The Starwing Beast Cub suddenly let out a sharp cry, jolting Li Lin awake as he alertly scanned his surroundings.
"What’s wrong, little one?" Li Lin whispered, quickly checking his gear.
Xiao Xing squirmed anxiously in his arms, its eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. Following its gaze, Li Lin vaguely saw several shadowy figures rapidly approaching.
"Damn it, have we been spotted?" Li Lin muttered through gritted teeth as he pulled Liya up. "We need to get out of here now."
Liya nodded and swiftly packed up the medical kit. "Where do we go?"
Li Lin looked around and pointed to a dilapidated building complex. "There. We can take cover for a while."
As the three of them entered the ruins, gunfire erupted behind them. Bullets struck the walls, sending debris flying.
"Raiders!" Li Lin cursed. "How did they find us?"
Liya pulled a makeshift handgun from the medical kit and handed it to Li Lin. "We need to fight back."
Li Lin took the gun, hesitating for a moment. Shadows of the past resurfaced, but Xiao Xing gently nudged his hand, as if giving him strength.
"Cover me," Li Lin said, taking a deep breath and forcing a bitter smile.
He leaned out and quickly aimed before firing. With years of combat experience, every shot from Li Lin found its mark. The raiders' advance was temporarily halted, but they soon adjusted their tactics, spreading out to encircle them.
At that moment, Xiao Xing suddenly broke free from Li Lin's embrace and charged at one of the raiders.
"No!" Li Lin shouted, trying to stop it.
To their surprise, Xiao Xing's body suddenly emitted a faint glow, forming an energy shield. Bullets struck the shield with a clattering sound but failed to harm Xiao Xing in the slightest.
"What is this..." Liya exclaimed, staring at the scene in disbelief.
Li Lin was also taken aback but quickly regained his composure. "Now's our chance!"
He dashed out from cover, swiftly closing in on the enemies. With a few decisive moves, Li Lin subdued two of the raiders.
Just then, a sharp gunshot pierced the night air. One of the raiders, who had been preparing to ambush Li Lin, fell to the ground.
"Looks like I arrived just in time," a deep voice emerged from the darkness.
Li Lin raised his gun warily, aiming in the direction of the voice. "Who are you?"
A tall figure stepped out from the shadows. "Royce, member of the Beast Federation." His gaze fell on Xiao Xing. "It seems the rumors are true; the Starwing Beast has indeed appeared."
Li Lin instinctively positioned himself in front of Xiao Xing. "What do you want?"
Royce raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "Don't be tense; our goals are the same. Protecting this little one, right?"
Li Lin remained cautious. "Why should I trust you?"
Royce shrugged. "Because if I wanted to take it, I wouldn't have saved you just now."
Li Lin exchanged a glance with Liya. Royce made a valid point, but they still couldn't fully trust him.
"What do you know?" Li Lin asked.
Royce sighed. "I don't know much, but I can tell that this little guy is very dangerous." He pointed at Xiao Xing. "If its abilities are misused, the consequences would be unimaginable."
Li Lin frowned. "Dangerous? It saved my life."
"Exactly because its power is so great, it needs to be properly protected," Royce explained. "Our goal at the Beast Federation is to protect special creatures like it, preventing them from falling into the hands of those with ill intentions."
Li Lin fell silent. He looked down at Xiao Xing, feeling a conflict within himself. He knew Royce was right, but he was reluctant to let go.
At that moment, Xiao Xing suddenly walked over to Royce and gently nudged his hand with its head.
Royce was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled softly. "It seems it likes me."
Li Lin watched this scene, feeling some of his reservations ease. "Maybe... we can work together."
Royce nodded. "A wise choice." He extended his hand. "Welcome to the Beast Federation, Li Lin."
Li Lin hesitated for a moment but ultimately took Royce's hand. "Our goals are aligned. To protect Xiao Xing and uncover the truth."
Just then, a roar of engines echoed from a distance. Royce's expression changed. "Damn it, they've sent reinforcements. We need to leave immediately."
Li Lin picked up Xiao Xing and quickly followed Royce as they made their escape. He knew that his choice would completely alter the course of his future. But at that moment, all he could do was move forward, no matter what awaited them ahead.
