In the dark of night, the malevolent nature spirits quietly cast a strange shadow over everything. Ziya and her two companions had originally intended to peek out and see if there was anything unusual happening on Gravel Road, but they were startled to see ghostly figures projected onto the school wall from the hospital's lights.
The three of them recoiled in shock. "What is that?" Ziya's voice trembled, thinking she had seen a ghost.
"That's a person, not a ghost."
"Right, it's a person," Zhiqing agreed with Sun Meng.
"How can you be so sure they're people?"
"Because I saw them. Those are the four idiots from Class Two, and they're holding beer bottles!"
"Really? What are they doing here?" Ziya couldn't help but admire Sun Meng; her eyesight was exceptional, while Ziya's had deteriorated from too much reading.
"What else could they be doing? I think that bastard An Jian sold us out. They're probably waiting for us to walk right into their trap," Zhiqing said confidently.
As the night mist thickened, enveloping everything in a mysterious specter-like hue, Zhiqing and her companions dispersed. Ziya wore a slightly disappointed expression, while Sun Meng was quite pleased, looking forward to a good night's sleep.
Meanwhile, the four boys from Class Two stumbled out of the restaurant just as the heavy rain began to subside. They were swaying slightly, tipsy from their drinks.
"Damn it, tonight we're going to make sure that kid pays for everything. I've been holding this anger in for a year!" The tall one hiccupped as he flicked his cigarette butt, making it glow red.
"Are they really coming?" The short one gazed up at the pitch-black sky, which seemed covered by a heavy black curtain that obscured any clarity.
"Dammit, that kid An Jian wouldn't dare to trick us unless he wants to die."
The four of them cursed as they made their way from the restaurant to the dark, unlit Gravel Road that led to the school and hospital. Unbeknownst to them, Ziya and his companions had just emerged and were watching them closely. While Ziya and his group decided to call off their plans for the night, the four remained oblivious, thinking that Zhiqing had not yet arrived.
An hour had passed since the hospital's garbage was last taken out, and the back door had closed after 10 PM. The four of them hid near the hospital's back entrance. After a heavy rain, the stench from the trash cans had lessened somewhat. The hospital and school stood in stark contrast to each other, with Gravel Road forming a natural alleyway between them. At first glance, this alley seemed quite deep, extending into darkness where one could not see the end.
They waited there, legs numb but stubbornly refusing to leave. Each of them focused intently on the direction of the school's Side Door, so much so that they didn't even hear the faint sound of the trash can lid moving.
Suddenly, shadowy figures darted from the direction of the school. In the dark environment, they appeared to rise and fall as if leaping. Yet amidst this pitch-black night, green malevolent lights flickered from these shadows, reflecting a deep-seated greed and ferocity illuminated by the bright moonlight above.
Their arrival added an eerie quality to this specter-filled night as they sniffed hungrily at the air, catching whiffs of blood that came and went.
"What is that?" The short one turned around and saw tiny flickering lights in the darkness, resembling small moving light bulbs from a distance.
"What the hell is that?" The tall one stepped out from his hiding spot and approached to reach for one of those moving lights. Just as he was about to touch it, a fierce wind rushed at him; he felt a sharp pain in his fingers and screamed, "What the hell is that thing? It bit me!"
"What is it?" The other three quickly gathered around him. They dragged him toward the back door, using its light to see that part of his finger was missing, blood gushing out.
"Dammit! How did I not feel any pain?" The tall one looked in horror at his shortened finger and cursed in panic. Just after he finished cursing, a wave of excruciating pain hit him; beads of sweat like yellow peas popped out on his forehead as his face turned pale with fear. He furrowed his brow but forgot to scream.
"Quick! We need to get inside the hospital! Damn it, it's locked here; we have to go through the front entrance!" His partner cursed anxiously.
"Look!" Just when they were at a loss for what to do, another companion shouted in panic.
Hearing his partner's shout, the other three turned to look in the direction he pointed. A multitude of lanterns rushed toward them, and fear gripped the four as they huddled together. The tall man, whose finger had been bitten off, was still bleeding profusely. He lifted his shirt to wrap the severed finger, feeling the pain shoot through him—ten fingers connected to the heart, it truly hurt. As those terrifying things closed in, he felt both fear and dread; blood dripped onto the ground, and the metallic scent only seemed to entice them to attack faster.
"Damn it, what the hell is this?" he exclaimed. "Not a sound at all; it's terrifying!" Before he could finish speaking, those small black creatures had surrounded them completely. The flickering green lanterns emitted a strange light that was yellowish-green, shining directly into their eyes and rendering their bodies rigid; they couldn't move at all. At that moment, a low growl echoed in their ears, a rumbling sound slowly approaching them as if those small creatures were about to pounce.
"My hand hurts like hell," the tall man groaned, his voice trembling with fear and pain. Sweat dripped down his face, and the fabric wrapping his finger was soaked with blood.
"What do we do now?" stammered one of the more timid members, his legs shaking uncontrollably.
"Damn it, let's run!" shouted another as he kicked out at the increasingly close creatures.
"Is this a ghost?" he wondered helplessly as they pressed against the back door of the hospital. Each of them felt varying degrees of fear, yet they shared an unspoken agreement to break free from this bizarre circle.
"Run!" someone yelled suddenly, their voice cracking with panic. Without hesitation, they bolted forward. But before they could take more than a couple of steps, a strange cry erupted from the creatures' mouths. The sound of "Wooah! Wooah!" grated against their eardrums, making their hearts race as if they might burst from their chests. The cries grew louder, transforming from one voice into a chorus of wails accompanied by howls that pierced through their very bones and drilled deep into their brains. In an instant, the air was filled with cries and screams echoing at the back door of the hospital.
