Without much thought, Gu Ping turned around and approached Red Fox, crouching down to take out the external injury medicine his mother had prepared for him from his backpack. He began to bandage the injured leg of Red Fox in front of him.
Suddenly, Gu Ping felt a sharp pain in his shoulder. "Ah!" he shouted, abruptly opening his eyes. Liu Lao Jiu was right in front of him, tending to his shoulder. The intense pain jolted Gu Ping awake from his memories.
He remembered that after that incident, the fox had followed him. When he set off from the capital, Gu Ping had found it outside the city and instructed it to wait for him in Tuan City. Knowing that it was an ordinary fox, he believed it could understand him, so he pointed it in the right direction and let it go on its own. He hadn’t expected to arrive late; fortunately, it wasn’t too late.
Liu Lao Jiu started a campfire nearby; they would be spending another night outdoors. Gu Ping leaned against the soft back of Fox Spirit and drifted into a deep sleep.
In Liu Qi's study, Eunuch Afu looked gravely at the young man before him. The unique aura of the Ninth Underworld made it immediately clear that this person came from the Nine Netherworlds, a realm distinct from the World of Mortals.
There were no Red Skies or nights there, only an eternal twilight that made the world seem monotonous and dull. The rivers flowed like lead, the soil was barren like a desert, and plants grew only towards the east. This world was known as the Ninth Underworld.
Every person from the Nine Netherworlds carried an aura that sent chills down one's spine. If a child were to see such a person, they might mistake them for a ghost.
What could possibly bring someone from the Nine Netherworlds here? Afu lifted his Dust Whisk and swung it forcefully to the side, producing a crisp cracking sound in the air.
The young man maintained a smile as he replied, "He is here to completely destroy our so-called light."
So they were enemies then. Afu prepared to strike; he knew that Liu Qi's Imperial Guard lay in ambush around them before he entered, but he hadn’t expected there to be someone from the Ninth Underworld by Liu Qi's side.
"The light I speak of was completely extinguished half a year ago; there’s no need for further resistance," the young man stated as if declaring a fact.
"Why joke about such things? Isn’t light right before us?" Afu countered while stepping back. Soldiers hidden in the beams outside the hall leaped forward, surrounding Afu in the center.
"Isn't that so? Then just eliminate me along with it," the young man said, rubbing his legs. No, he preferred to be called 'Young Master.' His name was Wei Wuyou, and he wanted to be remembered because after tomorrow, he would truly never see the light again.
Afu was engaged in a fierce battle with Qin Wei nearby, which left Liu Qi feeling terrified. How could his guards be so powerless against such an aged eunuch? In just a few moves, Afu had dispatched one of them. Liu Qi had no idea that someone as formidable as Afu was hiding nearby, which only heightened his fear.
Wei Wuyou didn't wait for Afu to defeat all the guards before he made his move. He drew his sword from his waist and lunged at Afu. With a swift motion, Afu used his Dust Whisk to deflect the blade, and the two exchanged blows back and forth. The Imperial Guards around them didn't even have a chance to intervene.
Seeing the flashes of sword light and the brilliance of combat, Liu Qi felt anxious. It seemed like neither side could gain the upper hand. Would he ever be able to sleep peacefully after letting this Eunuch escape? He needed to resolve this quickly.
As they fought, Wei Wuyou wondered aloud, "What kind of light am I seeking?"
"Oh, how difficult it is," Afu's voice dripped with mockery, making Wei Wuyou feel a sting of irritation. After all, he was just a young man; how could he possibly know that the Ninth Underworld had no sun?
"Is the sun what I call light? Then why shouldn't I worship the Sun God?" he thought.
The light he sought might be something he would never see again, Afu lamented.
If he couldn't see it, then what was there to hope for? Wei Wuyou shook his sword, creating six dazzling flowers of light with his blade. Afu had to retreat step by step until he found himself cornered. With a swing of his Dust Whisk, Wei Wuyou felt an immense weight pushing him back several steps.
The two paused, facing each other. Afu said, "He seeks a way out of the deep palace that can no longer confine his aged body. He seeks for darkness to no longer obscure his vision. He desires a world free from shadows and for schemes and plots to dissipate forever. He seeks light that will endure in this world."
"How ridiculous! If Wei Guangming cannot achieve it, how can a mere eunuch like me?" Wei Wuyou raised his sword and declared before charging at Afu once more.
This time, Afu did not use the Dust Whisk to defend himself; instead, he tucked it into his left sleeve. Liu Qi shouted from the side, "This is bad! Quickly kill him!"
"Emperor Dong," I see the light," Afu said as he took out a talisman. Wei Wuyou's eyes widened in terror as Dong gently squeezed it, and in that instant, everything transformed into a brilliant light.
Liu Qi saw it, or perhaps he didn't; a flash of red light engulfed Wei Wuyou in an instant, along with those guards and the grand hall around him.
The words that echoed in his mind were Afu's earlier statement: "Emperor Dong, I see the light."
