Li Lin clenched his fists, his gaze darting back and forth between Xiao Xing and Liya, a battle raging within him. "I won't let you hurt them."
The Falcon let out a cold laugh, slowly raising the gun in his hand. "You have no choice."
At that critical moment, a harsh metallic scraping sound suddenly echoed from outside the cave. The Falcon spun around sharply, and a shadow rushed toward him with astonishing speed.
Li Lin's pupils constricted as he instinctively shielded Liya and Xiao Xing behind him. "Be careful!"
The shadow collided with the Falcon like lightning, and the two immediately became entangled in a fierce struggle. Seizing the opportunity, Li Lin grabbed Liya and dashed toward the cave entrance.
"Run!" he shouted, with Xiao Xing closely following.
The three stumbled out of the cave, just as the Falcon's furious roar echoed behind them. "Don't let them escape!"
Gunfire erupted in the darkness, bullets whizzing past their ears. Li Lin gritted his teeth and sprinted forward without hesitation.
Liya suddenly stumbled, and Li Lin quickly steadied her. "Hang on!"
Xiao Xing emitted a sharp cry, her body glowing faintly as an invisible energy barrier formed around the three of them. Bullets struck it with a ringing sound.
Li Lin's heart jolted as he glanced at Xiao Xing on his shoulder. "Good job, buddy!"
They stumbled into a pile of ruins, temporarily evading their pursuers behind the cover of crumbling walls. Li Lin cautiously surveyed their surroundings, ensuring they were safe for the moment before letting out a long breath.
"Are you both okay?" He turned to check on Liya's injuries.
Liya weakly shook her head. "I'm fine, just a bit exhausted." Her gaze fell on Xiao Xing before shifting back to Li Lin. "What the Falcon said earlier... is it true?"
Li Lin closed his eyes in pain. "I really don't remember." He looked at Xiao Xing, guilt filling his eyes. "But if it is true, then I owe Xiao Xing an explanation."
After a moment of silence, Liya gritted her teeth. "Regardless, we are a team now." She grasped Li Lin's hand firmly. "We will protect Xiao Xing together and uncover the truth."
Li Lin looked at Liya with gratitude. "Thank you."
Just then, a cold female voice suddenly rang out from behind them. "It seems you've run into some trouble."
Li Lin suddenly turned around, only to see a tall woman stepping out from the shadows. Her short hair framed her sharp, knife-like gaze. "I am Nightingale."
Li Lin stood protectively in front of Liya and Xiao Xing. "Who are you? What do you want?"
Nightingale chuckled lightly. "Relax, if I wanted to harm you, I wouldn't have saved you just now."
Li Lin was taken aback. "It was you?"
Nightingale nodded. "That's right." Her gaze fell on Xiao Xing. "It seems what the Falcon said is true; this Starwing Beast is indeed extraordinary."
Li Lin instinctively shielded Xiao Xing. "Who exactly are you? Why did you save us?"
Nightingale paused for a moment before responding. "Because we have a common enemy." She locked eyes with Li Lin. "The forces behind the Falcon are more terrifying than you can imagine."
A heaviness settled in Li Lin's heart. "What do you mean?"
Nightingale shook her head. "This isn't the place to talk." She scanned the surroundings warily. "I know a safe location; follow me."
Li Lin hesitated for a moment, glancing at Liya, who nodded. "It seems we have no choice."
The three followed Nightingale through the maze-like ruins until they reached a hidden basement. Nightingale closed a heavy metal door and turned on a dim light.
"Now we can talk properly," Nightingale said as she sat down, her gaze sweeping over the three of them. "First, you should know that Li Lin did not intend to hide his past."
Li Lin gasped. "You know my past?"
Nightingale nodded. "I used to be an intelligence officer for the military." She pulled out a data chip from her pocket. "This contains the truth about the operation you were involved in."
Li Lin trembled as he took the chip. "What... what is this about?"
Nightingale sighed. "Ten years ago, the military discovered the existence of the Starwing Beast. They believed this creature had immense military value and sent a squad for a covert investigation."
"And you, Li Lin, were part of that squad."
Li Lin felt dizzy as memories flooded back like a tide. "I... I remember now." He closed his eyes in pain. "We found the Starwing Beast, but the operation failed."
Nightingale nodded slightly. "That's right. That operation led to the deaths of most of the Starwing Beasts, and only one cub managed to escape."
Li Lin looked at Xiao Xing, guilt filling his eyes. "Is that you, little one?"
Xiao Xing softly called out and nuzzled Li Lin's hand.
Nightingale continued, "But this is just the beginning of the conspiracy. The higher-ups in the military plan to use the abilities of the Starwing Beasts to control the wasteland, and the Falcons are their pawns."
Li Lin clenched his fists. "What should we do?"
Nightingale stood up. "We need to stop them." She turned to Li Lin. "But first, you need to regain your teammates' trust and demonstrate enough strength."
Li Lin glanced at Liya and Xiao Xing. "What... what should I do?"
Just then, hurried footsteps echoed from outside. Nightingale suddenly stood up. "They've found us!"
Li Lin alertly rose, positioning himself in front of Liya and Xiao Xing. "What should we do?"
Nightingale calmly said, "I have a plan, but I need you all to cooperate fully." She looked at Li Lin. "Now is your time to prove yourself."
Li Lin took a deep breath, his gaze resolute. "I'm ready."
