A glimmer of light flashed in my eyes, but I feigned surprise. "What could be so important that you need to call them over? Father is busy with work and has to borrow money everywhere after hours. Mother just got back to rest for a bit."
"It's very important," my brother said.
"Fine," I replied reluctantly.
I called my parents.
"Hi, Dad, Mom, Mingming has something to tell you," I said.
"What is it?" Father asked.
"Could you come to the hospital?" I replied.
My parents hurried to the hospital.
When they arrived at the ward and saw my brother lying on the hospital bed, their eyes instantly turned red.
"Let's eat, I made you Pork Rib Soup," Mother said, her voice choked with emotion.
"Thanks, Mom!" my brother comforted her.
Father stood silently beside them, watching quietly.
"Aren't you going to tell us what you wanted to say?" I reminded him.
My brother glanced at me and then said to our parents, "Dad, Mom, He Qingze apologized to me."
“He said it was not intentional and that he is willing to take responsibility.”
“How ridiculous!” Father exclaimed angrily. “It was He Qingze who caused Mingming to get hurt!”
“Where is that kid now?” Mother asked furiously.
“He transferred schools,” my brother said, looking down.
“Transferred?” Father’s expression darkened. “He did this on purpose!”
“Mingming, don’t worry. Your parents will definitely help you seek justice,” Mother said, clenching her fists.
Seeing this, I quickly intervened, “Mom and Dad, please calm down for a moment.”
“If he’s willing to take responsibility, we shouldn’t go too far.”
“Otherwise, Mingming and He Qingze won’t even be able to be friends in the future.”
After hearing my words, my parents reluctantly suppressed their anger.
“What do you suggest we do?” Father asked with a frown.
“I’ll ask Teacher Chen to help contact He Qingze’s parents,” I replied. “We can all sit down and talk things over.”
“Alright, that sounds good,” Father agreed.
I went to find Teacher Chen and explained the situation to him.
“Teacher Chen, now He Qingze's parents are willing to take responsibility, but our two families have not had the chance to meet,” I said earnestly. “Could you help contact He Qingze's parents so that we can sit down and have a good talk?”
Teacher Chen pondered for a moment and replied, “Alright, I will reach out to He Qingze's parents.”
“Thank you, Teacher Chen,” I said gratefully.
I returned to the hospital room and told my brother, “I’ve already spoken with Teacher Chen. He will help you contact He Qingze's parents.”
My brother nodded.
He Qingze's parents quickly responded to Teacher Chen, agreeing to meet for a discussion.
A time was set for the meeting in Teacher Chen's office.
He Qingze's parents were a middle-aged couple, dressed very simply.
He Qingze was the child who had been lingering outside my brother's hospital room.
“You must be Li Ming's parents,” the man politely asked.
“Yes,” Father replied.
“Hello, we are He Qingze's parents,” the man introduced himself. “I am He Dashan, and this is my wife, Liu Yan.”
“Hello,” Father shook their hands.
Seeing that the atmosphere between both parties was harmonious, Teacher Chen wore a satisfied smile.
"Thank you all for coming today; I hope you can have a good discussion," Teacher Chen said. "It's really up to you parents to resolve the children's issues."
"We are truly sorry about Li Ming's injury," He Mother said sincerely. "It's our failure to educate our son properly."
"At least you understand," Mother replied coldly.
He Mother's expression changed slightly, as if she wanted to say something, but ultimately held back.
"However, we can't place all the blame on He Qingze," Teacher Chen continued. "From what I understand, it was indeed an accident."
"Well, they're just kids; they can't always distinguish right from wrong," Father added.
"Regardless, our Mingming is innocent," Mother said passionately. "He is currently lying in the hospital, and we don't know when he will recover."
"We will cover your medical expenses," He Qingze suddenly spoke up.
Everyone's gaze turned to him.
"Qingze..." He Mother looked at him in surprise.
"Parents, this incident was caused by me," He Qingze said earnestly. "I should take responsibility."
"Don't worry, once I start working, I will pay you back, Uncle and Aunt."
He Mother's eyes grew complicated.
"You..." She opened her mouth as if to say something but ultimately just sighed.
"Alright," Mother said apologetically, "we are willing to compensate."
Finally, both parties reached an agreement, and the first payment of thirty thousand for medical expenses was secured.
The anxiety that had weighed on my heart for so long finally lifted. I had played a little trick in this matter, but I did not regret it. After all, if one does not act for oneself, one is doomed; besides, I had neither broken the law nor harmed anyone. I just wanted my brother to be well.
Li Ming's surgery went smoothly, and his recovery was progressing well.
I stayed with him in the hospital, praying every night for his swift recovery.
"Sis, don't go..." my brother murmured in his sleep.
My nose tinged with sadness as I held his hand and softly replied, "Mingming, I won't leave. I will always be here with you."
Days passed, and Li Ming's condition gradually improved.
I did not leave the factory. After this incident, I became even more certain that my parents would not pay for my college tuition, so I had to rely on myself. At the same time, I was looking for opportunities to persuade my parents to let me continue my studies. As the saying goes, hard work pays off; eventually, I received an opportunity.
