Chapter Three: The Mutant
Bai Chu stepped out early in the morning, beginning her usual routine—attending classes during the day and working part-time at night.
As for Bai Luo, he had been lurking outside the roadside fast-food restaurant where Bai Chu worked since dawn. It was the only fast-food place in their entire town, and he was convinced that this was the "scene of the crime."
This particular restaurant was known for playing a single song on repeat, and that song happened to be "All He Ever Says."
He waited there until evening.
When Bai Chu walked in with her bag, she immediately spotted Bai Luo. Perhaps thinking he had come to see her, she smiled at him.
But soon, her smile faded.
The manager intercepted her directly: "Bai Jie, your brother has been sitting here for a while. He had lunch and dinner, drank seventeen cups and a bottle of ice beer, and you’re the one who has to pay."
Bai Luo flashed her a sweet smile that only a mischievous kid could muster.
As Bai Chu sat down across from him, her beautiful face was clouded with frustration. She looked at Bai Luo and said, "So, skipping class just to come here? What are you up to?"
Bai Luo shrugged casually. "You’re not actually going to pay, are you? He sold me a drink even though I'm a minor. I could just play dead or pretend I had a heart attack..."
"Stop right there." Bai Chu said with an exasperated expression, "Tell me the truth."
Bai Luo cleared his throat twice, slightly adjusting his expression before solemnly stating, "I’m here to save your life."
He noticed a Hunched Woman entering from the front door, who then sat down against the wall on the other side.
Bai Chu's lips twitched, clearly at a loss for words.
Bai Luo smiled and said, "It's not too late to come home with me now."
Bai Chu merely twitched her lips again, evidently ignoring her younger brother's words. Of course, if she could hear him, Bai Luo wouldn't have followed her here in the first place.
However, before Bai Chu could respond further, a loud crash suddenly echoed from the front. The door of the fast-food restaurant was kicked open forcefully, and a group of people rushed in.
Bai Luo narrowed his eyes slightly, his fingertips quietly pinching the Power Talisman he had exchanged for with his last 10 points from his pocket.
Three individuals stormed in, all dressed like Mercenaries and armed to the teeth. The manager approached them, only to be shot dead by the leading man without a second thought.
That gunshot sent the fast-food restaurant into chaos.
It was still dinner time, and there were quite a few people inside.
Some attempted to flee, but with those three blocking the entrance, who could escape?
One person trying to run was shot down immediately by the trio.
The leading man then shouted, "Everyone be quiet! We're here for a mutant. A mutant just escaped in here. We only want her; if you cooperate, you can all live safely."
"Mutants?"
This was the reaction of most people in the restaurant, having never heard of such beings before.
Bai Luoxin was taken aback—there are actually mutants?
With Star-Lord in front and Ghost Call behind, now a mutant had appeared. What on earth was going on?
Bai Luo felt overwhelmed.
The situation with Ghost Call was still unresolved, and now a mutant had emerged.
What the hell! Even if such things were meant to happen, shouldn't they wait until I, as a time traveler, had grown up? I'm only nine and a half years old, and all this chaos is already piling up!
Bai Luo's original plan was quite simple.
Based on the information from the previous Ghost Call, Bai Luo thought that at most there had been a shooting incident at the restaurant where Bai Chu worked—just some reckless thug or drunkard going on a rampage.
Therefore, Bai Luo's plan was to lay low and observe the situation, waiting for the right moment to act.
But… given the current circumstances…
Just as Bai Luo was contemplating changing his plans, his phone suddenly rang.
In the dead silence of the fast-food restaurant, the ringtone sounded exceptionally jarring.
The three individuals almost immediately turned their attention to the table occupied by Bai Luo and Bai Chu. The leader among them changed color and asked, "Who are you calling?"
As he spoke, he walked over, his expression darkening, a gun clenched tightly in his hand, as if he were ready to shoot at any moment.
Bai Chu's face turned pale. She wanted to stand up but was held down by a glance from Bai Luo.
Bai Luo remained surprisingly calm. He took out his phone and placed it on the table, exhaling slowly. "Why don't you listen in too?"
His words were a question, but his actions were decisive as he answered the call. He had already confirmed that this was a "Ghost Call" set to come in three minutes earlier when he pulled out his phone.
The man with the gun stood firm in front of Bai Luo, pointing his weapon directly at him, yet his gaze was fixed on the phone.
The call began with a characteristic silence before a sound emerged from within—a girl's high-pitched laughter. The laughter was extremely eerie, and combined with the oppressive atmosphere at that moment, it became terrifying beyond measure.
The leader's face paled. "You're playing..."
Before he could finish, Bai Luo stood up and said, "I'm not playing with you; the mutant you're looking for is right over there!"
He raised his hand and pointed to the Hunched Woman who had just entered behind Bai Chu.
The three armed individuals in the room changed color simultaneously as they looked toward where Bai Luo was pointing.
In the corner, a woman who had been trying to hide herself suddenly turned pale as well.
But at that very moment, Bai Luo sprang into action.
In that fleeting moment, he had activated the Talisman. He leaped from his spot and charged like a bull at the opponent, taking advantage of their momentary distraction as they turned around.
However, that guy was clearly a professional. Almost instantly, he reacted by throwing a punch, intending to send this brat flying.
But…
He miscalculated.
Bai Luo swiftly reached out and grabbed the man's arm, twisting it with a sharp crack. The once arrogant man's arm broke on the spot, his face turning pale. Without hesitation, Bai Luo delivered a kick to the man's chest, forcing him to double over in agony. Following that, a punch landed squarely on the man's head.
Thus, the man who had just killed two people was knocked unconscious under Bai Luo's fist, collapsing silently to the ground.
At that moment, Bai Chu, sitting nearby, looked at his brother with an expression that could only be described as one of astonishment at a monster.
