Yang Yan stepped out of the carriage and immediately recognized the neatly dressed individuals, their every move adhering to strict protocols. They were clearly military personnel, and Yang Yan couldn't deny it. After all, he had some experience in this regard. He never expected to encounter them here, especially not in a place like the Anping Kingdom, which was considered a unique institution compared to the Jinxiu Camp of Great Jin or the Black Jade Shrine of the Qin Empire. Over the years, Anping Kingdom had managed to stand alongside the Seven Major Feudal States, and if it weren't for the Prison Administration situated between the four major vassal states, it might have long been extinguished.
Gu Ping, on the other hand, was rather clueless about such matters. Unlike Yang Yan, who had led the Jinxiu Camp for several years and was well aware of the intricacies involved, Gu Ping had little understanding. Despite the distance separating them, every special institution had its own spies, especially in a powerful empire like Great Jin.
Someone was approaching them.
A figure clad in black was indeed making their way over. Although they appeared to be moving leisurely, they were employing a technique commonly used in martial arts to close distances swiftly. However, Gu Ping sensed no trace of spiritual energy from this person; perhaps they were just an ordinary martial artist.
"Greetings from the Prison Administration's Si Cheng, Bu Jiangli. I see you all here; may I ask where you are headed?"
It was unreasonable; many in the horse team burst into laughter upon hearing that name. Bu Luo looked at Bu Jiangli with an expression that suggested he had grown accustomed to such reactions.
Dressed in rough cloth, Bu Jiangli maintained his composure and politely requested that they not interfere with official business. "I assure you, we are quite reasonable."
Bu Jiangli observed Yang Yan closely. Years of experience told him that among this group, only those two could possibly respond to his inquiries. From a drunken old man nearby, Bu Jiangli felt an intense sense of crisis—an inexplicable intuition warned him that this group was not as simple as they appeared.
"We're heading north to reward our troops," he explained. "The wealth we brought has been exchanged for food and drink; it's just a small contribution."
"Thank you very much," replied a young lady among them. "May I ask where you hail from?"
"I come from Great Jin," she said. "My family has some assets; this trip is purely personal and does not represent my family's stance."
"Miss, you are quite considerate. May I ask your esteemed name?"
Bu Jiangli expressed his gratitude repeatedly. In just a few short sentences, Yang Yan had not revealed her identity but had made her stance clear, indicating that she had powerful backing and did not intend to hide her identity. Instead, she distanced herself from the forces behind her, perhaps to prevent them from thinking that her supporters were trying to interfere. After all, she had come alone into this perilous situation, and regardless of her true intentions, it was enough to evoke admiration.
"Yang Yan, is that the same as Gu Hong?"
Bu Jiangli subtly furrowed his brow at Yi Dong. He had never heard those two names before; they must be locals.
"If you two don't mind, why not let us escort you with our supply troops from Anping Kingdom?"
The young man did not look down on them. Yuan San was furious, thinking they were nothing special and merely there to steal business.
"It’s a misunderstanding. It’s just that going further north isn’t safe anymore. The territory of the mainland isn’t vast enough for the celestial beings flying around freely, but for those who travel on foot, it can be quite extensive. Moreover, there are no solid defenses against enemy forces. It’s quite common to encounter troops that specialize in cutting off supplies when heading north. It's better to be cautious."
"Hmph."
Yuan San snorted coldly and glanced at Yang Yan; after all, that employer was the one who truly held the power.
"Very well."
Yang Yan exchanged a glance with Gu Ping and smiled as she agreed with Dong Lai. It seemed that Gu Ping had no intention of revealing Cheng Zong's tiger skin banner for the time being.
The two caravans quickly converged and slowly headed toward the north, shrouded in thick clouds.
