Ling Chanzi did not deny it. The monks in the temple, including the Old Abbot, could only offer gentle advice, which held little real authority. Moreover, as Ling Chanzi spoke of the Buddha commanding him to exorcise demons, the Old Abbot had even less reason to stop him. All he could do now was silently pray for Ling Chanzi.
At the entrance, Gu Ping and his companions were preparing to leave when they saw the Old Abbot rushing over to see them off. They all paused in their tracks.
"There’s no need to see me off any further," the Old Abbot said. "I will take good care of Ling Chanzi. Please rest assured."
"Then may we have a safe journey," Gu Ping replied. He thought that since the Buddha had arranged for Ling Chanzi and Shizhi to come and exorcise demons, it was likely that this fate was part of the Buddha's plan. He believed that such an outstanding disciple would not be easily abandoned by the Buddha.
Seeing that Gu Ping had guessed his thoughts, the Old Abbot chose not to say much more and offered a few words of comfort instead.
"Then I will take your good wishes to heart," Gu Ping said. "I must take my leave now with Ling Chanzi and my friend. It may be a long time before we meet again under the bright moon. Last night’s hospitality from you, Abbot, I do not know when I can repay it. I hope you will have an early return to the West."
After sending their blessings, Gu Ping turned and left. Ling Chanzi waved goodbye to the Old Abbot, clearly reluctant to part ways. Although they had only spent a short four or five months together, Ling Chanzi felt a strong attachment and would likely visit Jinhuang Temple often if given the chance.
As he saw familiar decorations, Gan Yuan suddenly felt a bit bored. The decor in Lingyuan Pavilion was identical no matter where one looked; even the color of the pillars was uniformly painted, lacking any creativity whatsoever.
Arriving at the counter, Gan Yuan took out a silver ingot and placed it on the bar. He asked the shopkeeper, "Has a young man named Gu Ping come through here?"
The shopkeeper flipped through his records and shook his head. Looking at the silver on the counter, he asked if there was someone specific Gan Yuan was looking for.
"Just an ordinary person," Gan Yuan replied.
"There shouldn’t be anyone like that," the shopkeeper said. "There are many people on both floors of Bu Luo; if he were an ordinary person..."
Gan Yuan understood what the shopkeeper meant and shook his head. Turning towards the stairs, he added, "If such a person does come by later, tell him to look for me on the sixth floor."
Minghong.
After speaking, the Shopkeeper quickly collected the silver left by Gan Yuan at the counter. He glanced towards the door, worried that he might accidentally miss someone named Gu Ping.
Upon reaching the sixth floor, Gan Yuan spotted Hong Ling and his companions, who had already prepared the wine, but he did not see Hong Yulong. In the center of the sixth floor was a large round table, occupying most of the limited space available on the top floor.
Where is Hong Yulong?
Gan Yuan chose a particularly strategic position where he could see both the traffic on Lou Dong and the scenic view of the back mountains of Lingyuan Pavilion. He was not too far from Hong Ling and his group, yet not too close either. It was unclear what Gan Yuan meant by that gesture.
They should be arriving soon; where are our people?
Hong Ling wore a displeased expression due to their somewhat unreliable ally. A few days ago, if it weren't for Feiyuxuzong's intervention, that person named Chongming Guang would likely have met his end in Hades. At a critical moment, they had been saved by someone else while their Jade Void Sect members merely stood by watching, which certainly did not earn them any goodwill from their allies.
They are on their way.
Gan Yuan patted his leg, signaling the Singer to start playing music. He then beckoned to a maid at the entrance, pointing to the Wine Flask in front of Hong Ling. Understanding Gan Yuan's intention, the maid quickly went to East Tower to fetch a similar jug of wine and placed it before Gan Yuan.
Surely Jade Void Sect won't drop the ball at a crucial moment again, Hong Ling said with a hint of sarcasm.
Gan Yuan poured himself a cup of wine and downed it in one gulp, wearing an insincerely exaggerated smile as he said that his Jade Void Sect would ensure those bright fellows would come and go without issue.
I hope I'm not just boasting, Gan Yuan thought. Seeing Gan Yuan's insincere smile made Hong Ling feel disgusted; he continued to mock him coldly from the side, warning that if it came to blows later on, he might end up with broken teeth that he'd have to swallow himself.
Let him see who is talking big.
Upon hearing that voice, Hong Ling's face lit up with joy. Naturally, Hong Yulong, who had just arrived, was there to support his own people. Hong Yulong thought it would be a good idea to joke around occasionally; it might even strengthen their friendship.
Ha, ha. Gan Yuan chuckled awkwardly. Hong Brother knew that Gan Yuan was an honest person who never boasted.
I hope it really goes as Gan Brother said, and those people come and go without any trouble. Otherwise, if they fail to deal with the snake and end up getting bitten instead, it would be a loss of face and a loss of dignity, only serving to amuse others. I don't deny that. Ha, ha.
No way, heh, heh, no way.
Gan Yuan could certainly hear the sarcasm in Hong Yulong's words. However, during the previous siege against Chongming Guang, they from the Jade Void Sect had indeed not played much of a role. Before proving themselves, Gan Yuan could only endure it; after all, the main force of the cultivators from the Eastern Layer relied heavily on Hong Yulong.
As they spoke, Hong Yulong approached Gan Yuan's side and picked up the wine flask. Just as he was about to pour some wine, he suddenly noticed Lou Dong arriving with a rather peculiar group of people. In the center was a young man accompanied by a little monk and a swordsman.
Hong Yulong thought that Coco might be the person they had been searching for all along and blurted out two words.
He's here.
