In this world filled with survival crises, being able to enjoy a hearty meal was already a blessing, yet here they were, feasting on roasted meat.
Luo Shanhe chewed with grease dripping from his mouth, unable to hide his excitement as he exclaimed, "I never imagined I would do something so crazy in my life—hunting wolves for meat. This is truly something else."
As Luo Shanhe sighed in satisfaction, the warmth of the campfire seemed to temporarily dispel the gloom of the apocalypse. However, this tranquility did not last long; the night deepened like ink, and the sounds of the wind around them took on an unusual tone, carrying an ominous premonition.
Leng Fengyang, the leader of their trio, had eyes that glinted sharply in the flickering firelight, as if he could pierce through the darkness and sense hidden dangers.
"Lao Luo, A Yan, stay alert," he said in a low voice that broke the night's silence. Gripping his trusty rebar tightly, he continued, "In this apocalypse, silence often heralds a greater storm."
Upon hearing this, Luo Shanhe quickly wiped the smile off his face and picked up his submachine gun from the ground. The bullets were loaded, and he scanned their surroundings with vigilance.
A Yan also did not dare to slack off; she set down her skewer of roasted meat and jumped into the driver's seat, ready to assist Leng Fengyang at a moment's notice should anything unexpected arise.
Just then, a faint groan echoed from nearby, shattering the stillness of the night. The three exchanged knowing glances filled with trust, each seeing confusion and wariness reflected in the others' eyes.
Leng Fengyang gestured for Luo Shanhe to find a higher vantage point. As they drew closer, the sound became clearer, laced with pain and despair.
When they reached the source of the sound, a chilling sight met their eyes: a man lay on the ground in tattered clothes, his face pale to near transparency and his eyes sunken deep into their sockets. An indescribable chill and stench of decay surrounded him—a scent mingled with the unique odor of death and rot.
Luo Shanhe's nerves instantly tightened; his finger instinctively slid toward the trigger as he prepared for this sudden horror. But at that moment, he was signaled by Leng Fengyang to hold back.
"Stay calm, Lao Luo; he is not a corpse," Leng Fengyang's voice was soft yet firm, cutting through the chaos and fear before them.
This reassurance felt like a refreshing stream to Luo Shanhe's heart; it brought him some comfort but also deepened his confusion. He halted his movements but kept his gaze sharp on the man before them, vigilance unwavering.
"What’s going on?" Luo Shanhe couldn't help but ask, seeking confirmation from Leng Fengyang.
Leng Fengyang approached slowly, his expression cautious yet sympathetic. "That’s the Rotting Corpse Aura," he explained. "It emanates from a body decaying rapidly after life has faded. The scent is more potent and unmistakably carries the essence of death. Although this person seems weak and in distress, I can sense a faint spark of life struggling within him. Perhaps he has encountered some misfortune and urgently needs help; he should not be viewed as an immediate threat."
Upon hearing this, Luo Shanhe felt a mix of emotions—admiration for Leng Fengyang's keen judgment and sympathy for the plight of this stranger. He gradually lowered his submachine gun and cautiously approached alongside Leng Fengyang to offer assistance.
"Are you human too?"
Leng Fengyang noticed their attempt to be friendly. The disheveled man spoke up, but his eyes betrayed a lingering fear and a deeper distrust.
"Wait, aren't you insulting us? We're not monsters, are we?" Luo Shanhe responded, somewhat angrily.
Realizing he had misspoken, the man quickly stammered an explanation. "No, no, I didn't mean it that way. I was just curious to confirm if you all are survivors in this apocalypse."
Upon hearing this, Luo Shanhe let out a light huff, showing his impatience.
Leng Fengyang, with a hint of sarcasm, asked, "From the way you speak, have you encountered a horde of corpses?"
"Oh, it's a long story!" The man's expression turned somber as he recalled the scene filled with crazed corpses tearing at humans. "Anyone surrounded by them had no chance of survival. If I hadn't thought quickly and disguised myself as one of those corpses, covering myself in their stench, I would have surely become one of their meals and joined the ranks of wandering souls."
His words carried a sense of relief and reflection on his narrow escape.
"Oh? Such a harrowing experience indeed makes one shudder," Leng Fengyang said, his expression growing serious. A flicker of admiration crossed his eyes as he continued, "In this apocalypse, survival is ever-changing. Your wisdom and courage are truly rare. However, to disguise oneself as a corpse requires a determination and bravery that most cannot muster."
At this moment, Luo Shanhe also softened his demeanor and spoke slowly, his voice carrying weight. "Yes, in this world turned upside down, both the brilliance and darkness of humanity are magnified. Some fall into despair while others, like you, seek a glimmer of hope amidst the direst circumstances. We are all struggling to survive in this chaos."
The man smiled bitterly at these words and continued, "Indeed, the world we once knew is gone. Now we drift like lonely boats on a vast sea, unsure when we might find a safe harbor. Yet even so, I have never given up hope. I believe that as long as there is light in our hearts, one day it will illuminate this darkness."
He paused for a moment and scanned the group with determined eyes. "Since we have met here, it must be fate. I assume you three are also heading to Dark Side of the Moon, right?"
"Enough with the sentimentality; let's get moving," A Yan interjected impatiently from behind the wheel. Having already started the engine, she was tired of listening to three grown men wax lyrical.
"I'm A Yan, who are you?" she asked the man.
"I'm Yun Er, Yun as in 'clouds rolling,' and Er as in 'sharp ears and keen eyes,'" came the reply from Yun Er, who smiled warmly. Her voice was soothing and strong enough to pierce through the gloom of the apocalypse, bringing a touch of warmth to their hearts. "It's nice to meet you, A Yan."
Hearing this, A Yan couldn't help but smile back slightly.
"Don't be so formal, Yun Er. We're companions now; helping each other is only natural. By the way, did you all hear about the hope for survival at Dark Side of the Moon, which is why you're headed there?"
As she drove through the ruins of the abandoned city, her curiosity piqued.
Yun Er nodded thoughtfully and gazed into the unknown darkness ahead. "Yes, though the journey is long and perilous, I've heard there lies untainted land—a last hope for humanity."
Whether such a place truly exists is still uncertain. Luo Shanhe, though reluctant to dampen everyone's spirits, acknowledges that no one can definitively answer whether the Dark Side of the Moon Safe Zone actually exists—at least not at this moment.
