On the following morning, Gu Ping went to see Dou Elder at Dan Hall. Dou Elder understood that Gu Ping was about to leave and handed over his alchemy notes for Gu Ping to study diligently, saying that they might come in handy one day.
After much contemplation, Gu Ping made his way to Liu Shizu's residence. Although it had been several months since his last visit, it still looked just as it did on his first day at the academy. The flowers along the path bloomed abundantly, and butterflies flitted about as if there were no changing seasons at all.
The moonlight shone brightly, and Gu Ping greeted the young man he had met before.
"There's no need for such formalities, Senior Brother. I've been well lately, but I can't help but notice that Liu Shizu seems to be in a bad mood. After all these years, it's the first time I've seen him like this," the young man said as he led Gu Ping into the courtyard.
As soon as they entered, Gu Ping spotted Liu Shizu standing in the center of the pavilion. The Great Master looked extremely haggard, and Gu Ping couldn't understand what had happened to him. The sight of Liu Shizu's delicate features, now worn and weary, caused a pang of pain in Gu Ping's heart. It was a look that would make any man ache for her.
"Disciple pays respects to Master," he said, bowing deeply.
"I didn't think you would come," Liu Shizu replied, his tone surprisingly light.
"You are my master," Gu Ping insisted. "I came to seek your guidance regarding Yi Dong."
Liu Shizu seemed to think that Gu Ping had never regarded him as a true master.
"Why?"
Liu Shizu extended a leg, signaling Gu Ping to stop asking questions. He stood up and walked over to Gu Ping, pulling out a small pale pink seal from his robe and placing it on Gu Ping's lap.
He hoped that Gu Ping would accept it. Liu Shizu was a person of great integrity, but two months ago, he had received a letter that weighed heavily on him. The seal was a reminder of his initial request for someone to carry on his teachings. He had read Gu Ping's poetry and even sent someone to investigate his background, believing that Gu Ping would not disappoint him. However, Gu Ping felt he had strayed far from those initial hopes.
What did this have to do with Liu Shizu's own matters?
Gu Ping hesitated to refuse the seal. As Liu Shizu attempted to reclaim it, he found it firmly grasped in Gu Ping's hands.
Disciple has left, hoping to return and visit the master someday.
Liu Shizu watched Gu Ping's departing figure. She could have exposed Gu Ping's true identity or used the incident with the Light Canon to threaten her, but she didn't. Deep down, she sincerely hoped that Gu Ping could become her disciple, that she could break free from those constraints and truly grow.
