On the afternoon of February 28, 2015, a man and a woman arrived at the police station in Huize County to report a case.
The man stated that his uncle, Cui Tian, had lost contact with his family since October 2014. It had been nearly six months without any news.
Accompanying him was a woman named Fan Xiu, who had lived with Cui Tian.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that Cui Tian had been working away but would always return home for the Spring Festival. However, this year he not only failed to come home but also couldn’t be reached by phone. His nephew began to suspect that his uncle was missing.
But Fan Xiu did not share this view. She claimed that Cui Tian had simply gone to Beijing for work and might be busy, which was why he hadn't returned.
According to Fan Xiu, in 2014, Cui Tian suddenly told her that he was going out to find work. Faced with this unexpected farewell, Fan Xiu had long since grown accustomed to such situations.
The day after Cui Tian left home, he called Fan Xiu to say that he had arrived in Beijing and found a job.
Since that time, Cui Tian had not called Fan Xiu again, but this last conversation made her feel that he had not gone missing.
The police found the case somewhat strange based on the descriptions from both parties. It was true that Cui Tian had not contacted his family for six months, yet Fan Xiu seemed unconcerned and even strongly opposed the idea of Cui Tian being missing, which raised suspicions among the officers.

Hearing this, Zhang Bin's legs became weak and his body began to lose control, so he quickly resigned and returned to his hometown the next day. After Zhang Bin returned home, he thought about it and felt that something was wrong. He was afraid that he might be implicated in the future, so he had to report it anonymously. Although he knew that Fan Xiu and Li had killed Cui Tian, he did not know who the man surnamed Li was, nor did he know that Cui Tian was in that Water Cell. When the police found Fan Xiu again and asked to see her Water Cell, Fan Xiu took the initiative to lead the police to check every Water Cell in her home, but after checking, there was no clue. After the inspection, Fan Xiu also took the initiative to invite the police to have dinner at his home.
Although the police did not find the body, they became more and more suspicious of Fan Xiu. Since Fan Xiu took the initiative to lead the police to search her own Water Cell, she must have known that there was no body in the Water Cell, and perhaps she did not hide the body in her home. Two of the Water Cells were open, and only one was sealed with cement. After the police opened the Water Cell, they smelled an indescribable stench. After salvaging by technicians, a skeleton-like body was found in this Water Cell. Through DNA testing, the deceased was Cui Tian who had been missing for half a year. After the suspect Fan Xiu was brought to the police station, under the police interrogation, Fan Xiu admitted that he had killed his husband Cui Tian and hid the body in the Water Cell. According to Fan Xiu, in October 2014, he and Cui Tian quarreled again over buying a cow. During the quarrel, Fan Xiu picked up a hammer next to him and beat Cui Tian to death. Fearing that the matter would be exposed, she threw Cui Tian's body into the Water Cell. But there is a big gap between what Fan Xiu said and what the informant said, because Fan Xiu did not mention the man surnamed Li, and Cui Tian was about 1.7 meters tall and strong. She, a weak woman, obviously could not beat him. And did she have the ability to throw the body to the Water Cell 1 kilometer away by herself? This is obviously impossible.
Under further questioning by the police, Fan Xiu claimed that Zhang Bin was involved in the crime with her, which raised some doubts among the investigators. If Zhang Bin had committed the crime alongside her, would he really risk reporting it?
Moreover, the police discovered that Zhang Bin and Fan Xiu had met in October 2014, while Cui Tian had already gone missing by that time. This led them to conclude that Zhang Bin did not have an alibi for the time of the crime.
Why did Fan Xiu keep lying? What was she trying to hide?
Upon investigating local customs, the police learned that a man with the surname Li might not necessarily be named Li. There was a local tradition where a groom must return to his original family name within three generations, meaning he might not actually carry the surname Li.
Based on this lead, the police identified a man named Wang Yibo and brought him to the station. During questioning, Wang Yibo confirmed that he had indeed been at the scene of the incident but denied any involvement in the crime. Through their testimonies, the police pieced together the truth behind the case.
On the night of the incident, Fan Xiu had invited Wang Yibo over to her home. After dinner, they got into another argument about Cui Tian's cattle purchase. Initially, Wang Yibo thought it was just a typical marital dispute, but then Fan Xiu picked up a small hammer and struck Cui Tian on the head multiple times, resulting in his immediate death.
Wang Yibo was left stunned by what he witnessed.
Afterward, Fan Xiu offered Wang Yibo 7,000 yuan to help move the body. At that moment, he felt he couldn't refuse her request, so together they disposed of Cui Tian's body in a water cell.
Although Fan Xiu claimed that her argument with her husband was about buying cattle, she immediately sought out new relationships after killing him—relationships with multiple men. The true reasons behind her actions likely remained known only to Fan Xiu herself.
