Chapter Seventy-Seven: The Temptation of Hydra
Ignoring the suspicious look from Pierce, Bai Luo casually handed over the freshly cut apple that Lorna had prepared, smiling as he said, "Come on, eat an apple."
Pierce shook his head and replied, "You're the patient; you should eat. Since that's the case, I have a few personal questions I'd like to ask you."
Bai Luo took a bite of the apple and said with a grin, "I'm here to answer any questions. I will cooperate with the organization's work. Twenty years ago, I was already a Young Pioneer—but as for that Hydra assassin, I truly don't remember. Perhaps he was mistakenly killed during the chaos in the hospital back then?"
"That’s possible. You don’t need to worry; S.H.I.E.L.D. will conduct a thorough investigation into this matter. Your safety will be guaranteed by us," Pierce said, his forehead creased with frustration. "What I want to ask is, on the day of the battle in New York City, which was yesterday, did you see Emil Blonsky at night?"
Bai Luo replied, "Yes."
There was nothing to hide; there was no need for concealment. When Bai Luo met Emil Blonsky, he had not avoided anyone and had approached him openly.
Pierce nodded slightly and continued, "Do you know that Emil Blonsky injected himself with Hulk's blood serum that night and transformed into 'Abomination'—that’s what we named him?"
Bai Luo said, "At that time, I was probably in the skies above New York City fighting against those terrorists who appeared out of nowhere."
Pierce glanced at him and leaned in slightly. "Mr. Bai Luo, our conversation isn't being recorded; the two cameras in this room can only capture images. You can tell me the truth."
Bai Luo responded, "What I'm saying is the truth. He turned into a monster; what does that have to do with me?"
"According to our recent investigations, he was a former KGB agent. We have reason to believe he altered his identity to get close to General Ross and even transformed himself into a monster for a reason. It's possible he has already defected to Hydra to serve a more terrifying agenda of terrorism. After the core battle in New York City concluded, he disappeared immediately afterward. We have more reason to confirm that his actions were organized and premeditated." Pierce paused briefly before continuing without taking a breath. "The last person he saw before becoming a monster was you—Bai Luo. We want to know what happened between you two and whether your subsequent assassination attempt in the hospital is related."
Bai Luo stared at Pierce, narrowing his eyes slightly.
Being questioned by a high-ranking Hydra spy about his connection to an event related to Hydra felt absurd to Bai Luo.
"I’m afraid I can't clarify that," Bai Luo said cautiously. "But if Mr. Pierce wants to find out whether Emil Blonsky has any ties to Hydra, there might be someone more suitable than me."
Pierce adjusted his glasses slightly and asked, "Who?"
Bai Luo took another bite of his apple and simply stared at Pierce with a smile, remaining silent.
Pierce's expression changed slightly as he asked, "What do you mean by that?"
It was clear that Pierce had realized Bai Luo was hinting at something.
Bai Luo followed up with a smile, "I'm just being casual—but I have a question for you, Mr. Pierce. When you came here to ask me about Mr. Emil Blonsky, what exactly are you hoping to learn from me?"
This statement from Bai Luo was double-edged; it not only hinted at something deeper but also directly questioned what Hydra wanted to gain from him.
Previously, Hydra had sent someone to kill him in the operating room, and now they had sent this Mr. Pierce to probe him, indicating a shift in their decision-making.
Both of them were speaking plainly, yet the true intentions behind their words were shrouded in secrecy. Pierce was testing Bai Luo's motives, while Bai Luo maintained a high level of aggression from the start, pressing the other party with his remarks.
Faced with Bai Luo's words, Pierce had only two choices: either lay his cards on the table or continue playing games.
Upon hearing Bai Luo's question, Pierce's expression indeed changed several times. After a moment of silence, he replied, "Of course, I'm just following protocol. Fury has been swamped lately, so it falls to an old-timer like me to handle some matters. Please don’t misunderstand, Mr. Bai."
Bai Luo thought this guy might finally reveal his hand, which left him somewhat disappointed. He sighed and slumped back into a state of indifference, leaving half-eaten apple untouched. "How could there be any misunderstanding? We're all S.H.I.E.L.D. agents here; you're my senior after all. I’ll have to consult you properly in the future."
Pierce awkwardly smiled, stood up, and said, "You worked hard during the New York incident. That’s all my questions for now; I won’t disturb you any longer."
"Take care," Bai Luo said dismissively as he watched Mr. Pierce leave. Lying on the bed for a while, he contemplated the purpose behind Hydra's actions.
Although the New York Incident was instigated by Hulk and the Reincarnator, Hydra's shadow loomed over it all. They had never appeared directly but were undoubtedly a significant disruptor in the events. They must have gained something from it and accomplished certain objectives.
If Red Skull had learned to endure, then Hydra in this world would only grow stronger.
What did Hydra want to obtain from him?
Bai Luo didn’t know.
At least from the current situation, he realized he possessed too little information to make any deductions.
Bai Luo lay on the bed for a while, and soon his door was pushed open again.
This time, it was a doctor who entered, followed closely by Lorna. The doctor was not the future Doctor Strange; after all, Strange was a young medical talent renowned in the academic world. It was already quite generous of him to perform Bai Luo's surgery, and he couldn't be expected to monitor Bai Luo's condition continuously—there wasn't much about Bai Luo's condition that required ongoing attention anyway.
As it turned out, the doctor conducted a brief examination, asked some questions that seemed almost pointless to Bai Luo, and then declared that he was recovering quite well.
Lorna stood by with her arms crossed, watching. When the doctor left, she followed him out without saying another word to Bai Luo.
Bai Luo couldn't help but feel a bit frustrated.
He wanted to chat with Sadako, but she ignored him. Mizumura Memeko, who usually rambled on about nonsense, was now in a state of dormancy. Bai Luo found himself feeling rather bored for a moment.
Fortunately, before long, another unexpected visitor arrived.
