Leng Fengyang clutched the ancient Buddha Head, heavy with history and mystery, as he sprinted toward the door. The sound of his footsteps echoed in the empty Temple; he was racing against time.
Just as he was about to burst through the ancient, heavy wooden door, a sudden noise erupted from behind him.
Turning back for a moment, he saw the once-sturdy roof and beams of the Temple seemingly shaken by an invisible force. Cracks spread like wild vines, quickly weaving into a shattered web.
Fine yellow sand and heavy stones fell away amidst a deafening roar, kicking up clouds of dust that obscured the light above.
In that instant, a shocking thought flashed through his mind: the collapse of the Temple might be caused by his grip on the ancient Buddha Head.
However, faced with this unexpected turn of events, Leng Fengyang showed no signs of retreat or hesitation. He knew that the Buddha Head was the key to his mission; failure to secure it would mean disaster. With determination, he dashed through the door at full speed.
As he burst outside, a thunderous roar echoed behind him, like the earth splitting apart. The entire Temple collapsed with a resounding crash, dust and debris blotting out the sky and burying the once-sacred place beneath ruins.
Leng Fengyang silently thanked his luck for escaping from that coffin-like, eerie Temple. He gently caressed the solemn Buddha Head as if expressing gratitude for its unseen protection before resolutely stepping onto the only visible path ahead.
Just when he sought a relatively safe place to conclude his mission, an unbelievable sight suddenly caught his eye, stirring within him an indescribable excitement and joy that brought tears to his cheeks.
It seemed that due to some mechanism disturbance in the Underground City, space had subtly shifted. A tank that had been buried deep beneath the yellow sand and was nearly impossible to retrieve miraculously appeared before him.
He quickly accessed the vehicle's owner fingerprint to open the trunk and carefully placed the Buddha Head inside before returning to the driver's seat.
Using his thoughts, he activated the light blue System Panel and entered the Mission Center to submit his mission completion. The interface displayed a notification.
"Congratulations player for successfully unlocking Mission No. X. The Buddha Head has been handed over to official authorities; glory awaits! Rich rewards: detailed mapping of Underground City revealing unknown areas, points to aid your ascent, a pair of snow boots for more comfortable exploration in cold regions, and a surprise blind box blueprint yet to be revealed. All rewards can be exchanged at the Trading Center for desired treasures."
"As of now, player points have accumulated to Y points, rising to Zth place on the leaderboard—an impressive advancement showcasing your strength and effort. We hope you continue your winning streak and write another glorious chapter!"
Indeed, higher risks brought greater rewards; this was Leng Fengyang's first time receiving such generous rewards. He found himself slowly growing fond of this system game.
However, he needed to use the detailed mapping of Underground City to quickly locate A Yan and Luo Shanhe.
Tightly gripping the newly exchanged mapping from the Trading Center, Leng Fengyang noted not only the complex structure of Underground City but also several vaguely marked unexplored mysterious areas. Among them was a coordinate shrouded in thick fog—perhaps another space within Underground City.
With no time to waste, following the map's guidance, Leng Fengyang held tightly onto a blood-stained rebar in his right hand while remaining alert.
His left hand wielded a flashlight that flickered in the deep shadows of Underground City but could barely illuminate a few feet ahead; thick stone walls surrounded him tightly as he ventured deeper into darkness.
Suddenly, a low growl shattered the silence. Leng Fengyang's heart raced; he knew he had entered zombie territory.
Though yellow sand mercilessly consumed some traces of decay, their numbers remained vast enough to instill fear. Countless humans had gradually become anomalies due to infection; this overwhelming number loomed like an unfathomable abyss.
Perhaps the only way to prevent further tragedy is to quickly develop the Zombie Toxin Vaccine. The corpses staggered forward, their putrid stench making one gag, yet there seemed to be a bloodthirsty greed flickering in their hollow eye sockets.
Leng Fengyang moved swiftly through the intricate terrain of the Underground City, dodging and weaving among the undead. Each swing of his rebar was accompanied by the wails of the corpses as they fell, but more of them seemed to emerge from the darkness, an endless tide.
Just as he found himself in a desperate struggle, a rustling sound came from beneath him. A horde of giant mutated rats had been drawn in by the stench of blood, adding chaos to the battle. Leng Fengyang had no choice but to divide his attention; he fought off the corpses while simultaneously stomping and striking at the cunning rats with his rebar to keep them at bay.
However, Leng Fengyang knew that this war of attrition was akin to slow suicide. The only chance for survival lay in quickly escaping this place. In a moment of urgency, he rapidly checked the mapping paper of the Underground City. The heavily fogged coordinates might just be the key to turning his fate around and escaping this predicament.
Without hesitation, as the mutated rats attacked the corpses in confusion, Leng Fengyang deftly used the cover of darkness to slip into a dim and deep cave. As he ventured deeper, he heard faint voices in the distance—familiar voices!
His heart raced as he quickened his pace toward the sound. Soon, a familiar figure came into view; it was A Yan, who was bent over examining an ancient stone tablet while keeping her firearm ready beside her, ever vigilant for Luo Shanhe.
Their silhouettes appeared somewhat weary under the dim light, but upon seeing Leng Fengyang, A Yan rushed forward, her emotions spilling over with excitement and relief. "A-Feng! I'm so glad you're okay! We were so worried about you!"
Luo Shanhe clapped a hand on Leng Fengyang's shoulder and said solemnly, "Brother, just being alive is a win. By the way, how did you find your way here?"
Leng Fengyang smiled slightly and explained briefly, "Just luck and some intuition. I was forced in here by the corpses and mutated rats outside. I didn't expect to find you both here."
The three of them had experienced a brief separation that felt like an eternity; their bond had become even more precious amid the long apocalypse. They cherished each other all the more.
"The tank is nearby," A Yan said. "We can replenish our energy first before looking for an exit."
