When I woke up again, I found myself lying in bed, wearing a new set of clothes.
I noticed the Stinky Taoist sitting beside me, and my anger flared. I kicked him twice and shouted, "Hey, Stinky Taoist, did you change my clothes?"
To my surprise, his ears turned red, which was quite amusing.
I reached out to touch his ear, but he quickly swatted my hand away and said seriously, "Miss, please have some dignity."
Confused, I replied, "What dignity should a fox spirit have?"
He seemed taken aback by my words, looking at me in disbelief. "Do you even know what you're saying?"
I responded confidently, "Of course I do! I'm a fox spirit. Do fox spirits need dignity?"
Furrowing his brow, he stood up and said earnestly, "Though you are a demon, demons have their own pride. If you want humans to respect you, then stop doing these things."
I remained puzzled. "Why should I care if humans respect me?"
The Stinky Taoist fell silent for some reason.
As I stared at his face, memories of being injured by the Cat Demon flooded back to me.
I immediately jumped out of bed and angrily questioned him, "Stinky Taoist, what was that about yesterday? You actually made me act as a shield! Do you know that was a thousand-year-old Cat Demon?"
The Stinky Taoist appeared somewhat embarrassed, clasping his hands together in apology. "I’m sorry. Yesterday was an emergency, and the other demons, having committed sins of killing, were all extinguished by my Demon Capture Bag."
"Demon Capture Bag?" I pondered for a moment, recalling the bag he had used to capture me earlier. I glanced at the golden bag at his waist and said angrily, "Are you saying this bag can extinguish the souls of our demon kind? Then why did you capture me?"
The Stinky Taoist quickly apologized and explained, "The demons I previously captured were all deeply sinful beings, and they were all extinguished by the Demon Capture Bag. Only those with pure spirits are spared from its wrath."
"Oh, so your plan is to capture all of us demons, and only those who haven’t committed murder can come out alive? Is that what you mean?" My anger grew as I spoke.
I had just descended the mountain when this Taoist indiscriminately captured me. After being released, I was injured by the Cat Demon. All of this trouble stemmed from the Stinky Taoist.
The Stinky Taoist looked uncomfortable and paused before saying, "Miss, I apologize. Due to the Cat Demon’s mischief, many men here have perished due to their essence being drained. That’s why I mistakenly thought you were..."
"Enough," I interrupted him. "I know what you mean without you finishing. Just because we fox spirits are often accused of draining men’s essence doesn’t mean all fox spirits should be treated as criminals. I am not like those other fox spirits; I am a Little Spirit Fox with my own life and upbringing."
I raised my voice, determined to make sure this Stinky Taoist remembered my words.
Perhaps intimidated by my tone, the Stinky Taoist stared at me wide-eyed for a long moment, seemingly lost in thought.
Afterward, to make up for his previous mistake towards me, the Stinky Taoist agreed to accompany me in searching for my benefactor.
As for the clues about my benefactor, my aunt informed me that he is a Taoist in this life. Coincidentally, he is a fellow disciple of this Stinky Taoist and is currently at Qingcheng Mountain Taoist Temple.
"Hey, Rong Youdao, what’s with that mask under Qingcheng Mountain? It looks somewhat like something from our demon world and resembles the appearance of the Black Wolf Demon from Azure Wolf Mountain."
I held a mask with a black wolf design from a small stall, intrigued as I put it on my face. I leaned closer to Rong Youdao, blinking my eyes and asking him.
As for Rong Youdao, he was naturally the one known as the Stinky Taoist.
"This is our Qingcheng Mountain's annual Ghost Festival. Everyone chooses a mask to wear and participates in the exorcism ceremony, symbolizing the expulsion of all evil spirits and monsters."
Rong Youdao patiently answered my question, but just as he finished speaking, he suddenly stared at me, falling silent in an instant.
I smiled gently, slowly removing the mask and leaning slightly closer to his face, my breath soft like orchids. "Do you think a beautiful monster like me needs to be driven away?"
Rong Youdao seemed startled, as if he had been burned. He awkwardly turned away, reaching for a mask with a white fox design from the stall and putting it on his face. Trying to appear calm, he said, "I don't know if you're beautiful or not, but someone like you, who has never committed murder, is still welcome here at Qingcheng Mountain."
