The footsteps in the distance grew louder, and reinforcements from the Obsidian Society were almost upon us. Fei Wan and I exchanged a glance, silently nodding in agreement.
"Run!" I shouted as I grabbed Wu Mingyuan, dragging him towards another exit of the basement.
Fei Wan followed closely behind, her beast form transforming into a streak of white light, vigilantly guarding our rear.
We ran frantically, the angry shouts of our pursuers echoing behind us like a pack of hungry wolves catching the scent of prey. Wu Mingyuan was being dragged along like a dead dog, groaning in pain.
"Don't even think about escaping!" came a furious shout from behind, followed by the roar of a beast that rattled our eardrums.
I glanced back and saw a black beast, roughly the size of a small truck, lunging towards us. Its eyes glowed red with a bloodthirsty gleam, and its sharp claws sliced through the air with a chilling glint.
At that critical moment, a burst of flames suddenly descended from above, as if divine punishment had been bestowed upon us, striking the black beast with precision.
" Xiao Hui!" I exclaimed in surprise, my heart aching at the sight.
Though severely injured, Xiao Hui still managed to fly over. Its eyes were filled with determination, as if to say, "Even if I die, I'm taking someone down with me!"
A warmth spread through my chest, mingled with guilt. It was all my fault; I had put Xiao Hui in such a dangerous position.
"Go! I'll hold them off!" Fei Wan shouted. Her beast had transformed into a white light as well, fighting alongside Xiao Hui with an air of desperation.
I gritted my teeth, knowing this wasn't the time for sentimentality. Dragging the scum that was Wu Mingyuan, I continued to run forward.
Finally, we burst out of the basement and into the open air. The blinding sunlight made it hard for us to see, like prisoners who had been locked away in darkness for too long.
At that moment, a powerful aura suddenly enveloped the entire area, as if the world itself was trembling. I looked around warily and saw a massive vortex appear in the sky, threatening to swallow everything whole.
"This is... the ritual of the Obsidian Society?" I whispered in astonishment, a sense of foreboding rising within me.
Wu Mingyuan suddenly burst into maniacal laughter, like a madman. "Hahaha! You are so naive! Do you think capturing me will stop the Obsidian Society's plans? Fools!"
I grabbed him by the collar, wanting nothing more than to smash that detestable face of his. "Tell me! What do you want?"
Wu Mingyuan grinned wickedly, madness flickering in his eyes. "To open the gateway to another dimension and gain supreme power! Now, it’s too late! You ants are destined to be crushed!"
At that moment, Fei Yan and two strange beasts rushed out. She saw the anomaly in the sky and her expression changed drastically. "Not good! They are going to open the Dimension Gate!"
My heart sank. Were my parents' sacrifices all for nothing? No, I would not allow that!
"Go to hell!" I roared, feeling the energy within me surge again. The power of the Crimson Heart surged through my body; I felt as if I was about to ignite, transforming into an unquenchable flame.
" Xiao Hui, Fei Wan, follow me!" I shouted. "We will stop this disaster together! Even if we die, we will drag these bastards down to hell with us!"
We charged toward the vortex in the sky, the air around us distorting from the intense heat. Wu Mingyuan was left behind, his eyes filled with unwillingness and fear, like a discarded rag doll.
Just as we were about to reach the vortex, a powerful force suddenly pulled us in. Instinctively, I grabbed Fei Wan's hand with one hand while tightly holding onto Xiao Hui with the other.
In that instant of crossing dimensions, I seemed to see my parents' figures. They smiled at me, their eyes filled with pride. At that moment, everything suddenly made sense.
"Mom... Dad..." I murmured, tears welling up in my eyes.
Suddenly, a powerful energy erupted from within me. I felt completely merged with Xiao Hui, my strength multiplying exponentially. In that moment, I felt as if I had become the most powerful being in this world.
With a loud bang, the Dimension Gate collapsed under our combined efforts. It felt as if the entire world had come to a standstill in that moment.
When we regained consciousness, we found ourselves lying on a patch of grass on the outskirts of the university town. The sunlight gently bathed us, making it seem as if everything had just been a nightmare.
"Did we... succeed?" Fei Wan asked weakly, uncertainty lacing her voice.
I glanced down at Xiao Hui, who was peacefully asleep in my arms, breathing steadily. A smile of relief spread across my face. "Yes, we did. Their wicked scheme has been completely shattered."
In that moment, I finally understood the meaning of my parents' sacrifice. They had given their lives to protect this world, and now it was our turn to carry on their legacy.
"Fei Wan," I turned to her, looking earnestly into her eyes, "let's continue to protect this world together, shall we? Though this path is bound to be fraught with challenges, with you by my side, I fear nothing."
Fei Wan smiled and nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. "Yes, together. Even if it means facing mountains of blades and seas of fire, I'll stand by you."
Xiao Hui stirred awake, nuzzling my hand and letting out a soft chirp. I gently stroked its head, warmth flooding my heart.
Under the sunlight, we exchanged smiles. Though the road ahead was long, I knew that as long as we stood united, nothing could frighten us. Those dark forces wishing to destroy this world would ultimately be reduced to ashes beneath our light.
This was not the end; it was a new beginning. Our Rebirth Path had only just begun. This time, we would protect the peace of this world with even greater strength.
Looking toward the distant city, determination ignited within me. Obsidian Society, just wait. One day, I will completely shatter your schemes and avenge my parents. This world will ultimately return to the light!
