Chapter 28: The Invitation from Nick Fury
Bai Luo's eyes brightened slightly upon seeing the object. He reached out his hand and pulled it away from Nick, but instead of signing it, he folded it into a square and tucked it into his clothing.
Nick was taken aback. "What are you doing?"
Bai Luo replied, "This is so sudden; I need to think about it, right? This is about becoming an agent, risking my life. But you're a director; you can't just wait around for me to change my mind, can you? So, look, I'm taking this for now. If I decide to join S.H.I.E.L.D. later, I'll sign it myself. That way, it's convenient. And if I absolutely don't want to join S.H.I.E.L.D., you can rest assured that I'll burn it to ashes so it won't fall into anyone else's hands."
Nick's mouth twitched slightly as he looked at the kid. He opened his mouth but ultimately had nothing to say. It was clear that today, he wouldn't be able to get Bai Luo to follow him. He didn't mind; good things take time. Nick Fury was much older than he appeared, and he was willing to wait. He even joked, "You really should take some time to think about it; otherwise, I might get sued for hiring child labor."
"However," Nick shifted the topic, "do you know where those people who suddenly appeared in Kansas City came from?"
Bai Luo countered, "Do you think I should know their origins?"
Nick sat firmly on someone else's sofa, staring at Bai Luo for a moment. Both he and Charles suspected that Bai Luo might have some insight into the origins of these reincarnators. After all, he was the first to step in and resolve the situation when the Reincarnator made a bold appearance. Although Bai Luo seemed only nine and a half years old, everyone who interacted with him noted his mature mindset that belied his appearance; it wouldn't be surprising if he knew something.
Fury continued to watch Bai Luo for a while longer but ultimately said nothing more.
The brief conversation came to an end as Nick was eager to capture the other Reincarnator quickly.
As they left the ordinary home, Elena and her parents emerged from inside, standing in the room and watching them from afar. The moment Bai Luo stepped out of the house, Elena couldn't hold back any longer and shouted, "You're the one who defeated the bad guy last night, right?"
In response to her question, Bai Luo simply smiled.
Elena appeared very excited; she tugged at her parents' hands, shaking them left and right while her handsome parents looked on in disbelief.
As Nick Fury and Bai Luo walked out, another S.H.I.E.L.D. agent entered to handle subsequent matters.
A black sedan had already arrived and was parked at Elena's apartment entrance. Bai Luo and Nick got into the car, which then drove off.
In just one night, Kansas City returned to normal, though there were noticeably more police cars on the streets.
Nick Fury and his team drove towards the outskirts of Kansas City, where the Reincarnator was located in an abandoned building. The area had already been secured, but as Bai Luo had anticipated, Nick Fury took control of everything upon arrival with the authority of S.H.I.E.L.D. They had not yet gathered their forces, and the Reincarnator remained inactive.
According to Nick Fury's plan, after picking up Bai Luo, they would use him as the main force to forcibly capture the Reincarnator with the support of his team.
However, Bai Luo was undoubtedly a variable.
As he approached the vicinity of the dilapidated building, Mizumura Memeko confirmed in his mind that the werewolf was indeed inside the five-story abandoned house, sleeping.
Bai Luo wasted no time and instructed Mizumura Memeko to make a "call."
This "call" referred to the communication device on the Reincarnator, which connected almost instantly. Bai Luo didn't need a phone; he could communicate directly with the Reincarnator.
This time, he didn’t have Mizumura Memeko issue a "death warning" but simply established a long-distance connection.
The Reincarnator on the other end was clearly shocked, not expecting anyone to contact him through internal channels after all his companions had perished.
"Who are you?"
To Bai Luo's surprise, the Reincarnator turned out to be a woman—at that moment, she appeared in her human form, and her voice sounded relatively normal.
Only Bai Luo and Mizumura Memeko could hear her words.
Bai Luo did not respond; he remained silent while Nick Fury beside him felt no sense of abnormality. Their vehicle stopped not far from the abandoned building.
After a long silence, the Reincarnator finally reacted. She let out a low growl like that of a beast and hissed, "What are you?!"
Immediately after, there was a sound of the communication device being crushed. At that same moment, from a nearby floor of the abandoned building, a gray figure leaped from the third floor and dashed towards the outskirts of Kansas City.
That was indeed the Reincarnator. It seemed she was terrified; upon realizing that Bai Luo might be closing in on her, she broke through the building at once and prepared to flee.
Nick Fury, who had just stepped off the vehicle to issue orders for securing the battlefield, was taken aback. Suddenly, he heard a rush of wind and turned around to see Bai Luo darting away like lightning, with a voice echoing back, "Don't let your people fire recklessly."
This was Nick Fury's first time witnessing Bai Luo in action. The speed displayed at that moment was enough to leave the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. astonished.
Meanwhile, Bai Luo had already dashed out like a bolt of lightning.
The Reincarnator had fully "transformed," its ash-gray body standing out prominently on the ground. The massive figure moved with surprising agility, keeping pace with Bai Luo.
This werewolf's physical abilities were not inferior to Bai Luo's.
However, Bai Luo was well-prepared. He swiftly threw a True Fire Talisman worth five hundred points from behind. A flash of fire erupted, but Bai Luo's aim was slightly off; the talisman grazed the creature's body before landing on the ground. Nevertheless, upon impact, the talisman ignited into a blazing inferno. Although it didn't hit the monster directly, the explosive flames engulfed it in an instant.
The werewolf let out a piercing howl as its massive form came to a halt.
