Zhiqing deliberately put on a serious face and spoke in a teasing tone, "Um, did we walk into the wrong hospital room? This isn't the fierce Sun Meng from back in the day, is it? She’s changed so much after a few years."
Ziya and Severe Cold were momentarily taken aback, but soon realized the humor in it and burst into laughter. Only Liang Chao looked slightly embarrassed; after all, how could Sun Meng not be related to him? The lonely nights spent in solitude, with only shadows for company, brought back warm memories that gnawed at the emotional nerve he was reluctant to touch.
Ziya's phone rang with a pleasant tone. She glanced around at the others awkwardly before hurrying to the balcony to answer. It was her mother, Anqing, naturally asking when Ziya and Sun Meng would be coming home.
"Severe Cold, how did you end up meeting our class monitor? And Liang Chao, how did you get here to D City so quickly? Are you still hung up on someone? Come on! You know I’m Fang Ziya, acting as a reporter conducting a live interview with you." Ziya raised her phone as if it were a microphone, pretending to interview Severe Cold while smiling expectantly at him.
Severe Cold showed an unusual shyness, scratching his head and hesitating to speak. He feared that if he revealed too much, Ziya would look down on him.
"Could it be that there's more to your encounter than just a simple story?" Ziya's sharp gaze searched both their faces for answers.
"Uh... who should go first?" Zhiqing asked in frustration.
"I'll go!" Liang Chao volunteered. He then turned his gaze toward Sun Meng, who was lazily leaning against the bed. "To be honest, ever since I left Sun Meng, I've felt empty inside. Fighting and arguing with her was annoying, but once I was gone and there was suddenly no one around making noise, I was overwhelmed by loneliness. I had no choice but to look for her everywhere. The urgency to find Sun Meng was crazy; as soon as I found out you guys were in D City, I rushed over. But I was afraid she wouldn’t forgive me, so I called her from nearby and found out she was in the hospital. So that’s why I suddenly showed up."
"Clap clap! Good job! This is what they call distance makes the heart grow fonder. People are strange creatures; only when they lose something do they learn to cherish it, right?" Severe Cold and Zhiqing applauded. Ziya shot a glance at someone who seemed to have flushed red and turned away shyly, pressing her lips together without saying anything.
"Alright, enough about our class monitor," Ziya quickly changed the subject to spare Liang Chao any embarrassment. After all, he had quietly left Sun Meng; if she had been a bit more proud, he might not have been able to come back.
"Uh... don’t laugh at me just yet. To be honest, I... don’t have a job. I came here for something... and then today I stepped in dog poop and got hit on the head by a falling plastic bottle." Zhiqing seemed to have some unspoken issues; he broke his words into several segments, his face turning red as he finally managed to explain how he met Severe Cold.
"Pfft! It’s fine! What secret do you have that you're afraid of sharing? Who would laugh at you? If you don’t spill it, I’ll just go wash apples," Ziya said with a charming smile as she adjusted her grip on her phone.
"Wait! I'll tell you right now." Zhiqing cleared his throat with effort and waved at Ziya to stop her from washing apples. Then he tried hard to suppress his slightly awkward demeanor and said, "I came here to help someone with feng shui..."
"Ah..." Liang Chao exclaimed in surprise, while Sun Meng widened her eyes to look at him.
"Pfft." Severe Cold had just brought the cup to his lips when he suddenly heard this and sprayed the water in his mouth. He hurriedly grabbed a tissue to wipe the water from the corner of his mouth.
"You’re not pretending to be a fortune teller, are you?" Ziya asked, slowly placing the apple into the bag, her gaze fixed on him.
"I knew you would laugh at me, but I'm not doing anything deceitful. I was just asked by the homeowner to check the feng shui of the house and see if there’s anything wrong, to provide some comfort," Zhiqing said, as if he had suddenly released all the pent-up frustration inside him, speaking with ease.
"There’s nothing wrong with having various professions; everyone has their own aspirations and occupies a different field. Severe Cold, it’s your turn," everyone immediately turned their attention to Severe Cold. Ziya raised her phone in front of him, her piercing gaze seeming to see right through his arrogant masculinity.
