Zhiqing had originally intended to find a tool for defense, but inadvertently pushed open another room. Inside, an unseen threat lurked, and the air was thick with a foul, metallic scent of blood. The entire room felt like a chilling torture chamber, cold and eerie.
"We should get out of here! This place is so strange," Ziya's voice buzzed loudly, echoing in the empty room as if she were speaking into a microphone before an audience. The echo startled the four of them, making them exchange glances as they hesitated to investigate the trail of dark brown blood leading deeper into the room. What could be inside that small space? Were there dead bodies or perhaps someone still alive, suffering and waiting for their rescue?
Though the distance seemed close, every step felt far away. With each movement, they felt an overwhelming pressure that seemed to weigh down on their necks and bodies.
This pressure quickened their heartbeats, leaving their skin prickling with tension as their minds raced with speculation about what they might see. All four sensed that something awaited them in the small room, yet they couldn't suppress their innate curiosity to uncover the truth.
Zhiqing reached out slowly to grasp the doorknob, while Ziya felt her heart leap into her throat. They knew this was no ordinary place; every inch held different dangers and threats.
Just as Zhiqing's hand brushed against the doorknob, the light suddenly extinguished without a sound, plunging them into darkness. Panic ensued among the four.
"Ziya!" Zhiqing shouted in a flurry as she grabbed onto someone nearby. At that moment, a raspy laugh echoed from somewhere in the darkness. The chilling sound sent shivers down their spines; each person felt an eerie presence closing in around them. No one dared to make another sound; they could only fumble in the dark, trying to hold onto one another.
Zeng Qin realized it was Zhiqing who had grabbed her hand and quickly pulled away, straining her eyes to adjust to the darkness in search of Liu Yi.
Liu Yi was already feeling anxious, and with the light gone, his panic intensified. It seemed clear that this place was dangerous. Thinking quickly, he retreated hastily, forgetting about Zeng Qin as he sought to retrace his steps back to the corridor.
Ziya felt someone tap her shoulder and assumed it was Zhiqing. After a moment of chaos, she calmed down at the thought of Zhiqing being nearby.
Zeng Qin couldn't sense Liu Yi anymore, which filled her with dread. The air around her felt unusually cold as a chilling breeze brushed against her face. Terrified, she let out a piercing scream and stumbled blindly into the corridor lit by flickering lights, running away in panic.
Zhiqing was left bewildered after losing her grip on Zeng Qin when she heard the scream followed by hurried footsteps fading into the distance.
Ziya was startled by the scream, sensing that Zeng Qin must have been terrified, but she had no idea where she was. However, her intuition told her that someone had definitely run out of the house. With that thought in mind, she hurriedly followed the sound of footsteps outside.
"Ziya..." Zhiqing felt her voice echoing in the emptiness, as if there was no one else around. In this dark environment, no matter how hard she tried to see clearly, it was all in vain.
Zeng Qin was running wildly, feeling an eerie laughter coming from behind her. In a panic, she dashed into a room. This room had a bright light, a high-wattage bulb that warmed the space. In the center of the room stood a square iron box, about the length of a person. As Zeng Qin entered, she felt a wave of warmth wash over her, calming her racing heart slightly.
Just then, footsteps approached the door, and Zeng Qin panicked. The walls surrounded her; there was nowhere to hide. She glanced at the iron box on the floor as the footsteps grew closer. Her heart pounded violently, each beat feeling like it might be her last. The tension rose in her throat—who could be outside? If it were the Demon Leader, it would be terrifying. Listening intently to the approaching footsteps, her fearful gaze fixed on the door as it seemed ready to swing open. She stepped back toward the iron box when suddenly, with a 'clunk,' she accidentally triggered a mechanism on it. The lid of the box slowly opened. Without hesitation, Zeng Qin dove inside and lay down within its confines. As soon as she did, the box closed automatically, and a white mist began to emanate from its sides, bringing everything back to silence.
Ziya reached the door of this room but found no trace of Zeng Qin. She cautiously surveyed the interior before entering. In the center stood an iron box resembling a coffin; Zeng Qin was nowhere to be found. Where could she have gone? Was she inside the box?
Ziya circled around the iron box, unsure of its purpose. The corridor led only to this room; all around were walls. She had come here chasing after Zeng Qin; if it were just her alone, she wouldn't have dared to enter this place at all. Other rooms were scattered everywhere else, yet this was the only one here. Examining the iron box closely, Ziya couldn't find any mechanism.
"Ziya..." came Zhiqing's voice from outside.
"Zhiqing." Ziya quickly stepped back to the door and flung it open without hesitation, rushing into Zhiqing's arms for a long embrace.
"Why did you run off without waiting for me? You scared me to death," Zhiqing said anxiously as she cupped Ziya's face in her hands, as if checking for something lost on her features.
"I heard someone running and remembered how timid Zeng Qin is; it had to be her," Ziya explained.
"Where is she?"
"I didn't see her; there was only an iron box in there—nothing else."
"Is it the iron box?" Zhiqing exclaimed, quickly releasing Ziya and stepping into the room.
"That's the one," Ziya said, following him inside and pointing at the iron box.
Zhiqing remained silent. Like Ziya, he circled around the iron box. His gaze fell on a button-like loop on the top of the box, and just as he was about to reach out to press it, a series of hurried breaths came from the doorway. Suddenly, the door swung open with a loud bang, startling Ziya so much that he nearly cried out. When they saw who had entered, both of them let out a slight sigh of relief.
