Li Lin and Liya walked along the streets of the abandoned city, with Xing'er closely following behind them.
The desolate scene sent chills down their spines, with crumbling walls and decaying car wrecks scattered everywhere.
"Are you sure this road is safe?" Li Lin asked, glancing around warily.
Liya nodded. "I've been here before; this path is relatively hidden."
Li Lin frowned. "You mean the Technological Ruins are nearby?"
"No, we need to head a bit further northwest," Liya explained. "But we have to resupply here first."
The two of them crossed a narrow alley and arrived at an open square.
In the center of the square stood a dilapidated fountain, surrounded by various pieces of debris.
"This is it," Liya said, stopping in her tracks. "This used to be a trading market."
Li Lin surveyed the area, noting its desolation. "It doesn't look like much now."
Liya smiled faintly. "It may seem that way on the surface, but actually..."
She approached the fountain and pressed down on a loose stone.
Suddenly, the base of the fountain slowly shifted aside, revealing a concealed entrance.
Li Lin stared in astonishment at the scene. "Looks like you're quite familiar with this place."
Liya's smile turned bittersweet. "I used to be."
The two of them, along with Xing'er, squeezed through the entrance and followed a narrow passageway.
At the end of the passage was a spacious underground space filled with various shelves and boxes.
"Welcome, esteemed guests," a hoarse voice echoed from the darkness.
Li Lin and Liya turned cautiously, seeing a short man emerge from the shadows.
"Long time no see, old friend," Liya nodded in acknowledgment.
"Ah, it's you, Liya," the man grinned slyly. "I thought you were dead."
Li Lin frowned, "Who is this?"
"Just call me Fox," the man extended his hand. "I am the master of this place, and also... an information dealer."
Li Lin did not shake his hand, merely nodding coldly.
Fox withdrew his hand, his gaze falling on Xing'er. "Oh? What an interesting little thing this is."
Li Lin instinctively stepped in front of Xing'er. "It's none of your business."
Fox chuckled lightly. "No need to be so tense, my friend." He turned to Liya. "What brings you here?"
"Supplies," Liya replied briefly. "And information."
A glint flashed in Fox's eyes. "Oh? What kind of information?"
"About the Technological Ruins," Liya said in a lowered voice.
Fox's expression suddenly turned serious. "Are you sure you want to ask about that?"
Liya nodded. "We need to know the current situation there."
Fox pondered for a moment before saying, "Follow me."
He led the three to a hidden corner and pulled out a strange device.
"What is this?" Li Lin asked warily.
"A device that can unlock the potential of the Starwing Beast," Fox explained. "It comes from the Technological Ruins."
Upon hearing this, Xing'er let out a sharp cry and trembled slightly.
Li Lin looked at it in surprise. "Xing'er, what's wrong?"
The fox revealed a meaningful smile. "It seems sensitive to this device."
Liya frowned. "This thing could be very dangerous."
"But it might also be the key to understanding the truth about Xing'er," Li Lin pondered.
Just then, a faint sound of footsteps approached.
Li Lin instantly became alert and turned sharply, spotting a shadow quietly drawing closer.
"Watch out!" he shouted as he lunged toward Liya.
An arrow whizzed past his ear, embedding itself in the wall behind him.
"Damn it, it's a scout from the raiders!" the fox cursed, quickly hiding behind a pile of boxes.
Li Lin pulled Liya and Xing'er behind a pillar. "How did they find us here?"
Liya's face turned pale. "They might have followed us."
More arrows whistled through the air as Li Lin scanned the area for an escape route.
"Fox, is there a back door?" he called out loudly.
"There is!" the fox pointed in one direction. "But we need to deal with this trouble first."
Li Lin took a deep breath, recalling his combat skills from the past.
He quickly analyzed the enemy's positions and then dashed out from cover.
With a roll, he evaded the incoming arrows while picking up an iron rod from the ground.
Li Lin agilely jumped onto a stack of boxes, gaining the high ground, and accurately hurled the iron rod at the enemy.
With a loud thud, the scout fell to the ground.
Li Lin rushed forward and kicked away the scout's weapon.
"Speak! How did you find us here?" he demanded sternly.
The scout coughed several times, blood trickling from his mouth. "You... you can't escape."
Before he could finish speaking, the scout suddenly bit down on the poison hidden in his teeth, and soon after, he gasped his last breath.
Li Lin frowned; the situation was more complicated than he had imagined.
"We need to leave here quickly," Liya said urgently.
The fox nodded. "Follow me."
He led the three of them through a concealed passage and emerged above ground.
"Listen," the fox said seriously, "I can tell you the exact location of the Technological Ruins."
"But it's very dangerous. Are you sure you want to go?"
Li Lin and Liya exchanged a glance and then nodded firmly.
The fox sighed. "Alright, but I have one condition."
"What condition?" Li Lin asked warily.
"Let me join you," the fox said. "I'm very interested in the technology there."
Li Lin hesitated; he wasn't sure whether to trust this mysterious merchant.
But they did need a guide who understood the situation.
"What do you think?" he asked Liya.
Liya bit her lip. "We have no choice."
Li Lin took a deep breath. "Okay, it's a deal."
The fox revealed a mysterious smile. "Then let's get ready to set off, my friends."
"Trust me, when you see what's there, you'll be amazed."
Li Lin looked at Xing'er, her heart filled with questions.
What would this adventure bring?
Would they find the truth in the Technological Ruins?
More importantly, would they make it back alive?
