Chapter Twenty-Six: You Are Being Watched
At the moment when Bai Luo was busy conning his way into free food and lodging, in another corner of Kansas City, Logan had come to a halt in the alley, shrouded in shadows.
At the end of the alley stood a tall woman, though it was unclear when she had arrived.
She did not speak, yet her voice resonated within Logan's heart: "I want to talk to you, Logan."
Logan leaned against the wall. To be honest, he was not in a good mood. He had let Bai Luo take the fall for him for half the night, and when the police showed up, he had no choice but to leave. Now he had no idea where that guy had run off to, which only added to his frustration.
Of course, Bai Luo didn't genuinely intend to betray him; he simply hadn't been able to find Logan. The two of them had gotten separated in the vastness of Kansas City.
Logan took a step forward.
As he approached, the figure became clearer.
It was a tall woman—Qin Grey.
Her expression was also grim; no one had anticipated Scott's death.
Looking at Logan before her, Qin spoke in a low voice: "Relax, Logan. I’m a mutant too. My ability is psychic in nature. I mean no harm; I just want to know who those people are—those who possess immense power yet aren’t even mutants. And what about that child… who exactly is he?"
…
…
Meanwhile, in the guest room of Elena's house, Sadako finally broke the long silence. She asked Bai Luo telepathically, "Who are those people?"
That was not an easy question to answer. Bai Luo thought for a moment and replied, "They are from another world, and they want to kill certain people in our world or cause greater harm and destruction."
"So... you killed them?"
Bai Luo nodded. He wanted something, perhaps an explanation or something else, but after thinking it over, he found himself at a loss for words.
Sadako, on the other hand, fell into a long silence.
Bai Luo didn't mind much. Unlike Mizumura Memeko, Sadako was more cautious of people despite her amnesia. Bai Luo understood that gaining Sadako's trust wouldn't happen overnight.
Having spent the entire day in turmoil, Bai Luo removed all the talismans from his body and exchanged one for an Item Storage Talisman to store his belongings. After examining the two pistols he had acquired as trophies, he finally closed his eyes and drifted into sleep.
However, it felt like he had just fallen asleep when he "opened" his eyes again in a dream, only to see a shiny bald head.
It was Charles Xavier, the Professor.
Once again, Charles directly engaged in a "mental connection" with Bai Luo without any greeting.
This time, the scene had changed dramatically; they seemed to be in the Mutant School in New York on a sunny afternoon. Charles sat in his wheelchair, smiling at Bai Luo, his bald head gleaming in the sunlight.
Bai Luo forced a smile.
Charles's expression was serious today. He looked at Bai Luo and said, "I want to thank you for stopping Magneto and those strange individuals who appeared out of nowhere."
Bai Luo replied, "Scott is dead."
Charles's face fell with sorrow. "He was a good mutant. I had hoped to train him as my successor."
Bai Luo said, "I'm very sorry."
Although Bai Luo didn't have a deep impression of Laser Eye, he was indeed a decent person. However, no one had anticipated the arrival of the Reincarnator, nor could anyone foresee Scott's death.
Charles slowly shook his head. He felt sad, but at this moment, finding Bai Luo was not about expressing his emotions; he had no need to confide in Bai Luo. "Who are they, really? I've never seen or heard of people like them... and from what I know, their target seems to be me."
When the Reincarnator team first appeared, their leader, the Forgiving Color Reincarnator, announced through the television to all of America that he wanted Charles and the Cosmic Cube.
Bai Luo speculated that Charles might be the mission target for this team, while the Cosmic Cube was likely the benefit they hoped to gain in this world.
However, Bai Luo hesitated.
At this moment, the answer to Charles's question directly involved Bai Luo.
Charles clearly misunderstood Bai Luo's hesitation. Seeing Bai Luo remain silent, he said, "It seems you’re not clear about where these people came from either."
Since Charles had brought it up, Bai Luo nodded in agreement. "But I'm currently hunting them down; one of them managed to escape and should be in Kansas City now."
His words were clear: he hoped Charles would use his abilities to help locate that Werewolf Reincarnator.
Charles understood the implication behind Bai Luo's words but did not respond immediately. Instead, he sighed and said, "The last time we met, I thought you were an inexperienced child, but it seems you are much more mature than I imagined."
Bai Luo smiled. How could one accurately gauge a time traveler’s behavior based solely on their outward age?
The professor continued, "Sometimes I even wish you were truly a mutant."
After expressing this sentiment, he did not wait for Bai Luo's reply and shifted the topic directly. He mentioned a location in Kansas City. "She seems able to transform between human form and a wolf-like state; that's why you lost track of her."
Bai Luo realized he had overlooked this detail. He hadn’t expected a D-Class Reincarnator to possess such a moderately strong Bloodline.
He took a deep breath and said, "In that case, thank you, Professor."
Charles nodded. "Qin Grey is in that city; she is my friend and one of the X-Men. If you need help, you can find her."
Qin Grey.
She is also an important character in the X-Men storyline.
However, Bai Luo does not plan to deal with her so soon.
Charles finally revealed a hint of a smile, a gentle and kind smile. He looked at Bai Luo and said, "If there is a chance, I hope to meet you in person. Perhaps we could become friends."
Bai Luo replied, "Aren't we already?"
Charles smiled, and it seemed he wanted to end the conversation. The virtual world around them gradually faded at that moment, and just before everything disappeared, Charles suddenly seemed to remember something and said, "S.H.I.E.L.D... S.H.I.E.L.D. is looking for you."
This was the last sentence of Charles's conversation with Bai Luo. The sunny world then vanished, and Bai Luo's consciousness slipped into a true state of sleep.
