Ziya noticed that Sun Meng's spirit was nowhere near what it used to be. Even when they were together, she could sense that Sun Meng was lost in thought, her mind elsewhere. Ziya suspected that Sun Meng was hiding something from her, but she couldn't glean any clues from Sun Meng's demeanor.
"Sun Meng, let's go visit Zhiqing," Ziya suggested, hoping to coax Sun Meng into going to Zhiqing's shop so that Zhiqing could take a look at her and see if something was truly wrong.
"I'm not going," Sun Meng replied with a bitter smile. The memory of Liang Chao's warnings sent a chill through her. She couldn't understand why Liang Chao had such a dislike for Zhiqing. She hesitated to visit Zhiqing's shop, finding excuses to decline every time Ziya invited her.
"Come on, Zhiqing's shop has been renovated, and you haven't seen it yet," Ziya urged, reaching out to pull Sun Meng along. Sun Meng flinched and stepped back quickly, surprising Ziya. "Are you okay? What's going on?" Ziya asked, taken aback by Sun Meng's nervous reaction.
"It's nothing. I just don't want to go."
"Sun Meng, are you hiding something from me?"
"No," Sun Meng said, avoiding Ziya's piercing gaze and lowering her head as if she were a child caught in a mistake facing a teacher's scrutiny.
"Sun Meng, look at me. I'm your friend, your sister. Do you understand?" Ziya insisted, growing anxious as she twisted Sun Meng's arm gently, trying to make her look up.
"Ziya... I feel guilty. I've been pregnant several times and had abortions; they have come looking for me," Sun Meng suddenly blurted out as her emotions spiraled out of control under Ziya's insistence. She shot her head up, fear evident in her eyes as she spoke.
"What are you talking about? That can't be true! You're just overthinking it." Seeing the fear in Sun Meng's eyes sent a shiver down Ziya's spine, and she struggled to steady herself against the sudden wave of fear that surged within her.
"Ziya... they've been haunting me all along. I wake up screaming from nightmares every night, scaring Liang Chao so much that he won't sleep next to me anymore. He says I look terrifying."
"Oh my God, there's nothing there! You're just imagining things. It's okay; everything will pass. Besides, aren't you two getting married at the end of the year?"
"I’m scared, scared that he will leave me again," Sun Meng sobbed, tears streaming down her face as she cried like a heartbroken child.
"Alright, you've been pregnant multiple times. Why didn’t you tell me? You... foolish girl." Ziya, noticing the curious glances from passersby, quickly pulled Sun Meng to the center of the park, beneath a massive Banyan Tree. She took out a tissue to wipe away Sun Meng's tears and asked, "What happened?"
"I wanted those children, but the medication Liang Chao gave me caused me to lose them. He said there would be more children in the future and that it was too early to have them now."
"Why... why did you wait until now to tell me?" Sun Meng's words made Ziya tremble with anger. She hated this love-struck version of Sun Meng, despised Liang Chao for his heartlessness and cunning, and loathed this man's irresponsibility.
"Ziya, help me! They’re always following me, tormenting me," Sun Meng said, her panicked eyes darting around. Seeing her in such distress sent waves of anxiety through Ziya, a chill creeping down her spine.
"No, do you remember what happened back in middle school? It was all fake," Ziya said quickly as she noticed Sun Meng's unstable emotions. She dialed Zhiqing’s number urgently, asking him to come quickly. Since it was Sunday and they had planned to stroll together without driving, they needed Zhiqing to pick them up.
"Don’t call the class monitor! If Liang Chao finds out, he’ll kill me," Sun Meng said, her brows furrowed in fear.
"You need to pull yourself together. I want to see the old Sun Meng again; this version of you makes me look down on you," Ziya said sternly, causing an elderly couple passing by to glance at them for a few seconds before moving on.
"Well, YaYa had an incident at the hospital. She didn’t even know how she got pregnant. When she took the one-time painless abortion pill prescribed by the gynecologist, guess what she expelled?" Sun Meng stopped crying and looked wide-eyed.
"What was it?" Ziya asked, sensing something alarming in Sun Meng’s expression and feeling compelled to understand the situation.
"A hissing creature that looked like one of those monsters from horror movies..." Just then, Sun Meng spotted Zhiqing approaching and immediately fell silent.
Ziya quickly turned around. "Where is your car parked?" She looked at Zhiqing’s tense expression and scanned the area behind him.
Zhiqing saw that Ziya was fine and let out a gentle sigh, as if a heavy burden had been lifted from his shoulders. However, when he caught sight of Sun Meng's tear-streaked face, his heart tightened. She looked dull and lifeless, and he thought to himself: something is wrong with her...
"What's wrong with Sun Meng at the station parking lot?" Zhiqing asked, glancing hurriedly at Sun Meng, who was crying on Ziya's shoulder, and noticing several shopping bags on the ground.
"She's... fine. Just help me pick up these things and we'll talk in your car," Ziya replied, handing over the items they had just bought at the supermarket to Zhiqing. Then, he helped Sun Meng up and headed toward the parking lot.
Severe Cold and Liang Chao burst into laughter, each understanding the unspoken thoughts of the other. They both had their own concerns as they continuously drank coffee, adding sugar, then heading to the restroom.
YaYa observed their actions from the side, puzzled about the relationship between this man from out of town and her master Liang Chao. If they were friends, why did they seem to insult each other in conversation? Master Liang Chao appeared somewhat more sinister compared to Severe Cold, who seemed more mature and straightforward. It was obvious he had come from military service; what was he doing here?
"Do you like that girl from earlier?" Liang Chao asked as he noticed Severe Cold seemingly searching for something, stirring his coffee cup while looking at him.
"Not bad; she's spicy—great figure, attractive looks. Do you know her?" Severe Cold shifted the topic, trying to pry into Liang Chao's relationship with YaYa. His ulterior motive for getting close to YaYa was to find out about Ziya's whereabouts, but Liang Chao had been evasive about it.
"Oh, that girl? I'm a regular here; I don't know her personally yet. But if I come around more often, I will eventually," Liang Chao said nonchalantly while fiddling with a lighter he claimed was a gift from a woman.
"Right, this is a paradise for men. Speaking of which, guys have their tastes while women can be quite flirtatious. The beauties here are acceptable," Severe Cold remarked pointedly, recalling YaYa's greedy expression when he entered—it made him feel sick.
"A deep compliment—care to explain?"
