The group of people displayed fierce expressions, brandishing firearms that exuded an undeniable threat. Leng Fengyang understood clearly that if he did not hand over the diary, an unnecessary conflict or even a gunfight might be inevitable. He subtly cast a steady glance at the impatient Luo Shanhe beside him, signaling him to remain composed to avoid escalating the situation.
"Several friends, I can hand over the diary to you, but please show mercy and do not destroy anything here," he said.
In the dim light of Underground City, Leng Fengyang scrutinized the group before him. He did not see Li Ming or Zhang Wei among them and speculated that this was likely an advance team sent by Li Ming.
"Boss, comparing with the photo provided by Dr. Li, this is probably the guy we are looking for," one soldier remarked as he pulled out a picture of Leng Fengyang from his pocket and compared it closely with the man in front of him, his tone certain.
The captain gently holstered his pistol and slowly approached Leng Fengyang, suddenly snatching the notebook from his hands. After quickly flipping through a few pages, a glint of greed flashed in his eyes. "This must be the design blueprint for Underground City, right? I can't be bothered to look at it; just lead us out of this hellhole first."
"It seems we won't be able to leave just yet," Leng Fengyang began to say when a chilling low growl echoed through Underground City, reminiscent of rotting corpses. The sound was like a summons from hell, instantly shattering the surrounding silence and signaling an unprecedented crisis ahead.
Furrowing his brows, Leng Fengyang quickly surveyed his surroundings, mentally calculating his next move. In this narrow and complex Underground City, facing an unknown number of corpses head-on would be unwise.
He turned around and snatched the diary back from the captain's hands. "These corpses are drawn here because of you. These bloodthirsty monsters will only multiply until they overrun all of Underground City. So if we don't want to become food for these creatures, we need to unite now and use the terrain advantages described in this diary to lure them away and break through one by one."
The captain prepared to draw his weapon but hesitated. Survival was paramount; he knew what was important and wouldn't have been appointed as the leader of the advance team otherwise.
Luo Shanhe nodded in agreement with Leng Fengyang's suggestion. He had already noticed their surroundings and pointed to a narrow passage not far away. "There! We can set a trap there to slow down the pursuit of the corpses."
A Yan quickly retrieved several specially made pills from her backpack—these were emergency items she had developed under Old Cabbage Head's guidance specifically for dealing with these Mutated Species. "These drugs can temporarily dull their sense of smell, buying us some time."
As the leader of the advance team assigned tasks swiftly, he pointed at Leng Fengyang. "You and I will lead the way up front; your brother here will set traps, and this lovely lady will prepare pills for cover. Everyone else stay close and maintain formation—don't fall behind."
With a command given, everyone sprang into action.
Leng Fengyang removed a rebar from his shoulder bag and charged forward like a tiger descending a mountain, weaving through the intricate passages with determination. Each movement revealed the sharpness and courage of a Grave Hunter as he used the rebar stained with zombie blood to accurately fend off those relentless pursuing corpses.
Seeing this, the captain felt a surge of defiance within him. His firearm roared like an angry dragon, continuously spewing fire as he took down each approaching corpse; spent bullet casings littered the ground, bearing witness to the intensity of this deadly struggle.
The two moved almost in sync, swiftly dispatching two decaying bodies before standing back-to-back in despairing Underground City, carving out a bloody path.
"You are Leng Fengyang? Dr. Li has been looking for you," said Lei Biao, the leader of the advance team, admiration for Leng Fengyang's bravery evident in his tone. "I am Lei Biao; I have come for you."
"It seems that I'm still quite popular with you at Dr. Li's place," Leng Fengyang said, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He was not surprised by Lei Biao's straightforwardness; ever since he had escaped from under Li Ming's watchful eyes, he had been prepared to face pursuit at any moment.
"We have no grievances between us, but taking money to do someone else's dirty work is a different matter. Let's get out first," Lei Biao stated clearly. He understood that the task he was currently shouldering, though not of his own choosing, left no room for carelessness.
He stepped forward and pulled the trigger, killing a corpse that lunged at Leng Fengyang. "Leng Fengyang, we have all heard about your abilities. Whether it’s your wit or your skills, they are truly admirable. But this time, the situation is a bit different. Dr. Li's research concerns all of humanity. He simply hopes you can assist in completing this arduous yet meaningful task. I believe you have no reason to run."
"Oh? Assisting in a task? That sounds like another form of pursuit," Leng Fengyang replied, his smile unwavering but his words laced with intrigue and caution. He shook his head lightly, his gaze piercing as if he could see into one's heart. "Lei Biao, I can tell you clearly that I, Leng Fengyang, do not take orders from others. Dr. Li's research is not aimed at stopping these man-eating monsters."
"If it's not to save humanity, then what is Dr. Li's painstaking research for?" Lei Biao was shocked by Leng Fengyang's words, but more than that, he felt confused and unwilling to accept it. He immediately questioned, "Leng Fengyang, don’t try to tarnish Dr. Li’s reputation just because you want to escape."
"Tarnish? Are you so used to being a pawn that you’ve forgotten your own worth? Do you know why A-Feng wanted to blow up the laboratory?" Luo Shanhe interjected, unable to hold back any longer.
At those words, Lei Biao's expression turned icy in an instant; the muzzle of his gun unconsciously shifted slightly as he fixed his gaze on Luo Shanhe, his voice low and dangerous. "Who are you calling a dog?"
The atmosphere froze instantly, tense enough that it felt like even the air was solidifying.
Seeing this, Leng Fengyang quickly pulled Luo Shanhe aside and stepped forward himself, speaking in a calm yet firm tone. "Lei Biao, stay calm. Lao Luo is straightforward, but what he said is true. Aren't you even a little curious about the truth hidden behind that laboratory?"
Lei Biao's hand tightened around his weapon, trembling slightly as he struggled to suppress his inner fury. "What truth?" he asked in a deep voice.
Leng Fengyang took a deep breath, his gaze intense. "The truth is that there are living specimens hidden in that laboratory; innocent children and pregnant women are imprisoned in jars. They are used as test subjects for so-called Vaccine research. Tell me, how can one pursue scientific advancement at the cost of sacrificing others' lives? How can such actions not provoke anger and skepticism?"
"Moreover," A Yan chimed in with indignation in her voice, "we're not just running away because of the Vaccine formula; we might also become Dr. Li's clinical test subjects."
