Lin Zhou stared at the body of Luchenzhou, mouth agape but unable to make a sound. Just moments ago, she had witnessed Luchenzhou swing his sword and strike her down. Her mind was a blank, and now she found herself unable to think. Although Luchenzhou was not truly dead, that substitute doll held a value equivalent to a life.
What could she possibly do? Go and kill Hu Xiyan? She couldn't do that; it was simply impossible. How could she stop everyone from killing him? Everyone was working so hard to prevent Hu Xiyan from becoming a monster and hurting others again. What was she supposed to do?
Lin Zhou stood helplessly to the side. Luchenzhou had already wasted a life-saving item for her sake. If they were caught again, Coco would be doomed. Could she really interfere with them? They didn't have a substitute doll.
Mu Qinglong shouted from the other side, having already cast his spell. The small Azure Leaf grew enormous and moved toward the monster that was Hu Xiyan, gradually shrinking as it aimed to trap the creature.
The group surrounding the monster began to withdraw from the area covered by Azure Leaf. Initially, only Luchenzhou and Hu Xiyan remained engaged in combat. It was evident that Hu Xiyan had lost his sanity, attacking his fellow disciples out of sheer rage.
Lin Zhou watched as the Azure Leaf shrank further and felt compelled to plead with Mu Qinglong to let Hu Xiyan go, to spare his life—even if he had become a monster. But Lin Zhou knew better; she understood that Hu Xiyan's current state was beyond recognition, and he would not even look at her one last time.
Luchenzhou understood this too, as did Mu Qinglong. So Luchenzhou waited in the courtyard while Mu Qinglong manipulated the Azure Leaf. In truth, none of them had considered pursuing Hu Xiyan; they all knew that if Hu Xiyan reached Coco, there would be no need for anyone to kill him.
Bu Luo sought some psychological comfort in this situation, telling himself that he had already killed Hu Xiyan—that he had ended the life of his own brother disciple. He had transformed into a monster, which meant he could end Hu Xiyan's life without feeling guilty.
But was it really that simple? Even if he convinced himself of this to alleviate his guilt, could it truly justify his actions? Just like when Hu Xiyan once asked why he had to die—no one wanted to be the one who killed him first. So there lingered a bit of selfishness within him. When Lin Zhou cried out for help, everyone instinctively halted their movements. This distraction caused Luchenzhou to lose focus, and Mu Qinglong failed to provide timely assistance.
The Azure Leaf managed to trap the monster in place, no matter how much it struggled; it remained immobile. The creature pounded against the Light Barrier created by Azure Leaf as if it were a cornered beast fighting for survival.
Mu Qinglong remained unfazed, seemingly deaf to all sounds around him. He began casting another spell, murmuring incantations as he extended his right leg toward the Light Barrier containing Azure Leaf, channeling his magic within.
A flame erupted behind the Light Barrier, a blazing orange fire that burned fiercely. Even through the barrier, one could feel the immense heat. The monster let out a painful roar, slamming against the Light Barrier with increasing force, producing loud thuds.
Lin Zhou saw the monster's face, which resembled Hu Xiyan's, contorted in agony. Unable to hold back any longer, she rushed toward the Light Barrier but was stopped by her companions.
Lin Zhou watched as the flames gradually turned the monster to ash. She noticed Luchenzhou shaking his head expressionlessly while her brothers held her back, leaving her powerless. Regret washed over her—why had she insisted on coming here? If she hadn’t been so willful in wanting to visit the Dust Realm, would Hu Xiyan have accompanied her? If Hu Xiyan hadn’t come, this disaster wouldn’t have happened; he wouldn’t have turned into a monster.
Lost in thought, Lin Zhou abandoned the idea of rushing toward the Light Barrier. She collapsed to the ground and cried out in despair. Her heart-wrenching sobs filled the air, silencing any previous calmness among her companions. They had thought this mission would be simple, but before they even saw a shadow of their target, someone had already lost their life.
As the monster's cries faded away, only Lin Zhou's weeping remained in the courtyard. The ginkgo trees were broken, leaves scattered everywhere. No one comforted Lin Zhou; they quietly went inside to pack their things. After experiencing such a tragic loss, the Sect's mission felt far from complete.
Time passed without Lin Zhou noticing until she finally stopped sobbing and looked up. The first thing she saw was Mu Qinglong standing beside her left leg, watching her intently.
"It's time," Mu Qinglong said with three simple words as he handed her a small box. Lin Zhou took the box, which was meant to hold precious medicinal herbs, and opened it. A wave of heat surged through her throat as she opened her mouth and forced out two words with a hoarse voice.
"Thank you."
The box was meant to contain rare medicine that could regenerate severed limbs; inside it held Hu Xiyan’s ashes.
Gu Ping had been outside the Great Jin Empire for nearly a month now. Every time he encountered Great Jin citizens, he felt an overwhelming sense of confidence—something he had never seen among Liu Xiaping's people.
