Leng Fengyang pressed the accelerator without hesitation, the bumps on the snowy ground intensifying, and the air inside the vehicle grew tense. With his skilled driving and keen sense of the road conditions, he deftly maneuvered through the sea of corpses, each sharp turn causing the vehicle to shudder violently.
Amidst the panic and chaos, the trio finally broke free from the encirclement, their vehicle bursting through the half-closed iron gates of the Research Base like a wild horse escaping its reins. Behind those gates lay a stark contrast of tranquility and peace, a sanctuary amidst the storm that offered them a moment to catch their breath.
At the entrance, the horde of corpses hesitated, as if struck by some unseen force. Their grotesque silhouettes lingered outside the iron gates, too fearful to step further.
Inside was a different scene altogether. Dim yellow lights illuminated an expansive plaza surrounded by long-abandoned research facilities, creating an atmosphere that was both desolate and mysterious.
Seeing no immediate threats, they exited the vehicle and cautiously approached this forgotten base. They passed through several empty laboratories until they arrived at a warehouse door partially obscured by snow. A strange glow seeped through the cracks, and driven by curiosity, they pushed open the heavy door together. The sight before them left them momentarily stunned.
A massive Research Vessel loomed in front of them, seemingly having collided with an iceberg during a mission and subsequently dragged here for emergency repairs that were never completed, leaving it abandoned along with the base.
"A-Feng," I felt a sense of unease creeping in; something about this place hinted at hidden dangers. We should leave as soon as possible."
A Yan's voice trembled slightly, her intuition serving as a warning against the chilling winds that made one instinctively alert.
"What's there to be afraid of, A Yan? Don't be so tense. This is just an abandoned Research Vessel; who knows what discoveries we might find on board? It could provide us with valuable supplies for our journey," Luo Shanhe replied optimistically, stepping confidently onto the deck of the forgotten Research Vessel, his eyes sparkling with curiosity and desire for the unknown.
Leng Fengyang understood A Yan's concerns. The vast expanse of snow surrounding them felt desolate and isolated; this sudden appearance of a ship was indeed jarring and thought-provoking. The reality was harsh; they desperately needed resources to survive. Every glimmer of hope should not be easily dismissed. He reassured her, "A Yan, your worries are valid. Right now, we are in this apocalyptic world. As Lao Luo said, this ship might hold some treasures for us. Even if it's just to gather more supplies that could aid our survival, this adventure is worth it."
"How about this? Lao Luo and I will go check it out while you wait in the vehicle for us to call you," he suggested. "And take that walkie-talkie with you."
Leng Fengyang's words eased A Yan's tension slightly, though she still felt apprehensive.
Luo Shanhe led the way with his rifle drawn while Leng Fengyang followed closely behind, carefully drawing out a blood-stained rebar from his pack as they stepped into the ship's cabin.
Inside the Research Vessel, time had silently etched its mark on every inch of space, leaving behind intricate traces of its passage. The cabin walls were mottled, revealing outlines of a bygone era; despite enduring countless hardships, its structure stubbornly maintained its basic framework.
In the two-tiered design of the cabin, light seemed bound by thick layers of history, casting an unusually dim and eerie ambiance throughout.
Occasionally, a few weak beams of light broke free from their confines, filtering through the gaps in the mottled portholes and casting a dim glow on the Human Face, amplifying the sense of oppression.
On the second level of the ship, an unusual room came into view, its door slightly ajar. Leng Fengyang pushed it open to reveal the control room, once the heart of this scientific expedition.
The entire control room was enveloped in a deathly silence, interrupted only by the occasional whimper of wind seeping through the cracks. The surface of the control panel was covered with a thin layer of dust; the once vibrant glow of technology had faded into obscurity, leaving only a few indicator lights flickering in the darkness like ghostly eyes watching the intruders.
Scattered across the front were several yellowed records, their edges worn and frayed, yet the handwriting remained legible, chronicling the Research Vessel's past glory and its eventual tragedy. The documents revealed that this Research Vessel had once been a pioneering ship exploring uncharted territories but had met with disaster during a deep-sea expedition.
The hull had suffered damage from a collision with an iceberg, but even more shocking were the signs of large-scale attacks within the cabin. This discovery stirred a complex mix of emotions in Leng Fengyang and Luo Shanhe, indicating that they would not only have to contend with relentless corpses but also face an unprecedented crisis looming nearby.
"A-Feng," Luo Shanhe remarked, "it seems A Yan's intuition was right."
Luo Shanhe's previously resolute gaze faltered as he beheld the horrifying bite and scratch marks inside the cabin; even he felt a chill creeping in despite his courage.
Leng Fengyang slowly crouched down, his eyes scanning the coagulated bloodstains on the floor and the signs of fierce struggle surrounding them. He furrowed his brow and said, "Lao Luo, there are no signs of survivors or remains here—not even a complete corpse. Don't you find it unsettling?"
At his words, Luo Shanhe involuntarily shivered, as if a cold wind had swept through. He swallowed hard, uncertainty lacing his voice as he replied, "Are you suggesting that the people on this ship didn't escape but were attacked by some unknown entity? And that they were all consumed?"
The thought sent chills down their spines.
Leng Fengyang pondered for a moment before gazing deeply into the distance where sunlight glimmered on the sea's surface, concealing endless unknowns and dangers. "Indeed," he said. "My instincts tell me that what happened here is beyond human capability. Look at how the blood is distributed; it doesn't resemble a simple brawl or follow typical maritime disaster patterns. It appears more like something was hunted down with incredible speed and efficiency. Moreover, even skeletal remains are scarce—this is no coincidence."
Luo Shanhe's complexion paled further at these words. He surveyed his surroundings—the chaotic footprints, broken Wuyan fragments, and the faint scent of blood in the air—all corroborating Leng Fengyang's deductions. He checked his rifle nervously and asked in a trembling voice, "If it's another Anomaly's monster, what should we do next?"
Leng Fengyang quickly rose to his feet, brushing off dust from his clothes as he replied solemnly, "We need to check our surroundings first and gather any supplies that might be useful before we evacuate this place as soon as possible."
Upon hearing this, Luo Shanhe's expression turned serious; realizing the urgency of their situation, he immediately began searching for useful items.
As he struggled to push open a stainless steel door covered in thick dust, a chilling breeze rushed at him. What greeted him next was a row of neatly arranged refrigeration units glowing with an eerie blue light.
Luo Shanhe hurried forward, his gaze locking onto those labeled Plasma. Inside were plasma bags that shimmered transparently, leaving him unable to hide his shock and excitement.
"A-Feng! Come look! There's Plasma here!"
