Finally feeling exhausted from waiting, YaYa yawned and closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep in the trunk of the car. The security guard on duty in the community noticed someone loitering in the parking lot through the surveillance cameras. After checking, he found out that the car belonged to a doctor who frequently visited the area, so he called the landline to inform them.
Liang Chao and his lover Yun Yu were in a deep slumber when they were startled by the guard's words. They quickly threw on some clothes and rushed downstairs, circling around the car. When they discovered that the trunk was not locked, they casually secured it.
As a result, YaYa remained trapped in the trunk for three and a half days. The heat of the weather combined with the exhaust fumes from the car caused her body to decompose rapidly, leading to a foul smell and maggots. If she had been alive, her desperation would have given her enough strength to bend the trunk lid. Perhaps YaYa would never understand how she ended up dead in the trunk of her admired mentor, Liang Chao. If given a chance at rebirth, would she still be so foolish?
Ziya and Severe Cold never imagined that after parting ways in D City, they would meet again under such peculiar circumstances. They exchanged glances, momentarily speechless, feeling as if they were strangers awkwardly trying to maintain politeness.
Although Liang Chao did not bear full responsibility for what happened, he felt a shiver of fear and regret. In front of Ziya, Zhiqing, and Severe Cold, he reflected deeply and decided to return home to apologize to Sun Meng, hoping to rekindle their past warmth. He also recalled a scene he had witnessed at home; Liang Chao was someone who kept everything hidden within himself. Despite having countless questions and fears swirling inside him, he maintained a composed exterior.
"Liang Chao, wait..." Severe Cold called out as he saw Liang Chao attempting to leave. He hurriedly stepped away from Ziya to speak with him.
Ziya and Zhiqing noticed Severe Cold calling Liang Chao over and quickly approached to see what he wanted to say.
"Uh, thank you for coming to testify for me; otherwise, they would have said I couldn't leave the city and that I should be available anytime," Liang Chao said sincerely. He then pulled out a cigarette, offering one to Zhiqing and another to Severe Cold while keeping one for himself, lighting them one by one.
Severe Cold moved his lips but hadn't spoken yet when all of Liang Chao's grateful words came rushing out along with the smoke. He accepted the cigarette but glanced at Ziya and declined her offer to light it. This small gesture touched someone deeply; he remembered his tendency to cough and didn't want to smoke.
Seeing that Severe Cold had no intention of smoking, Zhiqing waved his hand at Liang Chao and also refrained from lighting his cigarette. The three watched as Liang Chao lit his cigarette, noticing his hand trembling slightly.
"Let's find a quiet place! I need to tell you something," Severe Cold said with a serious expression, his cold gaze fixed on the three of them.
"What is it?" Ziya asked anxiously. She thought that Liang Chao should be going home to check on Sun Meng instead; whatever it was couldn’t be more important than two people reconciling.
"I can't; I need to go home immediately. When I returned yesterday, I noticed something was off with her mood. You guys can talk about whatever..." Liang Chao took a deep drag from his cigarette before crushing the remaining half on the ground with his foot as he spoke.
"Go ahead! I'm worried too," Ziya agreed. Zhiqing nodded in agreement, also suggesting that Liang Chao should go back to check on Sun Meng.
"How about this? Liang Chao, you go back and bring Sun Meng out, and we can meet at the De Yi Lou teahouse."
The four of them split into two cars. Ziya sat in Zhiqing's car while Liang Chao headed home to see Sun Meng. Severe Cold, Zhi Qing, and Ziya went to the teahouse to wait for Liang Chao and the others.
As the car glided down the road, images of YaYa's pale face and wriggling maggots kept flashing through Liang Chao's mind. The more he thought about it, the more nauseous he felt; he even sensed something crawling on his neck. He let go of one hand and reached for the uncomfortable spot on his neck. When his fingers touched something soft, small, and cold, his heart raced. Slowly, he grasped the object and nervously brought it closer to his eyes—oh no... it was a fat, wriggling maggot.
With a sudden slam of the brakes, a wave of intense nausea hit him as he quickly flung the maggot away. His car veered off course, and soon after, a traffic officer approached to issue him a ticket.
What a damn hassle! Liang Chao cursed under his breath as he turned the steering wheel back onto the main road. The car continued to glide along, but what used to be a short stretch of road now felt interminable. He had an unsettling feeling that someone else was in the car with him. Liang Chao kept glancing in the rearview mirror and turning to look at the passenger seat beside him.
Whenever he focused straight ahead, he would catch a glimpse of someone out of the corner of his eye—someone dressed in red... But when he turned to look, the seat was empty. This constant turning and fear made him increasingly convinced that there was something in the car—something that was YaYa. She must be in here with him. Thinking back on everything that had happened recently made him feel miserable; he didn't understand why he'd become so reckless lately. After each wild escapade, he sensed something was off, but those fleeting moments were quickly overshadowed by his desire for more thrills.
Sweat poured from every pore of his body, and his palms were slick with perspiration as he gripped the steering wheel tightly. He reached for a towel that Sun Meng had placed near his water cup to wipe his hands. As Liang Chao set the car to autopilot and stretched out his hand toward the towel without looking away from the road, his fingers brushed against something sticky that seemed to be wriggling. Only then did he turn to look. To his horror... the towel was covered in maggots, so tiny they looked like thin white threads; if you weren't paying attention, you wouldn't even notice them.
Stunned and fighting back nausea, he spat out, "Damn it!" He pulled over onto the bus lane and leaned over into the greenery to vomit violently. A loud honk startled him; his heart raced as he realized a bus was approaching from behind. Without time to wipe away the mess at the corner of his mouth, he hurriedly got back into his car and drove away from the bus lane.
This whole ordeal left Liang Chao feeling more exhausted than dealing with women ever could. As he caught sight of his neighborhood ahead, he let out a sigh of relief. He thought about returning home, taking a shower, then picking up Sun Meng so they could clean the car inside and out together.
