Chapter Eighty-Two: My Adventure with Captain America
Steve Rogers felt that something was off.
Although he had never been to Silent Ridge and had not seen anything firsthand, he had read enough about it to know that it resembled a setting straight out of a horror film. After listening to the old man's "prelude" and experiencing the tomb-raiding plot twists, he felt an overwhelming pressure from the unknown. As they drove along, everything seemed right—the dark moonlit night, the desolate forest, the chirping cicadas shrouded in mist, coupled with tales of ghosts. The atmosphere was thick with terror.
But ever since this guy next to him started humming a tune, everything changed.
The mist remained, and the horror atmosphere persisted, but with the shift in soundtrack, it felt entirely different. Most importantly... what on earth was this guy singing?
Was this what they called being tone-deaf?
Rogers was quite frustrated, his face darkening.
Bai Luo hummed a medley of songs, ranging from nursery rhymes to patriotic anthems, singing whatever came to mind as he strolled into the woods.
To be honest, Bai Luo wasn't particularly nervous.
For one thing, he had two trustworthy Vengeful Spirits hanging around him, and beside him was Captain America, a robust figure radiating vitality. If anything were to happen, he certainly wouldn’t be the first to go; so why should he feel anxious?
He turned his head and noticed Steve's expression, finding it rather odd. "Captain, why does your face look like liver? What's wrong?"
Steve chuckled. He was Captain America after all—honest and upright. Although he genuinely wanted to comment on Bai Luo's musical talent—or lack thereof—he didn't want to discourage him. So he simply said, "Let’s keep moving forward. Once we reach the lowest point, we should be able to see that building in the woods."
Clearly, poor Captain America had no idea that for someone like Bai Luo, such concerns were completely absent.
Bai Luo didn’t pay much attention to Captain America. To him, given Steve's character, it would be strange if he were actually frightened by this environment.
While Bai Luo didn't have extensive knowledge about Silent Ridge, he understood that it consisted of two layers—an outer and an inner one—each possessing its own unique power. So how could such a "world" be taken away by a spaceship?
Of course, while he had his doubts, his pace didn’t slow down at all as he continued forward through the forest.
This area of woodland seemed to have been left to grow wild since its establishment; it hadn’t been maintained much. The trees weren't particularly tall or sturdy, but there was an abundance of weeds and shrubs. Given that this place used to be a town of considerable size, it would take some time to walk from its outskirts to the very center.
Fortunately, this was a sloped area, and the location they wanted to reach was in the center, so they only needed to confirm one direction and continue downhill.
Bai Luo and Rogers walked ahead, engaging in conversation along the way.
Of course, the main topic was about asking questions. Bai Luo had returned to his home country for some time and was not very clear about the situation here. It was a good opportunity to ask Captain America.
First of all, Hulk was missing.
The last time Hulk was at the hospital, Bai Luo had intervened just in time to stop him, but that didn’t mean that Dr. Bruce Banner’s condition was stable. In fact, during the time he was under military control, he had been anxious and restless. It was understandable that he would transform with even a slight provocation. Given Hulk's abilities, if he simply wanted to escape while Captain America, Bai Luo, and Iron Man were all absent, it wouldn’t be easy to stop him.
Thus, both Hulk and Bruce Banner had gone missing.
At the same time, Nick Fury began investigating and identifying individuals referred to as "Reincarnators." Of course, he didn’t know this term; they called them "Strange People" and initiated an investigation. Even Natasha had returned to participate in the inquiry.
As for the term "Strange People," Bai Luo sincerely found it quite annoying.
Regarding Lorna... this Polaris Sister had returned to Mutant School long before Bai Luo went to China. During this period, there had been a conversation between Bai Luo and Charles. The Bald Boss had sternly insisted that Bai Luo allow Lorna to return to her studies and complete her education as a mutant.
In countless dimensions across various worlds, there was always room for learning.
Beyond that was Magneto, a significant figure among mutants who was once again gathering his forces, intending to fight for mutant rights and status in contemporary society—of course, it was well-known that his idea of mutant rights meant mutants ruling the world.
The consequence of his ideology was that—following several terrorist attacks, whether successful or not—he once again became a target wanted by the entire world.
Naturally, Lao Wan wouldn’t care about being wanted.
Aside from that, there was Tony Stark. He had always been a prominent figure, and after revealing his identity as Iron Man, he became even more famous; global news media were reporting on him extensively.
And speaking of reports, one could not forget Elena, who had been following Bai Luo for some time. After Bai Luo exposed himself while chasing Hulk at the hospital, he conveyed his intention through Coulson in Washington—his exclusive interview would be given to Elena, but it might take some time for that reporter lady to wait.
Bai Luo chatted casually with Steve as they continued on their way until they reached the lowest point of the pit and saw what the old man referred to as "the building."
Bai Luo couldn't help but pause when he saw the building, muttering, "Is that really just a building?"
Before him and Steve stood a twisted expanse of structures, perhaps three in total, their surfaces covered in blood-red ivy. The shadows of the surrounding trees danced in the moonlight like ghostly figures. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that these three buildings were interconnected; it could be argued that they formed a single structure.
However, Steve then asked seriously, "Does this building serve as a hospital?"
At the mention of this, Bai Luo looked closely and noticed the hospital sign on the dilapidated building. At that moment, he realized that after all these years, this structure had evidently undergone changes since the events of the past.
It was certainly astonishing for a fixed building to change without human intervention in ordinary places, but here, it felt almost normal.
Yet as Bai Luo gazed at the decayed hospital sign, his thoughts drifted to the haunting memories of the nurses from Silent Ridge.
In response to Captain America's confusion, Bai Luo smiled and replied, "What are the odds that we actually wandered into the wrong set?"
