With a loud bang, Liu Lao Jiu was once again sent flying to the ground by a Willow Branch. This was already the third time. Each time Liu Lao Jiu got within five meters of the Tree Demon, countless Willow Branches would suddenly appear, and no matter how many there were, at least one would strike Liu Lao Jiu, sending him sprawling. Each encounter left behind bloody wounds on his body.
Gu Ping's vision was blurred. Now, as he tried to catch his breath, Pure Fox was up ahead, covering Liu Lao Jiu, determined to eliminate the Tree Demon completely. Liu Lao Jiu charged forward again and again, fighting with all his might. Both the man and the fox were putting in their efforts; why should he just lie there pretending to be dead?
Gu Ping gradually moved closer to the Tree Demon, shielded by Liu Lao Jiu and the Fox Spirit. He was now just five meters away from the Tree Demon.
Eight meters, seven meters—just two steps away. Although there was only a meter of distance left, it was enough for Gu Ping to move those two steps. He halted for a moment and did not advance toward Choking. He looked at Liu Lao Jiu and said, "Hey, do you have any tricks up your sleeve? Can we fight for real now?"
Liu Lao Jiu shouted back loudly, "Yes! Let's go all out!"
"Let's go all out!" Gu Ping replied as he suddenly lunged forward.
Gu Ping first threw the torch in his hand at the Tree Demon and then, gritting his teeth against the pain, took a big step forward. With his uninjured leg, he received a long knife from Liu Lao Jiu. It seemed as if they had coordinated perfectly; Liu Lao Jiu naturally handed over the long knife to Gu Ping without any hesitation.
Gu Ping swiftly slashed with the knife, cutting through a Willow Branch that had come at them. A massive figure leaped over them, blocking the fierce onslaught of the Tree Demon like a storm. Gu Ping then tossed the long knife behind him and crouched down.
Liu Lao Jiu leaped into action, catching the long knife with his left leg extended. As he swept the back of the blade through the air, Gu Ping clearly saw fiery red patterns appear on it—distinct from the blood-red hue surrounding them. In that blood-soaked territory of the Tree Demon, it was easy to distinguish between blood red and fiery red.
Liu Lao Jiu did not hesitate to charge toward the Tree Demon; instead, he dashed past the Fox Spirit and then took a quick step forward. This time, no Willow Branches or twigs could obstruct him. The flames on the back of the blade seemed to solidify along its length, growing ever brighter.
Liu Lao Jiu smirked and fittingly said, "Demon, die."
The blazing long knife struck deep into the Tree Demon's trunk. Green sap flowed out like blood while being scorched by the flames on the blade, releasing a charred scent that resembled burnt plant matter more than singed animal fur.
Gu Ping watched as Liu Lao Jiu swung his long knife, severing a willow tree in half, and then struck a pose he thought was impressive. The sound of a wail echoed in the air.
Finally, Gu Ping let out a sigh of relief and collapsed onto the ground without a second thought.
Liu Lao Jiu rushed over to help Gu Ping up, shouting for the Fox Demon to come quickly and carry him; they needed to hurry.
Their horses had already been drained of blood by the Tree Demon, lying lifeless not far away. Liu Lao Jiu cursed, while Bu Luo could see that the danger had passed. The disheveled appearance of Yong Tuo was now at Liu Lao Jiu's side.
Shaking off the tension from the earlier crisis, Liu Lao Jiu reached for the gourd at his waist, only to remember that he had forgotten to light the wine. Angrily, he smashed the gourd against the ground. What a waste! He had lost so much; he definitely needed to wake up that brat Zhai Liao to share a drink with him.
After saying this, Liu Lao Jiu looked up and noticed that the Fox Spirit was already carrying Gu Ping away towards Choking. "Hey, where are you going?" he exclaimed before rushing after them.
Gu Ping was fainting on the Fox Spirit's back, unaware if he was alive or dead. Deep down, he felt as if he had already died, recalling a few months ago when he first encountered Pure Fox.
He remembered holding a wooden stick from somewhere, swinging it wildly in an attempt to drive away a pack of hyenas that were lurking nearby. Those vile creatures were watching him intently, as if something delicious lay behind him.
Among them was a Snow Red Fox nearly two meters long, its legs marked with bite wounds that clearly indicated it had been attacked by those hyenas. When Gu Ping glanced at the Fox Spirit, he saw it being chased by the very same pack.
What surprised Gu Ping was that despite its injuries, the fox was still faster than some of the hyenas. Bu Luo noted that the hyenas relied on their numbers; initially, they had cornered the fox in the very spot where Gu Ping now stood.
Why did Gu Ping feel compelled to help such a beleaguered fox? He didn’t know. He sensed something in its eyes as it looked toward him—an expression of disdain for weakness and an unwillingness to give up. Whatever it was, Gu Ping picked up a stick from the ground and charged forward to shield the fox behind him.
At that moment, Gu Ping couldn’t see what the fox was doing or its eyes; all he knew was that he wanted to fend off the approaching hyenas. But those hyenas were patient; they possessed a certain caution that most dogs lacked—they were afraid of getting hurt.
Gu Ping clearly saw the blue light flying out from behind him, splitting a hyena in two, sharper than any knife he had ever encountered. The hyena's blood splattered onto the summer grass. The remaining hyenas exchanged wary glances and cautiously began to retreat; they were not selfish, but rather afraid of injury. Any sign of harm would cause them to flee quickly.
Perhaps that was the nature of the hyenas' survival, or maybe they could find a better way to exist in that realm.
