As the gentle night fell, the warmth wrapped in a floral cotton jacket, the three-person team shared a peaceful night in the vehicle. For A Yan, this was a long-awaited tranquil harbor. The companionship of the team served as a solid shield, while Leng Fengyang's presence was a soft light in her heart, illuminating the lingering gloom.
In this confined space, she found a moment of peace and support, her heart swelling with gratitude for this hard-won tranquility and the precious warmth they shared amidst the chaos.
As dawn broke, the trio revived with renewed energy. After having some food, they prepared to continue their journey. With the engine humming softly, the vehicle slowly drove deeper into the Snowy Domain, its wheels crunching over the snow with a faint rustling sound.
Sunlight spilled over the pristine snow, dazzlingly bright, adorning the Snowy Domain in a beautiful silver cloak. Outside the window, an endless expanse of snow stretched before them, pure and serene, refreshing their spirits and allowing them to forget the icy depths they traversed.
Suddenly, a faint yet unusual sound came from beneath the snow, as if something was slowly writhing below. A Yan's heart tightened; her intuition as a woman made her alert immediately. She turned to Leng Fengyang and Luo Shanhe, her eyes conveying a warning.
"Watch the ground; something is moving."
Leng Fengyang's deep voice echoed in the vehicle as he gripped the steering wheel tightly, fully focused and tense, ready to respond to any potential threat. Meanwhile, Luo Shanhe had already readied his heavy sniper rifle, chambering a round and quietly extending the barrel out of the window. His right hand rested steadily on the trigger, waiting for that monster to come within range.
As the vehicle moved further ahead, the disturbances beneath the snow became more pronounced, as if something was attempting to break through from below. Suddenly, several patches of snow erupted violently as grotesque figures burst forth from beneath, accompanied by flying snowflakes and dirt—a new version of an underground-dwelling corpse!
This corpse appeared different from previous mutations; its skin exhibited an eerie semi-translucent quality that seemed to reveal decaying flesh within. Moreover, it was not a slow-moving creature; instead, it surged upward with alarming speed and lunged toward the vehicle with sharp claws flailing in mid-air while emitting a piercing shriek.
"Lao Luo! Fire!"
Leng Fengyang reacted swiftly; seeing that rotting body charging like an evil spirit toward their windshield, he abruptly twisted the steering wheel. The vehicle swerved sharply to the left, its rear tracing an elegant arc as it drifted to the right.
At that moment, in the back seat, Luo Shanhe steadied his finger on the sniper rifle's trigger. His gaze sharpened as he accurately locked onto the corpse and fired with a resounding crack—delivering a fatal blow to the creature.
They had easily taken down one monster, but before they could catch their breath, ominous sounds echoed again from beneath the snow. This time, however, it seemed to come from all directions, sending chills down their spines.
Driving through snow was already fraught with challenges; now faced with a rapidly advancing and highly aggressive horde of corpses, their situation had undoubtedly become more perilous and difficult.
Leng Fengyang gripped the steering wheel tightly; his hands trembled slightly from tension. The snowflakes cut through their line of sight like sharp blades. Yet relying on his experience as a Grave Hunter and keen instincts, he navigated through the vast snowy expanse in search of an escape route.
"A Yan! I've activated the system interface," he called out while tapping on a light blue screen. "Quickly check the map for any shortcuts out of this Snowy Domain."
Leng Fengyang's voice cut through the howling wind and snow, carrying an undeniable resolve mixed with a hint of barely perceptible anxiety. He understood that every second of delay could plunge them into dire straits.
Hearing this, A Yan's fingers danced swiftly and precisely across the screen. Her gaze darted through the complex map, finally locking onto a target. About ten meters ahead, there was an abandoned scientific research station that might provide them with a temporary shelter from the wind and snow, but the situation inside was uncertain.
Before A Yan could finish her sentence, Leng Fengyang had already slammed down on the accelerator. The vehicle roared to life like a beast poised to pounce, surging into the unknown ahead.
While focused on driving, Leng Fengyang inadvertently noticed the smart prompt system he carried with him. It seemed to have its own triggers that did not follow his intentions but were determined by some unknown preference within the system. This discovery quietly planted a seed of unease in his heart—more accurately, a vague sense of discomfort and dissatisfaction.
Luo Shanhe sat in the back seat, his sniper rifle pressed against the window. Through the scope, he observed the surroundings; the corpses moving across the snowy ground were alarmingly swift, as if they felt no cold at all, driven solely by their thirst for living beings.
A fierce glint flashed in Luo Shanhe's eyes. He knew that every bullet must hit its mark because their ammunition was limited and could not be wasted.
"A Yan, Lao Luo, hold on tight! I'm taking you for a ride!"
Leng Fengyang took a deep breath and slammed down on the gas pedal. The car roared like an enraged beast, speeding across the snow. The horde of corpses behind them seemed to be provoked by this sudden burst of speed; their howls grew even more piercing as they quickened their pace in relentless pursuit.
As the speed increased, the vehicle began to bounce violently over the snow, threatening to lose control at any moment. Leng Fengyang gritted his teeth, gripping the steering wheel tightly as he constantly adjusted his direction to avoid hidden pits and obstacles concealed beneath the snow.
The three inside the car were tense, needing no words to communicate; they worked together instinctively to face this deadly trial.
Suddenly, an open area appeared ahead. Leng Fengyang's eyes lit up; he knew this was their chance to shake off the horde. He sharply turned the steering wheel, and the car veered toward the clearing.
Though the corpses were hot on their heels, they had no choice but to slow down and regroup due to this sudden change in direction.
"Lao Luo, get ready to cover us!" Leng Fengyang shouted as he pressed down on the brakes, bringing the car to a steady stop at the edge of the clearing.
Luo Shanhe immediately opened the sunroof and poked his head out, aiming his sniper scope at the corpses left behind. His finger gently rested on the trigger as he waited for the perfect moment to shoot.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With several crisp gunshots ringing out, a few leading corpses fell lifelessly to the ground. The remaining corpses seemed momentarily stunned by this unexpected assault and hesitated to advance.
However, this brief pause was only temporary; soon enough, they roared back into action once more.
"Hurry up! Don't stop!" A Yan urged, as she had already mapped out the route on the Light Blue Interface, pointing towards the nearby Research Base.
