Ziya watched as her phone slipped from her hand and fell to the ground. She never expected that the cold rejections she had given to others countless times would now be met with the same indifference from Severe Cold. Was this a karmic retribution, or had Severe Cold truly lost all feelings for her? Or was it just a deliberate act of sulking? She didn't want to delve into it. Silently, she approached her computer desk and turned on the computer. The message she had sent to Severe Cold earlier must have been seen, prompting the text she received.
Ziya blocked Severe Cold, feeling a heavy weight in her heart. She didn’t want to hurt herself further, so she flopped onto her bed, lazily pulled up the covers, and drifted off to sleep.
A sudden ring of the phone jolted Ziya awake from her slumber. Having lain in that position all night, she felt an unbearable soreness throughout her body as she sat up. Her eyes landed on the computer, and memories of last night flooded back, including her dreams.
Without thinking much, Ziya cast a cold glance at the computer and told herself to forget it! As if this person had never existed in her line of sight. Remembering last night’s dream, she took out her phone and dialed Sun Meng's number. The phone rang for quite a while without anyone picking up before it naturally disconnected. She tried calling again, sensing some movement on the other end.
Holding the phone to her ear, she listened to the hurried voices coming through. A smile tugged at Ziya's lips, revealing a shallow dimple as she thought: This girl must have been sleeping without clothes on. She could still hear another heavy voice in the background—definitely Liang Chao… Oh no! Ziya quickly hung up, realizing she might have interrupted something private.
Ziya knew that Sun Meng would definitely call her back soon, so she wasn’t in a hurry. After freshening up, she noticed her complexion looked pale due to lack of sleep. She picked up Anqing's makeup and lightly applied some foundation and blush for the first time. Looking in the mirror, she almost doubled over with laughter at her reflection.
The phone rang persistently from the living room sofa. Ziya hurried out, thinking it must be Sun Meng calling back. However, upon answering, she realized it was Zhiqing.
"How are you?" Zhiqing was always succinct and straight to the point.
"Not bad! How about you?" Ziya replied as she walked toward her mother's vanity to tidy up the mess she had made earlier. The faint sounds of cosmetics clinking came through the receiver.
"Are you rearranging things?" Zhiqing's ears were sharp; she even caught that small noise.
"Um, yeah, just a bit. Almost done. Is there something you need?"
"Nothing much; I just wanted to hear your voice."
"Uh, Class Leader, you're so thoughtful, thank you! Later, I'll come to your place with Sun Meng," Ziya said as she heard a phone ringing.
"Sure!"
"Um, Class Leader, I'm sorry, it might be Sun Meng calling. Just a moment..."
Zhiqing responded and quickly hung up the phone.
Ziya answered the call and heard Sun Meng's voice. "Hey, how's it going? Enjoying your little world together? I'm so envious!"
Ziya teased back, trying to mask the pain she felt inside.
"Well, if you're envious, then hurry up! What are you waiting for? A rare good man is right in front of you; it's up to you to make a move!" Sun Meng's sharp joke pierced Ziya's heart deeply, causing her to pause for a moment.
"Alright, enough of that. I'm taking a day off today. Let's go check on Zhiqing and help him gain some popularity," Ziya said, taking a deep breath to push aside her unpleasant feelings and forcing a light tone.
"Sounds good! I'm having breakfast right now. Want some?" Sun Meng knew that Ziya's parents were away on vacation and deliberately teased her.
"Actually, I haven't had breakfast yet. Save me some; I'll come over to your place!" As she spoke, Ziya hurriedly packed her things and quickly left her room. She stepped into the elevator, managing everything with one hand while tilting her neck to hold the phone against her ear and shoulder to continue listening to Sun Meng.
"Come on! I've saved some for you," Sun Meng said cheerfully.
Sun Meng's house was near Construction Road, and the entire residential area felt cramped and narrow compared to Ziya's bright neighborhood. Upon entering, Ziya immediately sensed the poor lighting. The dark stairwell was particularly unsettling; she was used to the motion-sensor lights at her own home. Here, she stomped her feet in frustration, but the overhead incandescent light remained unresponsive.
Knowing that Ziya had poor eyesight and would struggle in the dark stairwell, Sun Meng opened the door and stepped back to the second floor to meet her.
"You really found this place? No way!" Ziya looked around, the darkness enveloping them, even the window panes were small and dreary.
"I wouldn't dare compare with you; even a single hair from me is thicker than yours. Let's just make do! But the room is quite spacious, you'll see when you get up there," Sun Meng said, affectionately linking her arm with Ziya's. The staircase was narrow, only allowing one person to walk at a time; if two tried to go side by side, they would have to squeeze past anyone coming down.
The staircase was dimly lit, and their voices echoed clearly in the silence. On the third floor, Room 5, Sun Meng pushed open the door. What greeted Ziya was a vast space—not because it was large, but because the living room was completely empty of furniture. The floor was cluttered with paint cans and items that had just been moved in but not yet arranged.
"Did you move in yesterday?" Ziya asked casually as she continued to survey the room. She hadn't seen Liang Chao and assumed he must have gone to work.
"Yeah, he didn't open the clinic yesterday and was busy with all this. He actually planned to stay another day, but someone called saying there were patients waiting at the clinic, so he left half an hour before you arrived," Sun Meng replied, her face always adorned with a sweet smile. She radiated a contented aura that made Ziya genuinely envious; love could drive one mad or bring peace, and at that moment, Sun Meng truly embodied tranquility.
"This house seems a bit old. How did you manage to buy something like this?"
As Ziya stepped further inside, she felt an unusual atmosphere but couldn't pinpoint why. Seeing Sun Meng so happy made her reluctant to voice her concerns and add unnecessary worries.
"Uh, we saw it through an agent. I never expected it would actually work out; I just came to take a look without any intention of buying. The space is more generous than others and the price is cheap. So we didn't think too much about it and paid the deposit right away."
"You could try for an installment plan or something for a new property," Ziya suggested with a frown. She simply didn't like Sun Meng's current environment.
"Forget it; we're just low-tier folks making do! As long as we're together, that's what matters."
