When Lin Lian was summoned, his brows were tightly furrowed, and his expression remained dark and somber, tinged with a hint of displeasure and coldness.
He strode forward, his garments fluttering gently in the wind, exuding an indescribable sense of oppression.
However, at that moment, his eyes were clear, unlike before when they were clouded by hatred and pain. He seemed unlikely to act irrationally, which allowed Yu Youwei to breathe a slight sigh of relief.
She raised her hand slightly, brushing back the strands of hair from her forehead, then picked up the teapot. Her slender fingers grasped the handle delicately and gracefully as she poured hot tea for both of them.
"You seem to enjoy coming to this lakeside tea pavilion," Yu Youwei said softly, her voice flowing like a gentle stream.
"Just say what you need to say." Lin Lian's narrow eyes held no warmth; he turned his head away from Yu Youwei, his profile appearing somewhat rigid and indifferent. He spoke impatiently toward the lake's surface, his tone carrying a chill that seemed to ripple across the calm water.
Yu Youwei let out a faint sigh, the sound barely perceptible as it drifted into the air. Slowly, she retrieved a letter from her sleeve, her movements hesitant yet resolute. She placed the letter on the table, her gaze revealing a complex mix of emotions.
"You know, I shouldn't be here."
"That day with Xi Yu, she could have survived. Yesterday, when I returned to the brothel to collect my things, I found a small dagger hidden beneath the bedding. When someone lies on the bed, that dagger is easily within reach."
Lin Lian's tense body suddenly stiffened; he paused in surprise before turning his head sharply. His eyes widened slightly in disbelief.
Yu Youwei's lips curled into a bittersweet smile. "See? You truly didn't know. Xi Yu left that dagger there, although it certainly wasn't meant to harm you. But when you suffocated her with a pillow that day, she didn’t use the dagger against you. I don’t know how much she loved you—enough that even when you were killing her, she couldn’t bring herself to fight back."
Lin Lian's lips trembled like fragile leaves in the wind; his face gradually turned pale as paper. The once cold expression now bore a mixture of shock and intertwined pain.
This letter was written by her to Wangyue.
She knew from the very beginning that your presence beside her was not out of a desire to preserve life, but rather for revenge. She also knew you would kill her, which is why she wrote a letter to her Husband, instructing him never to harm you after her death. She accepted her fate willingly, even if it meant atoning for the lives of your family that she had taken.
"Stop talking," Lin Lian suddenly stood up, his movement so forceful that the chair behind him toppled over with a loud crash, echoing sharply in the tranquil lakeside tea pavilion.
"Her arrogance and cruelty were innate, but her reckless love was because of you."
"Stop it," Lin Lian retreated two steps, his face pale and his steps slightly frantic, as if he were desperately trying to escape something.
"And what about you?" Yu Youwei paused, lifting her head slightly to meet Lin Lian's gaze with unwavering determination. Finally, she threw down her trump card, "You are a rational person. Why do you still want to kill me knowing I am not Xi Yu? Can you honestly say that your desire to kill me isn't tied to wanting to bring her soul back?"
"Stop talking!" Lin Lian finally lost control and shouted, his voice reverberating across the lake and startling a few resting water birds.
A glimmer of tears flashed in his slender eyes, sparkling in the sunlight. He pressed his lips together and turned away in a hurry, his silhouette appearing somewhat desolate and lonely.
"Sigh..." Yu Youwei watched him disappear into the distance and gently sighed, her eyes filled with regret and helplessness.
Such a pair of people who loved each other deeply were separated by a wrong beginning; it was truly a pity.
"Xue..." A familiar voice came from behind.
Yu Youwei's body stiffened. As she slowly turned around, a pleasing smile instantly spread across her face, her eyes crescent-shaped and her lips curving upward with a hint of caution.
"Wangyue, you, you, you’re awake? How did you get out?"
Yu Youwei sensed that Wangyue no longer called her Xi Yu. To distinguish between them, the name Snow would now belong solely to her.
However, that wasn't the main point right now, because Wangyue's face clearly displayed the words "I'm jealous." He pouted slightly, his eyes filled with a hint of grievance and dissatisfaction, his brows furrowed like a neglected puppy.
"If I didn't wake up, I'd miss you meeting with another man..." Wangyue sulked as he sat beside her, arms crossed, looking like a forsaken dog.
Yu Youwei tilted her head and watched him for a moment before suddenly bursting into laughter, her giggle as clear and sweet as silver bells. Blushing, she leaned closer to him, her slightly flushed cheeks resembling ripe apples, and gently pecked his lips in a soft and shy manner.
"Wangyue, are you still going to the study to read tonight?"
Wangyue paused for a moment, as if gradually understanding what she meant. His expression shifted from surprise to a radiant smile that shone like the warm sun of spring.
He leaned in slightly and kissed her lips, that tender kiss seemed to convey endless love and affection.
"Silly, I've already finished reading. Today... I just want to see you..."
