Chapter Nine: I Am Here to Propose
Kansas City is one of the largest cities in Missouri, bustling with activity and home to nearly four hundred thousand residents.
Mystique had arranged for someone to take Bai Luo to Charles's school. Although Mystique couldn't be considered a good person, she wasn't a bad one either. In matters concerning mutants, Bai Luo could still trust her.
At that moment, Magneto was in a mutant's residence within the city.
Finding him wasn't difficult. After entering the city with Bai Luo, Mystique changed her appearance into that of an elderly white woman, resembling a mother visiting wealthy relatives in town with her child.
With Mystique leading the way, locating Magneto was straightforward; he was eager to meet any mutants or potential mutants.
At that moment, he was recruiting for his organization.
At the entrance, Bai Luo encountered Toad, one of Magneto's subordinates, who squatted on the steps with a leering gaze as he watched Bai Luo and Mystique enter the residence.
Magneto awaited Bai Luo in his study on the second floor.
Though not bald, he appeared older than Charles, likely due to his head of silver hair. However, like Charles, Magneto was quite handsome—more so than in the movies—and undoubtedly had captivated countless young women in his youth.
Magneto narrowed his eyes slightly and scrutinized Bai Luo with interest. "A nine-year-old child specifically asking to see me?"
Bai Luo smiled. He knew that at his current age, any mature expression would seem amusing, so he simply replied, "That's right. I'm here to see you; even Charles couldn't stop me."
Magneto raised an eyebrow in surprise. "Charles?"
"The professor clearly thought that once I met you, you'd recruit me to your side."
"You found me but don't wish to help me revitalize mutants. Are you here to persuade me to 'turn over a new leaf' like those self-righteous mutants of Charles's?" Magneto's smile held a hint of danger.
Is Magneto a villain? No, probably not; is he a hero? Likely not either.
He is a character who straddles the line between good and evil, possessing his own principles and boundaries. What he does is, in some sense, similar to what Charles aims for: both seek to change the status of mutants in today's society, albeit through vastly different means.
Bai Luo had already made plans. He once again revealed that infuriatingly mischievous smile and said, "No, I'm not here to help you, nor am I here to persuade you to 'turn over a new leaf.' I'm here to propose."
At these words, Magneto was genuinely taken aback. He exclaimed, "What?"
"In short, I want to marry one of your daughters—Lorna Dane—a cute girl who is, by the calendar, much younger than me."
As Bai Luo calmly stated this, Magneto could no longer maintain his composure. The man known as one of the strongest mutants widened his eyes slightly and repeated, "What? My daughter…"
Magneto displayed a look of shock as if he couldn't believe he had a daughter.
"She possesses the same ability as you—the power to control magnetic fields," Bai Luo said nonchalantly. "You might not remember her, and she certainly doesn't remember you because her powers should not have awakened yet. In fact, she is even younger than I am, but her situation is quite dire."
Magneto narrowed his eyes dangerously and asked sharply, "How do you know I have a daughter? How do you even know what her mutant abilities are before they have awakened?"
"The reason is simple," Bai Luo replied. "I am a prophet, a seer. I know many things... about the future that you are unaware of."
Magneto stared at him in silence.
"For example..." Bai Luo snapped his fingers and smiled appropriately. "Your real name is Max Eisenhart. You were born in the late 1920s in a middle-class Jewish family in Germany. Your father was Jacob Eisenhardt, a veteran of World War I. During World War II in 1940, you and your family were sent to the Warsaw Ghetto. Your mother, father, and sister were all killed and buried in a mass grave. You alone survived by chance, but that was not the end of your tragic fate. After escaping the mass grave with great difficulty, you fell into Auschwitz Concentration Camp..."
"You've investigated me?" Magneto's eyes narrowed slightly.
Bai Luo chuckled and said, "You might think I've investigated you, but if you look into it yourself, you'll find that I've never left the town where I was born and had no contact with anyone related to you before meeting Mystique."
Bai Luo had prepared this line well in advance; he had no intention of fighting or any need to engage Magneto physically.
Thus, Bai Luo would take what he needed while leveraging the advantage of being a traveler to create the persona of a "prophet" to intimidate.
Moreover, he didn't need Magneto to truly believe him; just sowing seeds of doubt would suffice. If Magneto did investigate further, the results would only serve to confirm what Bai Luo had said.
Magneto pondered for a moment and asked, "Are you a mutant?"
"My sister is undoubtedly a mutant, but I'm not sure if I am one myself."
Magneto stared at Bai Luo for a moment and asked, "So how successful do you think my plan in Kansas City will be?"
Mystique had not hidden the details of Magneto's operation in Kansas City from Bai Luo. In Mystique's eyes, Bai Luo was just a child who wanted to meet Magneto, and since she would be with him throughout the meeting, there was no need to worry about Bai Luo leaking anything.
Recently, a senator opposed to mutants had arrived in Kansas City, intending to deliver unfavorable remarks about mutants in a public venue. It was said that he would be protected by the latest batch of Sentinel Robots from Tessarak Corporation.
Magneto's target was this senator, heavily guarded as he was. He aimed to demonstrate the uniqueness of mutants through violent means.
Bai Luo processed this series of information in his mind before saying, "No one can stop Magneto from doing what he wants. You will successfully make the world recognize that mutants are stronger than ordinary people, and you will experience that indescribable sense of exhilaration. But Lorna Dane will lose her mother and become an orphan, living in fear for her mutant identity and hiding until she grows up."
These words plunged Magneto into a long silence.
Finally, in the dimly lit room, he spoke in a low voice, "Where is she now?"
