As Jonas burst out of the cave, his body was already exhausted, and his heartbeat thundered in his ears. He stumbled through the familiar terrain, finally stopping in front of the tent they had set up when they first arrived. A cool breeze hit him, but his heart felt unbearably heavy.
In the distance, the cave was collapsing at an astonishing speed, massive boulders tumbling down as if the very spine of the earth was being ruthlessly broken. Flames surged from deep within the cave like a flood, mingling with black smoke that shot up into the sky. The fire painted the sky red, and the air around him was thick with the smell of burning, waves of scorching heat crashing over him. Jonas stood there, witnessing it all; the scene before him felt like the end of days—nature had lost control at this moment, no longer resembling the world they once knew.
The sounds from deep within the cave had become muffled, but Jonas could still faintly hear the anguished cries from below—it was Raymond's voice. That voice was filled with despair and madness, as if it were the last desperate struggle of a soul, causing him to shudder involuntarily. The flames consumed everything, and along with the thunderous crash of falling rocks, Raymond's cries were gradually drowned out by the explosive roar of fire and collapsing earth.
Jonas's legs gave way beneath him, and he fell heavily to his knees. He gasped for breath, looking up at the cave that was slowly being buried, a whirlwind of emotions swirling within him. All the sins—the former companion Raymond, Mocus's madness, countless deaths and wrong choices—were dissipating along with the flames. And now, deep within this land, the dark forces that had once been hidden were being ruthlessly purified and buried by fire.
Thick ashes floated in the sky like weightless souls, silently scattering in the air and intertwining with sparks carried by the wind. Jonas's gaze fixed on the wild dance of flames and dust; he silently vowed to bring back the truth of this place to share with the world. Those lost lives and dark truths deserved to be known.
However, amidst this fire and collapse, Jonas understood deeply that this end was merely another unknown beginning.
Kneeling on the ground, his entire body began to tremble from extreme fatigue and mental breakdown. His vision blurred, and the world around him faded into darkness and distance. Suddenly, a wave of intense nausea surged from his stomach; he couldn't help but retch violently until he expelled everything from his stomach.
Looking down at the ground, he was horrified to find that what he had vomited was not just remnants of food but also writhing black worms as if they had been forcibly expelled from his body. The worms lay scattered on the ground; instead of crawling as they should have been, they appeared lifeless. Their bodies shriveled and deformed like dead plants, oozing a viscous black liquid.
A wave of indescribable fear struck Jonas—these worms had been parasitizing him! His hands trembled as he touched his chest; images of his contact with Raymond flashed through his mind. It was that encounter that allowed these damned parasites to invade his body. The thought sent chills down his spine, filling him with uncontrollable dread and disgust.
Yet when he looked again at the worms on the ground, he noticed they were no longer moving; their life force seemed completely extinguished. Jonas gasped in terror, disbelief flooding his eyes. He knew that their death must be linked to the destruction of their host. Although these vile creatures had briefly invaded his body, it seemed that their control over him ended with their host's demise.
His heart continued to race wildly; breaths came in quick gasps as sweat streamed down his forehead. He felt he had narrowly escaped death but knew he was not far from it still. Clenching his teeth tightly, Jonas fought to steady himself and forced himself to calm down. This nightmare had finally come to an end, but he knew he must survive to bring all this back to reality.
However, just as Jonas tried to quell his inner fear, a low and chilling voice suddenly echoed in his mind. The voice was hoarse and indistinct, emerging from countless dark corners with an eerie malevolence. Its tone whispered directly into Jonas's soul, sending a shiver through him as he felt coldness seep into his limbs.
"Do you think... it's all over?" The voice murmured lowly, laced with a strange laughter. "We will reunite... one day, we will awaken again."
Jonas felt his entire body tense up, his heart racing as if it were about to leap from his chest. His breath quickened, and his hand instinctively tightened around the gun as he scanned the surroundings, fearing that the long-dead Worms might suddenly reappear. Yet, the silence remained unbroken, save for the wind whispering softly in his ears.
But that voice continued to roar relentlessly in his mind, filled with boundless hatred and malice. "You can't escape, Jonas... You will always remember us, remember this darkness. You will live in fear for the rest of your life... until we return!"
Cold sweat broke out on Jonas's forehead as he struggled to shake off the venomous voice, but it clung to his soul like a parasite, impossible to escape. The voice was saturated with vengeful intent, as if proclaiming an unavoidable fate. He knew that even though the Black Worm's host had perished, the malevolent spirits that had infested him seemed far from dead.
The voice issued one final threat in his mind, leaving behind an inescapable curse: "Jonas, you will forever live in this shadow until that day... when we awaken again to reclaim what is ours."
Jonas's body trembled slightly with fear; he understood that this voice could not be easily erased. The curse was like a hidden scar, deeply etched into his heart. Even though the battle before him had ended, the war within seemed just to be beginning. He gripped the gun tightly and looked up towards the horizon, where billowing smoke obscured the sky, as if the future had been completely swallowed by this disaster.
He knew this nightmare might not yet be over.
