Ziya, filled with indignation, noticed Sun Meng's dejected mood. The frustration within her was hard to release, and she decided that she had to visit the clinic no matter what.
Under the scorching summer sun, the relentless rays forced people on the streets to seek refuge under the Banyan Tree, where they played and cooled off. Some retreated indoors to enjoy air conditioning and take a nap, while others, unwilling to spend on expensive electricity, lingered in the supermarket's cool air.
Inside the clinic, the fan whirred incessantly, stirring up prescription slips on the desk and causing the wall calendar to flutter noisily. YaYa returned with a watermelon but found Liang Chao missing.
"Master, are you there?" YaYa called out as she cradled the watermelon and walked toward the inner room. Peeking inside, she saw only an empty single bed and no sign of Liang Chao.
YaYa placed the watermelon on the Tea Table next to the sofa and stepped in front of the Fan, letting its breeze lift her bangs and sway her dress.
Footsteps approached from the entrance, and without turning around, YaYa knew it was her master Liang Chao returning. Sure enough, he entered and glanced around to find no one else present. He quickly wrapped his arms around YaYa's hem that was caught by the wind while his other hand reached up to squeeze her backside.
YaYa's rear felt magnetic, drawing Liang Chao's hand in a way that made it difficult for him to let go. She closed her eyes, breathing softly as she allowed him to explore further. They were lost in their moment when a car glided gently down the road and two figures stepped out.
"Liang Chao..." came a loud shout, trembling with surprise. Liang Chao instinctively released his grip. Turning around, he saw Zhiqing had arrived, accompanied by a slightly shorter man.
Zhiqing had originally intended to have lunch with Ziya but was turned down. Concerned about her health and mood, he didn't hold a grudge against her refusal. However, he remained worried about her condition. After having lunch without any business to attend to, he drove over to check on Ziya. Coincidentally, they were heading toward the clinic when Zhiqing learned that Liang Chao was there; he brought along his apprentice who had been suffering from a cold that wouldn't go away. Unfortunately, he stumbled upon the earlier scene.
"Cough cough, Zhiqing," Liang Chao said awkwardly while forcing himself to remain calm as he extended his hand for a handshake.
Zhiqing scoffed lightly and waved his hand dismissively. "Forget it; let's pretend we didn't see anything. It's natural for men to have such desires, but you must also consider your family. As long as you can take care of both sides and ensure Sun Meng isn't wronged, then there's no issue." Zhiqing made it clear that he didn't want to interfere in their personal matters; as long as Liang Chao treated Sun Meng well in the future, today's incident could be overlooked.
YaYa listened intently to Zhiqing's words and felt her face flush with embarrassment. She quickly lowered her head and tried to leave the scene but found herself at the door just as Ziya's Sun Meng stepped out of the car. Their gazes locked together; YaYa desperately avoided those two intense stares and nodded at them before attempting to sidestep outside the clinic. Just coming out of an air-conditioned vehicle, they felt a burning heat on their arms. Ziya hurriedly sought shelter under the eaves of the clinic.
“Where are you going, YaYa?” Sun Meng stepped forward to block her path. Ziya observed from the side, noticing YaYa's flushed face and found it quite strange. If it were just the heat, there was no way her face would be reddened like that. It seemed there was something going on between her and Liang Chao, so she thought to herself: if she wasn't mistaken, Zhiqing must have seen something.
“Uh, Master’s Wife, I’m going to buy some watermelon. They’re selling sweet cantaloupes over there,” YaYa said, keeping her head down and avoiding eye contact with Ziya and Sun Meng.
“Alright, go ahead!” Sun Meng replied coldly as she walked into the clinic with Ziya.
Liang Chao and Zhi Qing each lit a cigarette, exchanging awkward laughs as they didn’t know what to say when Ziya and Sun Meng entered. Liang Chao’s expression suddenly darkened for a moment but quickly returned to a smile.
“Ziya, look at you running around in this heat. Sun Meng doesn’t have much sense either; why is she wandering around? There’s no air conditioning here—what if you get heatstroke?” He hurriedly turned the fan to its highest setting, and it began to blow a strong gust of warm air.
For a moment, everyone stood there in silence, not speaking to one another, only hearing the fan hum as it blew warm air around. After a while, Ziya glanced at Liang Chao and then at Zhiqing, trying to read something in Zhiqing's eyes, but the latter deliberately avoided her gaze.
“No one can be blamed for this. The thing is, I didn’t sleep well last night. Can you prescribe me something like a sedative?” Ziya reluctantly broke the silence, giving Liang Chao an easy way out while making up an excuse for needing medication. She understood that Sun Meng had deep feelings for Liang Chao; if her well-meaning help ended up causing a rift between them, it would be bad. Sun Meng wouldn’t just be ungrateful but might even resent her, losing a friend in the process.
“Sedatives are hard to prescribe; most major hospitals prohibit selling such medications. Why are you having trouble sleeping? Tell me about it, and I can prescribe some calming herbal supplements instead. How does that sound?” Liang Chao quickly fell into his professional role due to habit and began asking about her symptoms. His calm demeanor and composed handling of the situation genuinely impressed Zhiqing.
Ziya nodded and agreed to Liang Chao's suggestion for medication while glancing at Sun Meng. Sun Meng seemed to breathe a sigh of relief; in reality, she was worried about Ziya coming here to argue with Liang Chao. That would put her in a difficult position—she didn’t want to lose Liang Chao again but also feared for Ziya’s health if she got angry. Seeing that nothing had happened eased her mind considerably.
If Zhiqing didn’t understand Sun Meng well, then Ziya’s understanding of her was like looking into a mirror—she could see through her inner thoughts completely. With a silent sigh, Ziya decided to ask Liang Chao a question.
“Doctor Liang, when are you planning to hold your wedding?” Ziya undoubtedly voiced what everyone was thinking. As soon as she spoke, everyone turned their attention to Liang Chao, waiting for his response.
“No rush; we just bought a house and don’t have much savings at home. We should wait until I have enough money before discussing it!” Liang Chao's evasive answer left everyone present, including Sun Meng, feeling dissatisfied.
"That being said, don't make excuses. I consider Sun Meng as my sister, and besides, she is also my mother Anqing's goddaughter. We can't let her down on her wedding, right? You all figure out how much money you need for the wedding, and I'll cover it." Ziya declared, watching intently for any change in the other person's expression.
