In the photo, Shangguan Ming was talking with several men in black, their expressions grim. They pushed each other slightly, but it didn't escalate into a real fight.
"This is..." My hands trembled slightly.
"We contacted the police," Jiang Feng said quietly. "These men in black are local gangsters, and..."
I suddenly looked up, my heart pounding like a drum.
"And your husband may be connected to them. The police have already boarded the ship; they say he might be involved in a financial fraud case."
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning. A fraud case? The man who once seemed perfect in my eyes was actually a con artist?
Suddenly, the door swung open! It was that woman— Hu Lan.
"Um... Ms. Zhu, are you okay?" Her expression was somewhat flustered.
"I'm fine, and whether I'm okay or not has nothing to do with you," I replied coldly. "What are you doing here?"
"Well... it's like this. I'm involved with Shangguan Ming, and I believe you already know that. I didn't come on board because of him; he owes me money."
"Owes you money? How much?"
"After several dealings, it's nearly three hundred thousand. I'm not asking you to pay his debts. Shangguan Ming has had substantial debts for a while now. He married you shortly after being with you; I'm just giving you a heads-up. Please be cautious. That's all I wanted to say." Hu Lan then turned and left without looking back.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. All the pieces finally fell into place. It turned out that I was just Shangguan Ming's new cash cow. If I died, he could inherit my late husband's estate and everything else at home.
Under Shangguan Ming, there are several businesses. I am not with him for any ulterior motives, so I haven't delved into the details.
These companies are likely already drowning in debt.
I held back my tears and looked at Jiang Feng. "Can you help me contact the officer?"
In the courtroom, the air was heavy as lead. I sat on the Plaintiff's Stand, coldly observing Shangguan Ming on the Defendant's Stand.
The man who once seemed perfect in my eyes now appeared like a trapped beast, his pale face etched with anxiety.
"Defendant Shangguan Ming, do you plead guilty?" The judge's voice echoed in the silent courtroom.
Shangguan Ming stood up, his gaze flickering. "I do not plead guilty. This is all a misunderstanding; I would never push my newlywed wife off a boat."
I clenched my fists, my nails digging deep into my palms. This man was still arguing even at this point.
"Victim Zhu Linghua, do you have anything to say?" The judge turned to me.
I stood up and took a deep breath. "Your Honor, I know my testimony may not hold much weight, but he indeed had a motive to kill me."
I listed Shangguan Ming's motives one by one, from his massive debts to what Hu Lan had told me. With each point I made, I could feel Shangguan Ming's gaze piercing through me like a knife.
"These are all fabrications!" Shangguan Ming suddenly shouted in anger. "She is lying!"
I let out a cold laugh. "Oh really? How about this?" I took out the video surveillance that Jiang Feng had given me.
The recording captured a conversation between Shangguan Ming and gang members. Although it wasn't very clear, I could faintly hear Shangguan Ming say, "Wait for me to take care of him!"
The courtroom erupted in chaos. Shangguan Ming's face turned pale, like a statue on the verge of collapse.
Though Shangguan Ming was crumbling, he still refused to give in. "I was just discussing online games with them; it didn't mean anything else."
I looked at him, my eyes burning with the fire of revenge. "Do you think I'm still that naive and ignorant Zhu Linghua?"
The atmosphere in the courtroom was tense, our gazes clashing in the air. In that moment, I seemed to see my past self—the foolish woman kept in the dark.
The court decided to postpone the verdict, and Shangguan Ming was released on bail.
Being released on bail meant that the court was likely to find him guilty.
The thrill of revenge intertwined with the pain of the past, leaving me momentarily unsure whether to cry or laugh.
