In the dark and deep Undersea Tunnel, the three of them exchanged silent worries through their glances. As they ventured deeper into the unknown depths of the sea, the surrounding water pressure felt like a heavy boulder pressing against their chests, intensifying the suffocating sensation, while their internal craving for oxygen grew more urgent with each difficult breath.
Without the protection of diving suits and oxygen tanks, and lacking electrically powered devices to generate life-sustaining oxygen, they could only rely on their wits and nature's gifts to seek a glimmer of hope in this silent, suffocating deep sea. It seemed that the deeper they went into the Undersea Tunnel, the less sustenance it provided.
Leng Fengyang tried to calm his breathing, but as the leader of the trio, he remained exceptionally composed in such perilous circumstances. "We need to find a way to produce oxygen," he stated firmly.
Luo Shanhe expressed some concern but did not back down. "Before I retired, I learned some first aid knowledge. We can generate hydrogen and oxygen by electrolyzing seawater, but we don't have a power source."
A Yan furrowed her brows but suddenly her eyes lit up. "I remember my grandfather mentioning a method where certain metals react with seawater to produce hydrogen. Although it's not very efficient, it might help us in an emergency. I recall that magnesium can react with seawater to release hydrogen, and the heat generated can slightly raise the surrounding temperature, reducing energy consumption."
Upon hearing A Yan's words, she quickly searched through her backpack. Fortunately, they had prepared some emergency tools and essentials for potential underwater exploration, which included a small packet of Magnesium Strip.
After swiftly retrieving the Magnesium Strip, A Yan turned to Luo Shanhe and asked, "Lao Luo, do you have a lighter with you?"
Luo Shanhe was momentarily confused but instinctively pulled out his lighter from his pocket, watching curiously as A Yan busily worked.
A Yan took the lighter and said excitedly, "Magnesium Strip burns with a bright white light and heat. If we ignite it in a closed space and extinguish it with seawater, we might collect some hydrogen. While it mainly produces oxygen, this process will consume some of the oxygen in the seawater and release what we need."
Understanding now, the three exchanged glances and quickly sprang into action. Using their waterproof cloth and rope, they temporarily constructed a simple enclosed space.
Leng Fengyang set down the blood-stained rebar and carefully ignited the Magnesium Strip with the lighter. Instantly, a dazzling white light pierced through the darkness of the seabed accompanied by a hissing sound as the Magnesium Strip burned fiercely, releasing a significant amount of heat and light.
Luo Shanhe and A Yan quickly doused the flames with seawater while collecting the gases produced. Though this process was rudimentary and dangerous, its effectiveness exceeded their expectations.
As the Magnesium Strip burned and was extinguished by seawater, they noticeably felt the surrounding air becoming clearer. Although the oxygen content was still insufficient for prolonged breathing, it at least provided them with a lifeline.
"This method is only temporary," Leng Fengyang adjusted his breathing rhythm before continuing. "We must keep searching for an exit or find a more stable source of oxygen."
A Yan suggested, "We could try using more Magnesium Strips while looking for other materials on the seabed that might react with seawater to produce more oxygen. Additionally, maintaining body temperature and minimizing movement are key to conserving oxygen."
Leng Fengyang nodded; although A Yan's suggestion sounded somewhat risky, every possible plan was worth trying in their current predicament. He took a deep breath, striving to remain calm while analyzing their situation: "A Yan's method is worth attempting, but all our supplies are stuck on the tank. Therefore, we must ensure that our current resources can sustain us until we successfully obtain oxygen."
Just as Leng Fengyang and A Yan were discussing strategies to cope with their situation, Luo Shanhe unexpectedly discovered an abandoned Submersible. He exclaimed excitedly, "A Yan! A-Feng! There's an old Submersible here! It looks worn out but some basic life-support systems seem intact. The oxygen tank has limited oxygen left but enough to provide us with some buffer time. Also, I found a backup battery pack that should be able to restart some functions of the Submersible including lights and basic communication equipment."
Upon hearing the news, Leng Fengyang and A Yan's eyes sparkled with a glimmer of hope. They quickly made their way to the location of Luo Shanhe, where the abandoned Submersible lay like a solitary fortress in the sea, quietly resting on the dim ocean floor, waiting for their arrival.
"We need to check this system as soon as possible," Leng Fengyang said, barely containing his excitement. "If the oxygen supply can be sustained, we will have more time to try A Yan's proposal and also a chance to escape."
A Yan nodded in agreement and began inspecting the life support system of the Submersible. They carefully replaced the oxygen tanks, ensuring that each step minimized oxygen consumption as much as possible.
As the battery pack was connected, the lights inside the Submersible gradually illuminated, casting a faint yet warm glow that dispelled the surrounding darkness and brightened their path of hope.
After confirming that the basic functions of the Submersible were restored, the three of them crawled inside. Leng Fengyang suggested, "Let's rest here for a bit to regain our strength and come up with a detailed plan. A Yan, you can take this time to outline how to safely increase oxygen production for our experiments. Lao Luo, you handle checking the communication equipment; that's the Submersible's eyes. As for me, I'll figure out how to start this Submersible."
Leng Fengyang's words acted like a shot of adrenaline, giving direction to their trio. A Yan pulled out a yellowed piece of paper from his backpack and began sketching out a flowchart for increasing oxygen production, carefully considering each step to achieve optimal results with limited resources.
Luo Shanhe slung his sniper rifle over his shoulder and busily disassembled the communication equipment. His gaze was focused and determined as his fingers deftly navigated through the complex wiring, occasionally producing soft sounds of adjustments.
Meanwhile, Leng Fengyang immersed himself in front of the control panel of the Submersible, his eyes scanning through a myriad of buttons and indicator lights, trying to find key clues to activate the Submersible amidst all the complicated information.
But just as they were about to start up the Submersible, a deep and prolonged roar seemed to echo from the depths of darkness, as if some colossal creature was slowly awakening. Leng Fengyang's heart tightened suddenly as he tried to pinpoint the source of that sound.
