"We have to leave here as soon as possible. The hourglass has started, and the entire Underground City could be buried," Leng Fengyang's words cut through the oppressive air like a blade of ice, tightening A Yan and Luo Shanhe's nerves.
A Yan quickly pulled out the flashlight she had collected from her backpack. Although its beam was weak, it was enough to illuminate a few meters ahead, adding a glimmer of hope to their perilous escape.
"A Yan, stick with me. Lao Luo, you cover the rear and watch out for any approaching corpses," Leng Fengyang calmly assigned tasks. Luo Shanhe nodded, gripping his firearm tightly; the ammunition they had recovered was now crucial for their survival.
The three of them moved upstream along the Dark River. The water flowed rapidly due to the changing terrain, splashing cold droplets that soaked their clothes but also brought a sense of alertness.
Leng Fengyang led the way, tightly holding onto the blood-stained rebar. Though it wasn't the most convenient weapon, it had become his most reliable companion. He navigated through the narrow and winding rock walls with hawk-like vigilance, always on guard against dangers lurking in the shadows.
A Yan followed closely behind. Although she lacked a direct weapon, the various vials in her backpack were her greatest support. She occasionally poured a few drops of mysterious liquid from the vials onto the ground, which quickly evaporated into a faint mist in the air, temporarily confusing and driving away the scent-sensitive corpses.
Luo Shanhe held his position at the back, keeping his gun aimed at any potential threats from behind. Though facing the unknown made him uneasy, Leng Fengyang and A Yan's trust gave him immense courage.
Suddenly, the flow of sand in the hourglass accelerated dramatically, as if time had lost its usual rhythm at that moment. The slowly flowing golden grains now spun wildly and fell rapidly under an invisible force, threatening to bury the entire Underground City.
Leng Fengyang reacted swiftly, grabbing A Yan, who was still in shock, while casting a glance at Luo Shanhe that urged him to run. The three of them almost instinctively sprang into action, darting through the complex surroundings near the underground Dark River in search of an escape route from this distorted realm of time.
The speed of the hourglass caused tremors throughout the Underground City; rocks and dust continuously fell from above, posing an imminent risk of collapse. A Yan clutched Leng Fengyang's hand tightly; fear filled her eyes, but as she felt the warmth of his palm, her emotions quickly calmed.
"A-Feng, we need to think of something. At this rate, we might end up buried here today," Luo Shanhe said anxiously. Before he could finish speaking, a system prompt echoed in Leng Fengyang's ear.
"Abnormal flow rate detected in surrounding hourglass; temporary shelter found. Coordinates marked. Immediate relocation to three o'clock recommended."
Upon hearing this, a glimmer sparked in Leng Fengyang's eyes as he quickly surveyed his surroundings. All he saw was endless sand swirling around them; hope seemed distant amidst all that dust. He turned to Luo Shanhe and A Yan and said in a low voice, "Lao Luo, don't panic. There's a temporary shelter at three o'clock."
Luo Shanhe's face brightened instantly upon hearing this; he immediately felt invigorated and fired his weapon at a corpse lunging at them from behind.
At that moment, Leng Fengyang held A Yan's small hand tightly and sprinted toward three o'clock with all his might. As Luo Shanhe ran while glancing back to ensure that the fallen corpse had no companions following it, he felt slightly reassured but remained vigilant against any further threats.
A few minutes later, Leng Fengyang pointed to a place not far ahead, resembling a door frame, faintly visible within the sandstorm. It must be the temporary shelter of the System Prompt.
As they drew closer, a crude hut made of large stones gradually revealed itself. The door was half ajar, as if it had been prepared specifically for those fleeing for their lives.
The three exchanged glances, without a hint of hesitation, and quickly rushed into the cramped space, shutting the heavy stone door behind them.
Inside was dim and pitch-black, but compared to the rapidly falling sand outside, this was undoubtedly an excellent place to evade the sandstorm.
Looking outside, Luo Shanhe suddenly gasped. Through the crack of the door, he saw that the horde of corpses that had been relentlessly pursuing them was now being consumed by the intensifying sand. One by one, the corpses were mercilessly swept away, disappearing beneath the vast expanse of yellow sand, leaving only a few mournful wails behind.
That was close! If it weren't for A-Feng's System Prompt, we would have met the same fate as those corpses outside.
Luo Shanhe patted his chest, set down his weapon, and sat on the ground, breathing heavily with a sense of relief at having survived.
What do we do next? This place doesn't seem very safe either; it's cramped and our supplies are in the vehicle. Sooner or later, we'll starve to death here.
A Yan looked at Leng Fengyang and asked. She was a thoughtful person; although she was young, her mind was mature. Despite her inner fear, she felt compelled to think about how they could escape this Underground City.
Leng Fengyang furrowed his brow. Using the faint light, he touched the damp stone wall and quickly calculated their options in his mind.
Luo Shanhe got up from the ground and checked his weapon's ammunition. He spoke urgently: A Yan is right; this place is definitely not suitable for staying long. By the way, A-Feng, can your system provide more information about this Underground City?
Leng Fengyang opened the system interface through thought and displayed a light blue Virtual Screen in front of everyone.
He tapped a few times on it and then said: The system is analyzing the surrounding environment and trying to connect to any remaining networks in Underground City. According to preliminary scans, this appears to be an abandoned shelter system designed with multiple Escape Routes; however, most may be blocked or collapsed due to disrepair. However, the system has detected an unusual energy fluctuation in the northeast direction; it might indicate some unknown device or exit.
What are we waiting for? No—wait! The question is how do we get out of this Small Dark Room?
Before Luo Shanhe could finish speaking, he eagerly stood up but unexpectedly collided heavily with the cold and solid stone wall. The impact jolted him awake as he realized he was in an airtight temporary shelter made entirely of stone.
[No exits detected in the shelter.]
At that moment, Leng Fengyang hoped to use System Prompt to find a way out of the Small Dark Room but was met with such a cold response instead.
As these words fell, the three looked at each other helplessly and despairingly.
In the cramped space, the air seemed to freeze. They were tightly wrapped in shadows of despair as if forgotten by the world in this endless darkness. The yearning for survival lingered in their hearts but found no glimmer of light.
