Chapter 139: Bai Luo's Speculation
As Bai Luo and Lorna walked out of the apartment side by side, Lorna still felt as if she were in a dream. Three big question marks lingered in her mind—what had they done? Where was the Cosmic Cube? Why had they just left?
These questions were likely also on the mind of Phil Coulson, who was watching them closely from a distance.
To his surprise, Bai Luo and the others hadn’t made a move at all; the apartment was intact, and they had simply walked out without a care. What astonished him even more was that Bai Luo and Lorna were personally escorted out by the target—a young Japanese man wearing thick-rimmed glasses.
Observing their expressions, aside from Lorna’s somewhat stiff demeanor, Bai Luo and the young Japanese man were engaged in lively conversation, appearing to be good friends.
Coulson felt a wave of frustration wash over him. At that moment, he couldn’t help but wonder—had Bai Luo known these people all along?
Meanwhile, Bai Luo bid farewell to Sato Ryuseki and continued walking forward with Lorna.
Although S.H.I.E.L.D. had already secured the area around the apartment, given their professionalism, it was impossible for any S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to be seen in the direction of Sato Ryuseki’s apartment before they chose to act. Of course, as a Reincarnator, Bai Luo might have other ways to sense that he had already fallen into S.H.I.E.L.D.'s web, but he simply hadn’t acknowledged it.
Perhaps that was indeed the case. After watching Bai Luo’s figure disappear from view, Sato Ryuseki slowly exhaled and turned around, only to find Loki staring intently at him.
He smiled slightly and said, “Loki, it seems we need to have another chat.”
…
On the other side, after confirming that she and Bai Luo had exited Sato Ryuseki's observation range, Lorna could no longer hold back her irritation. “Bai Luo—what are you doing? Aren’t we here for the Cosmic Cube?”
Bai Luo smiled and replied, “Didn’t we just get it?”
“Get it? Are you kidding me?” Lorna retorted.
“They’re not going to keep it from us. Once everything is settled, they will naturally hand over the Cosmic Cube,” Bai Luo assured her.
Lorna shot him a skeptical glance. “I don’t really trust that Japanese guy’s words; you…”
Bai Luo chuckled. “Oh… can I take that as you’re indirectly complimenting me?”
Lorna couldn't help but tug at the corners of her mouth.
Bai Luo, however, didn't wait for Lorna to ask further. He said directly, "They... of course aren't that trustworthy, but... since they have gone this far, why not take advantage of the situation? After all, our people can withdraw."
Lorna replied, "Then..."
Although Bai Luo had said that, Lorna still looked somewhat confused, clearly unsure of what to say next.
Bai Luo smiled and said, "Just wait and be ready to lend a hand when the time comes."
Lorna looked at Bai Luo with a disdainful expression and said, "You've already decided that we should withdraw. What help can we provide?"
This time, Bai Luo shook his head with a smile, playing with the Hatsune Miku music box in his hands, and stopped saying anything more.
Just moments ago, Sato Ryuseki had explained how to use this item. It was said that it had two chances to summon Hatsune Miku for battle.
Bai Luo believed it was true, but he was certain that using this item wouldn't be as simple as Sato Ryuseki made it out to be. It probably required a specific person or some sort of contractual relationship to operate it properly.
Moreover, Bai Luo was sure that Sato Ryuseki's claims about the Cosmic Cube were mostly nonsense. As someone who had traversed countless infinite worlds, Bai Luo might not know everything, but he had a firm grasp on the psychology of these Reincarnators. Once they dealt with the Buddha Light Team in their group battle, the Cosmic Cube would undoubtedly be taken away by them. This was certain; they had that advantage and didn't need to worry about local characters from the Marvel Universe chasing them down in the infinite space.
Bai Luo speculated that Sato Ryuseki probably regarded him as another Reincarnator.
Though Bai Luo didn't know what a Vacationer was, judging by the other person's expression, this identity seemed quite similar to that of a Reincarnator.
In this case, while Sato Ryuseki used schemes against the Avengers, he employed straightforward tactics with Bai Luo. Indeed, Bai Luo knew too much about the inner workings of Reincarnators in group battles; it was hard to refuse Sato Ryuseki's proposal.
The reason was simple: as Sato Ryuseki pointed out, Water City had already turned into its current state. There was no need for further control over the situation. For Bai Luo and the Avengers, it was best to minimize losses based on this foundation. Therefore, if the battle between the Buddha Light Team and Hatsune Victory Team could be completed without involving anyone else and then leave, it would undoubtedly be a good choice for SHIELD and the Avengers—though this choice might seem somewhat cowardly compared to confronting these Reincarnators head-on.
Perhaps because of this very reason, in order to win Bai Luo's favor, Sato Ryuseki presented him with this music box and tacitly allowed Loki to hand over the Mind Stone to Bai Luo.
However...
Bai Luo was certain that there were inaccuracies in Sato Ryuseki's "confession" regarding his plans. These inaccuracies could very well become critical points in the upcoming battle.
Of course, Bai Luo wasn't a good person either; he had no intention of simply following whatever suggestions were put forth by others.
After all, for Bai Luo... every Reincarnator represented valuable System reward points!
The speed at which the Reincarnator accumulated points was far faster than the sporadic System tasks that appeared now and then.
Each level was worth three thousand five hundred Old White Rabbit Candy Points, while a B-Rank task was worth twenty thousand.
Therefore, unlike others, Bai Luo was definitely going to "fish in troubled waters." Regardless of what plans Sato Ryuseki and his Hatsune Victory Team had, they would undoubtedly have to be discounted in his presence.
At that moment, as Bai Luo and Lorna moved further away from the nearby apartment, Coulson finally led a group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to meet them.
He approached without any preamble and said, "Fury's directive is—since you all haven't caused a big stir, it would be better to stay hidden for a while longer. We'll arrange a place for you right here in Water City."
Bai Luo nodded; this was also his thought. He replied, "No problem, but I need to report a situation to our director first."
Coulson said, "You should definitely report it."