Severe Cold's expression changed, his smile fading. With a darkened face, he swatted Ziya's hand away and said gruffly, "Yes, I smashed your class monitor today. What are you going to do about it? Are you going to seek revenge?"
Aside from Zhiqing, who understood what Severe Cold meant, everyone else was left in confusion. Zhiqing felt that beneath Severe Cold's bold exterior lay an arrogant masculine mindset. This was completely at odds with Ziya's personality; it seemed their relationship would encounter some turbulence in the future.
Ziya was momentarily taken aback by Severe Cold's words; her hand holding the phone trembled slightly before she silently withdrew it. She turned around to wash a few apples, and the lively atmosphere that had just been present dissipated due to Severe Cold's remark.
As Ziya turned to wash the apples, Severe Cold followed closely behind. Amidst a flurry of playful banter and repeated apologies, Ziya huffed in mock annoyance, and they reconciled.
The three people in the hospital room fell into a brief silence, each lost in thought. Only Sun Meng was slightly restless due to the heat, constantly shifting positions and causing the bed to shake slightly.
"Speaking of which, are those ghosts real or not?" Liang Chao asked with a skeptical expression as he shrugged his shoulders. He then turned to glance at Ziya and Severe Cold's backs, revealing a sly smile as he secretly pointed with his raised index finger and whispered, "Shh! Those two have something going on."
"Well, if you believe it exists, then it does; if you don't believe it, you can just chalk it up to bad luck," Zhiqing replied calmly, showing no signs of being affected by Severe Cold's earlier words. He took the apple that Ziya handed him and bit into it with a crisp crunch that prompted Sun Meng to turn over and reach out for another apple from Ziya.
"Don't give her any food, you greedy cat. By the way, I still need to ask the doctor if you can eat apples," Liang Chao said with a look of affection, gently pushing aside Sun Meng's outstretched hand in jest.
Laughter erupted among the group, filling the hospital room with warmth. Outside in the corridor, the sound of a moving stretcher's wheels squeaked as Ziya noticed that the door to the room was not properly closed, allowing noise to seep in. She stood up to close it, only to find someone pushing from the outside. She quickly stepped aside to let them in. It was a nurse and a doctor who had just finished a surgery; they hadn’t even had time to change out of their scrubs before bringing a patient into Sun Meng's room. The stretcher was covered with a thin white blanket, and a patient, still under anesthesia, lay pale and unconscious on it. Family members and medical staff worked together to transfer the patient to the bed next to Sun Meng's. The patient's relatives also entered the room, causing it to become crowded, prompting Severe Cold and others to retreat to the doorway.
Sun Meng lay in her bed, observing the oxygen-dependent patient and the solemn expressions of their family members. She couldn't help but speculate that this patient must be suffering from a serious illness.
Sure enough, after the doctor left, the patient's family could no longer hold back their tears, which spilled over as they began to cry openly.
"Is he your father?" Sun Meng tentatively asked an elderly man with graying hair. At that moment, Ziya and Severe Cold were still outside, thinking about how inappropriate it would be to disturb others in such a serious situation.
"Woo… yes… woo…" The family member sobbed, his voice choked with emotion. His eyes were already swollen from crying, and the bloodshot sclera made his expression heart-wrenching.
Sun Meng felt a pang of sorrow; she sat up slightly and pulled out a tissue from the bedside table to wipe away her own damp eyes. "It's going to be okay; since he’s already had surgery, he will get better soon."
"Woo… no… woo… cancer… Late Stage Liver Cancer… woo…"
Sun Meng was at a loss for words. Was there really no extra bed available in this hospital? They had placed a cancer patient in the same room as her. Just then, Ziya and the others walked in; upon seeing them enter, the weeping family member immediately stopped crying, his nose red as he hurried into the bathroom provided in the room.
"Ziya, this…" Sun Meng pointed at the unmoving elderly man still lying on the bed, her face contorted with concern as she struggled to find words.
