Chapter 35: Sadako's Strategy
Bai Luo discovered that his "state of existence" within Sadako's memories had once again changed. Previously, he existed as a complete observer, able to see others while remaining unseen by them. Now, while others still could not see him, Sadako was able to perceive him.
This change was likely closely related to Sadako's growth.
As Sadako matured, her abilities became stronger. As someone brought into her memories, Bai Luo's "realness" within Sadako's mind naturally increased. Perhaps for the same reason, only Sadako could see his presence.
However, this provided Bai Luo with a significant opportunity.
He could use this chance to alter Sadako's predetermined life trajectory.
Although Bai Luo could not change the people and events in Sadako's memories, being able to converse with her was enough.
To change a person does not necessarily require altering their established life experiences.
Bai Luo was doing his best to become Sadako's friend, aiming to help her escape the current state of being feared and despised by others. After all, he had already determined that for the time being, he could not leave Sadako's memories; it would be better to resolve her issues first.
After the incident at the seaside, Ikuuma Heihachirou once again moved with Sadako. However, during the move, Bai Luo did not see Sadako and was unaware of how Ikuuma Heihachirou took her away.
Yet Bai Luo understood that the root of Sadako's misfortune stemmed from another version of herself. She was locked away by Ikuuma Heihachirou and grew jealous of the new life that allowed her to leave home and experience normalcy. This long-standing jealousy would inevitably turn into hatred, meaning that everyone who appeared around Sadako would not have a good ending—a fact that even Bai Luo could not change.
What he could do was simply befriend Sadako, accompanying her growth as an adult and helping her carefully hide her uniqueness and abilities.
Sadako's attitude towards Bai Luo gradually changed as they spent more time together. Having never had any true friends before, she began to see Bai Luo as an indispensable companion in her life.
To her, Bai Luo was like a treasure trove; he always knew many fascinating things.
Time flew by like a fleeting shadow. There were no significant changes in Sadako's life trajectory; she transformed from an innocent child into a beautiful young woman with flowing hair. However, perhaps due to having Bai Luo as a "friend," this version of Sadako lacked the overwhelming insecurity seen in the films. Yet her aspirations remained unchanged—she still wanted to join a theater troupe.
This was the beginning of Sadako's fateful turning point.
From this moment on, Bai Luo gradually became silent.
He had accompanied Sadako for nearly twenty years, and it was time for him to step back. From this moment on, he no longer spoke, simply waiting quietly for everything to unfold. Bai Luo understood that no matter how real everything he witnessed seemed, it was merely Sadako's dream. Even if he intervened and changed the course of events, it would ultimately be meaningless.
Everything unfolded according to the plot of the movie in Bai Luo's memory. After Sadako joined the theater troupe, people within it began to die one by one. A female journalist investigating supernatural events also came knocking, following numerous clues to purposefully investigate Sadako and her past.
Yuan Shan Bo began to approach Sadako as well; he was the only one in the entire troupe who held any affection for her. However, perhaps due to spending more time with Bai Luo, she seemed closer to him. When the first death occurred in the troupe, she expressed her concern to Bai Luo, saying, "Is it because of me that someone has died?"
But the situation continued to worsen. As the journalist delved deeper into her investigation, Sadako's past was gradually unearthed. Meanwhile, the director of the troupe persistently subjected Sadako to obvious sexual innuendos—Sadako was indeed a stunning beauty; her skin appeared extremely pale in her Vengeful Spirit state, which had its own kind of allure, while now she exuded a slightly delicate beauty.
Sadako's appearances became increasingly frequent; Bai Luo saw her several times. In the original plot of the film, Ikuuma Heihachirou continuously suppressed Sadako's growth with drugs. Throughout the film, there were no genuine positive portrayals of Sadako. To Bai Luo's eyes, this Sadako might have died long ago; it was precisely because of this that her ghost wandered freely and could kill without restraint alongside Shan Village Sadako.
Bai Luo always felt that this Sadako had sensed his presence early on.
As days passed, although Bai Luo significantly altered Shan Village Sadako's original personality, it did not mean he could change the outcome depicted in his memories.
Finally, on the day of the performance, Sadako erupted. Under the leadership of the female journalist, the people in the troupe killed Sadako.
Sadako fell to the ground covered in blood, reaching out toward a place invisible to everyone. Everyone thought she had lost her mind, but only Bai Luo understood that Sadako was reaching out to him—someone invisible to all.
She hoped he could help her.
However, at that moment, Bai Luo felt powerless; this was not the real world but merely a memory.
The female journalist rushed up from behind with a stick and cleanly plunged Sadako into eternal darkness.
What Bai Luo saw in that instant was Sadako's gaze filled with despair and anguish.
As the world of Sadako descended into darkness, Bai Luo's perspective as an observer also vanished at that moment, plunging back into a void.
Despite this, Bai Luo understood that according to the original plot of the film, the group of reporters who killed Sadako took her body back to her home, intending to eliminate her once and for all. However, they were unaware that Sadako had merged with the true essence of Sadako, unleashing her supernatural powers. The female reporter and the entire theater troupe met untimely ends. Afterward, Ikuuma Heihachirou, realizing the gravity of the situation, finally made a resolute decision. In a moment when Sadako was completely defenseless, he injected her with the flower virus and personally sent his daughter into the well.
When Bai Luo regained her vision, she witnessed the scene where Ikuuma Heihachirou injected Sadako with the flower virus.
Believing herself to have survived a catastrophe, Sadako struggled to return to her home. She no longer remembered that she was already dead, but her emotions were nearly shattered. On this day, everyone around her wanted to kill her, viewing her as a demon—was there anything more terrifying for a kind girl born in such an era?
Upon returning home, she immediately threw herself into her father's embrace, yearning for the warmth and peace of family.
However, she could never have imagined that Ikuuma Heihachirou had long since resolved to kill her.
Thus, this embrace between Ikuuma Heihachirou and Sadako was both a familial hug and a cruel betrayal from one’s own kin.
