Chapter Seventy-Six: The Arrival of Pierce
Lorna nodded slightly and said, "Doctor Strange, your right hand is severely fractured, but you don't have any other serious injuries. At most, you have some scrapes and soft tissue damage. Just take a few days to rest—of course, if you want to get up now, that's fine too."
Bai Luo nodded; this was pretty much in line with the injuries he had anticipated. The Iron Body Talisman was indeed reliable. He checked briefly and found that the talisman he had applied to himself had not been tampered with.
Then he called out in his mind to Sadako and Mizumura Memeko.
Sadako responded immediately, saying, "Don't worry, I'm on shift now, so there shouldn't be any problems."
"Shift?"
Bai Luo was somewhat surprised by this term.
Sadako explained, "That Daoist's power is particularly aimed at me and Memeko. Although he didn't do anything here, it still affected us to some extent. We both feel quite weak and need to recover. My condition is worse than Memeko's, but at that time, things seemed stable. I thought nothing else would happen, so I entered a state of dormancy to recover first. However, it seems something did happen during that time; someone tried to kill you and was killed in turn by Mizumura Memeko."
Bai Luo was taken aback.
Who would try to attack him?
He couldn't help but glance at Lorna beside him, realizing that what she said wasn't entirely truthful. She was here primarily for her own safety.
Bai Luo turned back to Lorna and stared at her for a moment before saying thoughtfully, "Regardless of everything, thank you, Lorna."
Lorna couldn't help but be slightly stunned. She opened her mouth and finally just huffed in response, "If it weren't for that Blacklight keeping me here, I would rather stay in that dark room."
Lorna stood up, her long, slender legs striding directly to the door as she pushed it open and walked out.
Bai Luo let out a slight sigh, but Sadako fell silent once again. He could tell that Sadako was not in a good state either; the last moment when the Reincarnator burst forth in golden light must have been extremely suppressive for spirits. It was unclear whether the Reincarnator had done it intentionally or if it was just a lucky coincidence.
However, from the surrounding environment, Bai Luo could sense that something had indeed happened.
His hospital room was a single unit, with surveillance cameras in each corner and only one window. Most importantly, there were no flowers or anything of the sort in his room.
Regardless, it would have been appropriate for Nick to bring some flowers or something similar.
Moreover, he couldn't tell whether the soundproofing of this room was exceptionally good or what, but he hadn't heard a single sound from outside. Even when Lorna opened the door to leave, the corridor outside remained eerily quiet. The angle of sunlight streaming through the window and curtains suggested that he was on a relatively high floor.
Thus, this situation indicated two possibilities: first, he was being protected; second, he was being controlled.
Given that Lorna was the first person Bai Luo saw upon waking up, the former possibility seemed more likely. Although their relationship had always been delicate, others were unaware of it. Lorna's presence here was clearly arranged by Fury to ensure Bai Luo felt at ease as soon as he regained consciousness.
Just as Bai Luo's thoughts wandered, the door to his hospital room was pushed open once more.
Entering was a middle-aged man who looked somewhat familiar to Bai Luo.
The man was slightly shorter, with hints of gray in his hair and wearing black-framed glasses. He exuded an indescribable aura of a refined politician. He gently closed the door and approached Bai Luo's bedside, pulling up the chair where Lorna had sat earlier. With a smile, he introduced himself: "I am Alexander—Alexander Pierce."
Upon hearing this name, Bai Luo finally recalled who this familiar figure was.
Alexander Pierce.
The former director of S.H.I.E.L.D., but at the same time, he was also a high-ranking spy planted by Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D., and ultimately the main antagonist in the Captain America movie storyline.
Seeing the person suddenly run out, Bai Luo was somewhat surprised.
Bai Luo raised a hand and said, "Bai Luo."
"I know, I came by before, but you weren't awake then," Pierce replied casually, engaging in small talk before taking a seat. "I'm here today mainly to ask you a few questions."
At that moment, the door to the hospital room was pushed open again, and Lorna, who had just stepped out, returned at some point.
She entered holding a fruit knife in one hand and a bright red apple in the other. Upon seeing Pierce, her expression showed little surprise. She lingered for a moment on the chair beneath Pierce but ultimately did nothing more than lean against the wall by the door. Her fingers danced as she used her ability to control the fruit knife, swiftly slicing the apple.
Pierce fell silent, turning his gaze to Lorna's apple and knife. After watching for a while, he shifted his attention back to Bai Luo.
Bai Luo cleared his throat. He understood perfectly why Lorna was there peeling an apple; he felt quite touched. However, after thinking for a moment, he said, "Um, my fiancée here is Mr. Pierce from S.H.I.E.L.D., and he wants to ask me some questions..."
As expected, nothing worked as effectively as mentioning "fiancée."
Lorna, who had seemed entirely focused on the apple moments ago, abruptly lifted her head and shot Bai Luo a fierce glare. The fruit knife flew through the air and plunged into the already peeled apple, which she then presented to Bai Luo before storming out.
Bai Luo held the fruit knife and took the apple down. Turning around, he caught sight of Pierce's amused expression.
Bai Luo immediately cleared his throat and asked, "What happened?"
Hearing Bai Luo's question, Pierce seemed somewhat surprised. "You don't know?"
"Um..." Bai Luo indeed felt a bit confused.
Pierce continued, "During the surgery, a Hydra spy attempted to attack you—but he failed and died on the spot in the operating room. We suspect that his death might have been caused by you."
"Bai Luoxin said, 'Not only was I completely anesthetized, but I also slept like a dead pig. If I could still jump up and kill someone, I would be a god.'
The person collapsed on the spot, clearly due to Mizumura Memeko's influence.
But is Bai Luo the kind of person who speaks the truth?
Of course.
Bai Luo smiled and said, 'How could that be? The people in the operating room know exactly what state I was in. And to be honest with you, if it weren't for you and this situation, I might not even know that I was once assassinated.'
Bai Luo... was indeed speaking the truth.
However, as Bai Luo looked at the person before him, Pierce seemed to doubt him, his gaze filled with skepticism as if he couldn't believe Bai Luo's words."
