror classifications. The conclusion drawn by exploration teams was that the further one ventured from the town, the more powerful the Anomalous Entities became; any attempt to explore further was tantamount to a death sentence.
According to previous expedition records, even with powerful Sequencers providing escort, teams had only managed to venture five kilometers from Cthulhu Town. Beyond that distance roamed formidable Anomalous Entities that, for reasons unknown, could not easily set foot in Cthulhu Town itself.
For this reason, everyone who comes to Cthulhu Town follows an unspoken rule:
"If you don't want to die, don't leave Cthulhu Town."
A shimmering light burst forth at the entrance of Cthulhu Town. The light was a snowy blue, resembling a tunnel through time and space, forming the Light Vortex. A foot clad in leather boots stepped out, followed by a dozen others emerging one after another.
Yous, at the Cthulhu altar.
Merry tucked her long hair behind her ear and surveyed Cthulhu Town, seemingly searching for something. She was strikingly beautiful, as if surrounded by stars, with the group of newcomers forming a protective circle around her.
The golden-haired middle-aged man known as Yous, the leader who first emerged from the Light Vortex, pointed towards the Stone Platform.
"Over there, follow me."
Merry spoke first, "After you offer your sacrifice, if there’s no response within half an hour, we will escort you out of Cthulhu Town."
Yous looked at Merry with a hint of disdain in his eyes. It was well-known that when coming to Cthulhu Town to offer sacrifices to Cthulhu, the offering must be the most beloved person of the sacrificer.
Merry had hired Yous and his Sequence Team to escort her to Cthulhu Town to sacrifice her offering to Cthulhu and fulfill her wish.
Merry was indeed as beautiful as a celestial being; before the End of the Sequence, she would have undoubtedly been a major star in Europe and America. However, beneath that beautiful exterior lay a heart that was ruthless and even venomous.
"Alright."
Merry cast a sidelong glance at Yous. She sensed that Yous and the others held contempt for her, but she didn’t care. As long as Cthulhu could grant her wish, what did their disdain matter?
"Same old rules: triangular formation. Report any movements immediately."
Yous took the lead, guiding Merry towards the Stone Platform in Cthulhu Town.
During the period, Merry passed by a house in Cthulhu Town. Through the glass of one of the windows, she was horrified to discover a pair of eerie eyes staring back at her.
It was an Anomalous Entity.
Instinctively, she stepped back to Yous' side.
"Don't be afraid, the Anomalous Entity inside the house won't come out to attack us."
Yuris looked up at the half-moon hanging in the sky, its phases shifting between light and dark.
"As long as it's not a full moon, the Anomalous Entities won't come out. That's the rule in Cthulhu Town, even the Anomalous Entities have to abide by it."
"Oh? Could it be that there are rule-based Anomalous Entities here, measuring the other Anomalous Entities in Cthulhu Town by these rules?"
"I don't know; no one knows who established the rules of Cthulhu Town."
"It seems I might have made a bit of a loss hiring you all; this trip doesn't seem dangerous at all."
With this newfound information about Cthulhu Town, Merry teased lightly.
